Duplicates in the mission list [solved]

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone knows what I've done wrong here

When I first installed TDM I manually copied the PK4 mission files into my fm directory, this worked fine and all the missions appeared in the list.

Since then I've used the TDM mission download/update feature which also works fine.

However I've noticed a few missions seem to have two entries in the mission list, I've looked through various files and found missions.tdminfo in the fm folder but while this does list the missions it doesn't seem to have any duplicates.

Any suggestions ?

Caduceus of St Alban & The Glenham Tower

Definitely only one folder for each of these

Hmm didn't know I could delete the missions.tdminfo file, won't that delete the completed mission stats ?

I'll give it a go anyway & get back to you, thanks for the suggestion

-- EDIT --

deleting missions.tdminfo removed the completed mission stats but I still have the same duplicates

I had that problem and successfully edited out the dupes from that file, carefully maintaining mission stats. Hopefully you didn't delete it entirelly, but hung on to a copy in another folder, or just renamed it for testing.

Another thing you could check is the darkmod.txt files. Since they're .txt you should be able to search inside them using windows explorer if on Windows. See if there's more than one darkmod.txt pointing to those missions. Maybe one's got into another FM folder somehow, either at your end or on a mirror.

Ahhh glenham.pk4 & glenham_tower.pk4 look to be identical so that would account for one of them

I'll have a dig around for a caduceus duplicate, back in a mo

--- EDIT ---

Found it, caduceus\caduceus.pk4 & stalban\stalban.pk4 are also identical

Panic over sorry about that, is it safe to just delete the folders & contents ?

Will that reset the mission list or do I need to delete the missions.tdminfo file too ?

  • grand
  • Yes assuming you have finished playing them andf dont need the savegame.
  • I beleive TDM should update missions.tdminfo when .PK4's are remove from the fms folder.

Make sure to to stick to the version of the file that is named like the 'internalName', as listed here:

http://missions.thedarkmod.com/get_available_missions.php

Otherwise any future update on one of those missions will pop up again beside the outdated one instead of replacing it.

The reason for those missions popping up beside each other, is because TDM uses different approaches to determine the name of the folder depending on how these missions were added to the fms folder.

When dropping in a plain .pk4, it will simply create a folder with the same name (excluding the .pk4 exttension).

Whereas when using the internal downloader, it takes the internal name which is different for those missions.

Thanks for that gnartsch.

So basically the problem was how I seeded the fm folder with missions I'd downloaded manually giving different folder names to missions the internal downloader uses

I'm probably only going to use the internal downloader from now on but just in case, if I make a sub folder of my fm folder with a name matching the "internalName" field in http://missions.thedarkmod.com/get_available_missions.php and put the PK4 in there, will TDM still pick that up ?

Hmmm... probably not. At least not correctly.

On top of naming the folder matching the internal name, it also renames the pk4 during download.

So, you have to rename the pk4 to internalName.pk4 as well.

Edit: uh... better forget the manual editing altogether!

There are yet another few flags in tdm_missions.info, which tell the downloader whether the file was downloaded via the internal downloader and which version it was.

If you drop something manually, then the downloader will ignore it altogether - and won't offer any updates either.

So, best would be to just dump all manual files and allow the downloader to do it's job.

However, you can move in your savegames into the 'official' folder afterwards if you want, I guess.

OK well what I've done so far is this.

I've added a "downloaded_version" flag to each entry in missions.tdminfo as this seems to be the only one added when missions get downloaded

I checked through http://missions.thedarkmod.com/get_available_missions.php and made sure the versions matched

I also made sure the folder and PK4 names matched the "internalName" from there and when they didn't, I deleted the missions.tdminfo entry and the entire mission folder from disk and downloaded again

So I'm reasonably happy my mission set matches the download list now

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
