Audio glitching/popping 2.02/2.03:

My current setup:

  • Core i7 3770 @stock
  • Msi Z77-g45 & latest intel chipset driver
  • Crucial DDR3-1600 8x2gb
  • Gigabyte gtx970 @stock & latest driver
  • SoundBlasterZ pic-e w/SBZ_CD_L13_1_00_28(12/12/14) driver.
  • Windows 7 Sp1
  • Eax is off in-game and alchemy(dsound.dll and .ini) is removed

When playing/mapping I'm a occasionally/self-regularly getting audio glitching/popping when moving around a map, from one leaf/zone to another and its worse when I noclip through sealing brushwork - where I can make it happen on demand.

Before I file a bug tracker, can I confirm is anyone else having this issue..? also I am fairly sure I only started getting this with 2.02 and its worse with 2.03.

[update]

I swapped out the pci-e SBz for my old pci-XFi and the issue including some distorsion on loud sounds is now gone. On the face of it it looks like the fisher-price SBz card was the cause of all the sound related issue in TDM. I think my next sound card (if at all) is not going to be a creative based card.

I've heard random popping for a couple years now. I haven't noticed it any worse lately.

I've heard it lately when crossing one portal in WS3, nowhere else. Since that portal has existed for 4+ years, I'd have to say the popping is a recent development.

That spot isn't a transition between locations, though, and it doesn't happen all the time.

My 4yo sound card has begun glitching lately, though, even when just listening to music, so I was attributing everything to that.

  • Good, as I have had this happen when crossing VP's also.

That would tally with my experience also, I can make it happen on demand in certain locations, in others its almost random. For exmple, just standing in one spot.

Considering that the whole sound infrastructure is going to change in v2.04 and that any fix would require

a code change, it's pretty much a moot point now isn't it?

I'd say that we'd want to await the v2.04 audio merge and then test.

Oh certainly this could be some portal area transition timing bug type thing but it's probably better to address it

once than twice (before and after the merge).

I've had this problem in my WIP and as far as I can tell it was occasionally caused by transitions between leafs (especially if a sound loss spawnarg with a high value was placed on a visportal). I also ran into it when the same sound (door opening or AI moving) were passing through two different visportals to arrive at the the player. By shutting down sound through one portal path I could mostly (but not totally) stop this sound clipping.

Who is working on that?

Not sure, there's tons of architectural changes... If it's broke before the merge and it is fixed, the fix might be different after the merge therefore

2x the work. Better to test after the merge and fix once.

In linux I used to have audio latency and occasional popping, but that has been solved for a couple years at least.

I have not noticed such audio popping on my current or previous sound cards. The current is Creative hi-def audio onboard an MSI Z97 Gaming3 mobo, with optional audio-power connector enabled (provides stable audio when many USB audio devices are attached and USB power is used). Previous audio on older system was HTC Omega Claro-Halo-XT, PCI card.

Does this popping occur in Windows only, or have any linux users noticed it as well?

System: Mageia Linux Cauldron, aka Mageia 8

  • 2 weeks later...

So it maybe mod related after all.

Or related to just certain drivers in which case I'll be a pain to track down. I don't seem to get sound popping using a bog-standard realtek driver from 2011.

Has anyone found a consistent example that we might be able to reproduce? Otherwise, it's an invisible needle in a 600000-line haystack.

You can play the beta of "Sir Talbot's collateral". It is in a very playable state already. The audio popping happens there frequently.

Edit: I don't know if it happens in other maps. And I'm running linux.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
