Recommendation required: a multi-photo viewer with painting capabilities

Evening

What Im after is a combindation of the following -

  • have a similar interface to Microsoft Office Picture manager. where I can select multiple images and change the gamma and/or convert to another format.
  • And will allow me to draw and place text on the image, as per Microsoft Paint.

This is all to make beta testing that much easier, where I can take a screenshot then draw and annotate it afterwards. Having a single app that will do the job of the above two would say so much timer and effort. Fastone image viewer is the closest to what Im after but program has FAR too many annoying confirmation popups.

I don't know MS Office Picture Manager, but I think IrfanView should be a single and free program that is capable of what you want to do.

In IrfanView you can press [F12] to open the paint dialog where you can draw on and annotate pictures.

Go to Image > Color corrections to change brightness, contrast, gamma and saturation with sliders.

Press [T] to start the thumbnail view of your current directory. Select multiple images and batch convert them to the format you need.

It has a different interface but maybe it's worth a look?

I use irfanview for scanning through my screenshots folder and choosing which shots to use but I didn't realise it could do all that,. so I've fallen back on GIMP to do the prep. You can even do batch gamma adjustment and resizing under the "Advanced" bit of the batch menu. Thanks for the tip!

I had a look -

  • Not the look I was after but its useable, would be nice to have a folder view in the same window as I am editing.
  • You can ONLY undu the last change, unlike other apps including MSpaint that have multiple undo levels.
  • The scroll button can't customised or disabled, I like to be able to zoom in and out of the image with the scroll button.
  • It would be nice to be able to embed the paint tool bar into the main window. Having to press F12 everytime is slightly irksom.
  • And pressing T to get the thumnail window up, again, would be nice to have the option to embedd in the main window.

The pressing of F12/T would less irksome, if the program was able to remeber its last used layout.

I use Irfanview, I'll double check these.

Irfanview Thumbnails - Options - Save current window/layout position?

Try: Irfanview - Options - Properties/Settings - Viewing - Use right mouse button for context menu (default: scrolling)

Try having the thumbnail window open, selecting a thumbnail, and pressing Ctrl + N to open the image in a new Irfanview instance.

+/- are the zoom hotkeys. Couldn't find any way to change the scrollwheel behavior.

Picasa allows you to do that as well, text + brightness adjust and other image stuff. You're probably opposed to "google" apps but it works great for adjust screenshots and notating them. You can't really draw arrows per se but you can type a text block or just keep a "standard" one available to ctrl-V in to the text box like

----------->

Then you can rotate it, move it around, resize it, change the color, etc.

It also has a nice directory tree to the left with all your separate FM folders, whatever to organize your screenshots. You can also just select them from there and upload them for viewing/posting on the forum.

Its handy but it may not be your bag.

  • When you go File->Open, set the view to Large Thumbnails. Select as many as you want and open them into the app....
  • If you want to look at multiple imgaes in Photoshop set them to Tiled, Match Zoom:

PS isnt really designed for this and can only manage a certain amount of images before its starts getting slow. That and its a bit combersom, InfranView while not perfect is the closest thus far.

tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
