I made a space spider md5mesh and md5 anims

Hello home-skillet sandwiches,

I made a space spider for my wonderful game-in-progress Icarus: Starship Command Simulator:

This is the first of three critters I will be doing. The other two are a zombie and a space worm. I am going to use them aboard derelict ships in my game.

They both use the same skeleton/armature but have slightly different meshes - one has rounder attributes and a larger abdomen. I also created two smaller versions - which required scaling the meshes/armature and all the animations down.

I noticed that in the vanilla source code they have max legs of 8 in ik.cpp (search for MAX_LEGS) - everything seemed to work fine for the 8 legs of my spider :) - any more than this and this constant might need to be adjusted. It can walk over obstacles and the legs rise and fall appropriately.

For the death animation I always thought it was creepiest when spiders crumple up. So instead of having a complicated .af file - I basically made the AF just a cylinder with only the two front arms having physics bodies attached to the joints. If all the arms go limp when the spider is killed it doesn't look as creepy in my opinion. I noticed that idSoftware did the AF's for monster_demon_trite and monster_demon_tick the same way.

Let me know what you think.

Looks nice. The mesh is good, but the texturing could be a bit better imho. What is lacking are hairs on the legs and body. This would make it look even more disgusting.

If you want some inspiration for your spiders, Path of Exile has some great spiders. They're hairy and colourful and gross, when they die their legs curl up and the front pair twitch every now and then, well worth taking a look at.

Path of Exile is awesome.

If you make the hairs smalle and use a bit more of them it should look even better, but it goes in the right direction.

Spiders curl up when they die because they only have muscles that contract the legs inwards, not outwards. That's done by the circulatory system.
So, when they die, the muscles contract when they dry, making the legs "crumple up".

Also, got some good chuckles from Airship Ballet's reaction. :D What did you expect?

Sydney Funnelweb?

No it's a Chilean Rose. I had one of those as a pet as a teenager. She used to sit sedately on my shoulder most of the evening except when I walked around when she'd crawl up into my hair, probably for stability. She did once scare a milkman who was collecting money in the evening and assumed she was fake until she moved.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
