Stealth FMs

I hadn't seen this yet, but apparently we almost tied the number of T2 missions made last year? I find that somewhat unexpected.

Huh so either Thief 2 is on the fall or TDM is on the rise. Regardless 17 for a year is great! So congrats TDM :)

We've had a small boost since going standalone. Hopefully we can ramp up further as we continue to optimize and beautify.

It seems that some T2 editors are eyeing TDM after seeing how poorly Soul Tear's latest NewDark mission runs on modern

hardware. The myth that T2 performs a bazillion times better is being challenged now that the polygon limits are removed.

Still nice that Dark Engine auto portalizes \ optimizes for mappers though.

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

Well on the auto portalizing and optimizing, I mean it saves time no doubt, but it can also encourage lazy building habits. Thinking of portals explicitly makes the mapper really have to plan out the design. Also there's the problem of blocky room brushes that dromed deals with, whereas our location system is a lot more flexibile.

It doesn't take that long to slap a portal on a door anyway. Optimizing the brushes, ok that'd be a nice feature if it really makes some difference.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

15 years is a long time. It is great feat that both communities still exists!

While looking at the statistics is interesting, it is important to remember that it is not only about quantity but also quality. If we wanted to beat T in quantity, we could easily make many 6h speedbuilds... But that would be silly!

The overall quality level of TDM missions have been really high. I haven't played any of the T missions.

At any rate, it is an indication that our generation has been deeply moved by the first real sneak 'em ups. It may be that the later generations are less impressed and are not picking up the modding tradition.

And why would they? They have a limitless amount of games poured into the market, and easy game making tools to make their own games. Perhaps we are the modding generation, growing old?

Getting old is okay, if you consider the alternative. ;)

Congrats!

The real vitality of a community doesn't lie in a few elaborate missions. There will always be a few fanatics making them (myself included). Rather, it is a broad number of players and creators that does the trick. In that sense, I am happy there is an uptick in TDM editing, and that Thief 1 is still with us, but sad that this was also the year with the fewest total releases.

Many of the missions in Thief 2's heyday were pretty blah, but they spoke of a strong and resilient community that could also accomplish thing like T2X. We are far from that point.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
