Dishonored 2

I would recommend those interested to watch the whole Dishonored 2 event, the game looks incredible. In the scenes where they're flying through the city it's so atmospheric and well detailed, definitely looking forward to this one!

Guys, I wouldn't be so sure. The development of Dishonored 2 has been started right after the Dishonored 1 release, at the end of 2012. Sure, Arkane has released three DLCs for the first game in 2013, but those ones were under development by a small enough team (about a half of the studio, mostly level designers and artists - see the Knife of Dunwall's and Brigmore Witches' credits), whereas the other team (mostly programmers) was working on the adaptation the id Tech engine for the second game. Now think about it: was id Tech Six ready to work outside of id Software at the end of 2012? I don't think so, because at that moment id Software has released its RAGE based on id Tech Five just a year before.

Id Tech 6 is mostly just Id Tech 5 with PBR and real-time lighting courtesy of the ex-Crytech coder that Bethesda grabbed.

I'm practically positive this will be a variant of the same code-line used in DOOM 2016. Perhaps it'll get a few more optimizations

before release.

The original Id Tech 6 plan was gonna be "megatexture for geometry" but that direction was tabled for later or permanently abandoned.

So Id Tech X versions now become like Quake 3 engine variants in COD. Minor evolution rather than radical new designs.

I think, if the Void Engine is really based on the id Tech Six, then Arkane's higher-ups would definitely have mentioned "PBR". Perhaps I've missed something, but I never saw "PBR" in Harvey Smith's Twitter. Did you?

Perhaps Arkane has made its own cool improvements to the Void Engine, but I doubt that these are revolutionary ones. It's incredibly hard to deeply modify the modern engine that has been created by someone else - actually, to do it you need a graphics genius like John Carmack/Tiago Sousa/Tim Sweeney as a lead for a whole tech team, and a few years. I totally respect Arkane, but doubt that it has so much human resources. That's why I still think that the Void Engine is the slightly modified id Tech Five.

I've asked Raphael Colantonio via Twitter: why Arkane have chosen to use id Tech Five for DH2? He said, "proprietary tech." I think this means that the Void Engine is based on the id Tech Five, not Six. I'm sorry if I upset someone who thought that it would be Six.

Does this mean that DH2 will work on Windows PC via OpenGL? Likely, but I'm not sure for 100%. Also, there is a hope that DH2 will support some day either Vulkan (in case Arkane didn't cancel the OpenGL-renderer) or DX12 (in case Arkane has ported the OpenGL-renderer into DX11).

Yeah, this should be OpenGL based as I recall. I will be surprised if Zenimax doesn't have the Doom 4 team port their Vulkan work to it.

It will probably be mostly the same engine by the time it ships.

Frankly, I doubt. I would imagine id's logic: "You guys had balls to take and re-work our engine, which means that you surely have balls to port it to Vulkan or whatever you want."

It will probably be mostly the same engine by the time it ships.

Like I said, these are different versions, Five and Six.

Wasn't her storyline mostly handled in the DLC playing as Daud though and not the main game with Corvo?

It was. But still, the story should not be changed, even if it was not part of the main game. As a developer I would assume, that most (or at least a lot of) players have played the DLC and will consequently know the story. And especially these players who bought (and liked) the DLC are more likely to buy the sequel and thus I would avoid pissing these off in particular.

I think this is purely a consequence of the level design, but the Low Chaos looks way more Thief than anything in Dishonored 1 did. I've always played Dishonored 1 as an action game mainly because stealth isn't that fleshed out, so this is getting me more excited than it should be.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
