Taff's Tunes

A basic county song that I've been playing around with for a while. I visited my Mate Dan in Bury St. Edmunds who built a recording studio in his backyard. We recorded the chords and then I did guitar lead over it. It was all done in one take. Maybe it could have been done better but it was done at 2am where we were both very pissed so it sounded good at the time and was left at that.

For a pissed britishman at 2am it's quite damn good! A nice relaxing sunday tune :)

Thanks! I believe I was inspired to write the chords after listening to the great Johnny Cash. The lead work was improvised in one go but it's just basic stuff in the A Minor Pentatonic scale. It's very easy to do even when pissed.

Here's an old one from when I used to be in a heavy metal band called Deviation years ago. Unfortunately because of all the distortion we used I don't think a lot of the recordings sound very good now. Here's one with no distortion that me and Joe (the singer) wrote and recorded in one go. I like doing things in one take. Sometimes there's a few mistakes but I think you can keep re-recording things to the point that while it's flawless it can also be flat and soulless. Plus the passion to record something new for the first time will always be unparalleled.

Really nice! I have great respect to those who are able to generate music.

I have zero skill in that, so for me it is always a mystery how stuff like that can be done.

I'm exactly the same with art. I can't paint or draw to save my life. That's probably while I enjoy making stuff in DR. I'm OK with hand to eye co-ordination when it comes to music but with painting and drawing it just doesn't seem to work. With DR though it's just implementing ones vision by clicking on points of a grid. One's hand to eye co-ordination doesn't seem to be a huge issue as long as you understand the basics of the level editor you are working with and are able to use it to create your artistic vision.

I really like that one too, nice work. Live performances and studio recordings have diverged into completely separate art forms by now. I don't know much about modern music but I expect it's the same situation as classical piano recordings which I do follow. Studio recordings are pieced together from dozens of takes, which get split into individual bars a couple of seconds long, and the result is pieced together from the best version of each bar. That's been going on since the invention of magnetic tape in the 1940s. I've seen early videos of Glenn Gould constructing a studio "performance" using a razor blade and sticky tape. I agree that the live versions are always more feeling and more exciting, even though they always contain a few mistakes.

I agree when it comes to organic instruments such as the guitar. As a fan of 80s synth pop and industrial dance music I really don't mind if the parts are copy and pasted. Specifically dance music which doesn't follow the conventional verse/chorus/verse/chorus/middle/chorus pattern that is typical of popular songs and dance music is very repetitive, multi layered and uses samples. Also a lot of the music is not played organically and created using software so replaying parts is going to sound the same anyway.

Sound nice.

Is it possible to play this tune with something that sound like lute or Hurdy-gurdy?

The songs are made up of typical chords and scales. They should in theory translate to any instrument. Me personally I cannot play them on another instrument. I believe a lute and hurdy-gurdy have smaller necks also less strings so my knowledge of chord and scale shapes on the guitar will be completely different and obsolete. You would think that experience in playing one stringed instrument would aid in the playing of another. Unfortunately that's not the case. I really want to learn how to play violin next but again, guitar technique, chord and scale shapes from guitar are completely obsolete when learning violin.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
