Does anyone else here play DarkMod with a GTX 980?

I am experiencing a very strange issue with some of the fan missions. I will come across certain spots, usually with rain, where my fps drop from 60 down to the 30s and 40s. I have 8 GB of RAM and a INTEL I7-4770K 3.5 GHZ processor. I have tried both the 344.65 and 344.75 drivers and that doesn't make a difference. I use FXAA but I even tried these fan missions with no AA and no vynsc and the same thing happens. This is not what I expected from a GTX 980 but I have no issues like this in any of my other games. Most DarkMod fan missions play just fine (60fps) vsync, but some others where it is raining, I get a fps drop in those areas. Am I really the only one that this is happening to?

I have a 780ti which is just as fast. I also have a 4770k and I can tell you from experience, once you go past a certain point with video cards (GTX660ish) you're not going to get any better FPS unless you use really high AA (like 32x+)

The greatest gains at that point will be single threaded processor performance.

Overclock that 4770k as high as it will go man. I have mine at 4.4Ghz on all 4 cores and HT "cores".

Rain is a performance killer for most systems.

Can you get a screenshot of the spot and map though?

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

I tried with threaded optimization off and I got even worse fps. Try this, play the FM Noble House (the accountant). Follow the guy through the underground sewer and then climb the ladder to the street level. I get 60 fps until I get to that street in the rain then it drops to the 30s fps. Only in the street corners of that map does it return to 60 fps. The same thing happens in another FM called Siege Shop. Play that one and go through the tunnel until you reach an open field in the rain. I'm at 60 fps until I reach that field and then it drops down into the 30s again.

I even tried these two FMs on a completely different pc with an Nvidia GTX 660 with different drivers and this STILL happens. Why does this only happen to me?

Cavador should'nt be having any problems with the system he has, so it has to be a configuration issue. With a virgin & vanilla stock windows setup, a default nvidia driver and darkmod install & setup his system should maxing out on EVERY FM, period!

@Cavador, I have previously asked for your full and detail system specs (in easy-to-read layout) and I have offered to remote onto you PC so I can fix the issue for you.

Drop me a PM with your Skype details.

  • Those were pretty easy to read. I don't have Skype.
  • I've never used Skype before. It seems like the DarkMod is not optimized properly for newer video cards.
  • Im offering to to help here, and the quickest way to do that is for me to remote onto your PC and diagnose the problem.
  • No... I currently have a GTX 970 & Core i7-3770, and my previous cards were R9-290, GTX 670, HD 5870, GTX 480.

That's a little accusatory my friend.

Look at it this way, Doom 3 has been out since 2004 and Nvidia has since then to improve how it's OpenGL driver handles

it's renderer. One thing they could have done would be to do a better job of preventing overdraw. Most other game developers

since then have given-up on Nvidia and ATI helping with overdraw and have moved to Deferred Rendering in their engines

which is less than ideal since it has more overhead than doing it in the driver.

Also, yes the Rain particles are highly CPU dependent so that could be part of the problem. We may have some solutions to

that in the future but please keep in mind that the TDM team is not a AAA publisher with infinite developer resources. Solutions

will happen when more contributors arrive. If you have a problem with our level of optimization, call your coder friends and ask

them to visit the forums.

This might be the appropriate conclusion if lots of other people with newer cards were reporting the same thing. I'm not aware of such complaints. Another possible conclusion is that something specific to your situation is causing the problem. Without more information it is difficult to decide which is more likely.

Fair enough. I'm not necessarily easily offended but I've seen the "game is not optimized" slogan used against big developers on various gaming forums

to indict them of being "lazy" so I was making sure that wouldn't be leveled against us publicly. Eg; "The Dark Mod team is lazy". We have had enough

folks come out of the woodwork and tell other people that TDM isn't worthwhile, particularly some "uber-fans" of TDS who feel our project is an affront to their game. :)

(Thus far T4 fans haven't sprung up to give us grief).

Yeah, your specifications are pretty so you should have pretty good performance from my perspective. Sounds like a driver bug of some sort.

Now some of the maps are slow in certain spots.

The same thing happens in another FM called Siege Shop. Play that one and go through the tunnel until you reach an open field in the rain. I'm at 60 fps until I reach that field and then it drops down into the 30s again.

This is a perfect example. I betatested this mission and he used to have lots of torch carrying guards and grass and rain, and it ran like 15 FPS at that part on my old computer.

The problem with the Doom 3 engine is that it's only using 1 core of your CPU for almost everything.

Overclocking your CPU will make a big difference in your experience with TDM.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Lazy? No way! I think what the developers of TDM have accomplished with this mod is absolutely AMAZING! Being a Thief 2 player for over 12 years I can tell you that I GREATLY appreciate what has been done with TDM. The new Thief 4 is AWFUL. The DarkMod is Thief 4 to me. It's everything Thief 4 should have been. I greatly appreciate what has been done with this mod. I just can't figure out this rain thing on a GTX 980. Edited by cavador_8

Yes! This is exactly what I am talking about. So it does happen to other people besides me. I've never overclocked before. I guess I might have to.

Right

Spent the last 3 hours looking at this on Cav's PC -

  • checked The Darkmod folder, setting and config - set them all to the same as my setup.
  • Check the driver, uninstalled, ran driver cleaner and reinstalled.
  • In the nvidia control panel I set the powermanagment to max - althought nvidia fixed this issue with TDM and some other game 2 driver versions ago.
  • installed the latest chipset and Intel RST driver for his intel Z87 motherboard.
  • ran msconfig and disable a bunch of sergvices and app from starting and running in the background.

End result, I have improved his overall FPS by 10, so Cav and myself are seeing the same FPS figure of 39-40fps when we standing in the middle of the street looking up toward the nobel house near the sewer exit. On the two mission's he had an issue with. AC1 and SiegeShop both have rain and both are choking when we walkin into a scene with it.

The only other weird thing Cav's PC is doing is when TDM is on the main main the FPS goes as high as 1000fps and with active sync on it fluctuates between 40-78fps - I have no idea why the hell its doing that, Cav thinks its something to do with using a HDTV as a monitor (but I cant see how that would evect the fps)

The Darkmod should not be choking on such high end cards, and I am fairly sure I dont remember such a massive drop when I worked on AC1 with Goldwell. So I think its a driver issue, so what I am going to do is download the nvidia driver that was around when I was working on AC1 and pop my old GTX 480 back in.

In the meantime I am gonna work with Pranqster and Goldwell to reduce the impact of the rain patches in this missions, and could I could get some FPS numbers from other players -

  • Load up The Accountant 1 and make your way to the sewer exit.
  • then standing in the middle of the street looking up towards to the nobel house please make a note of your FPS figure.
  • Then give me your system specs and Darkmod settings.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
