Thief (2014) Anyone played it?

Recommended Posts

I only started playing the Thief games in the last few years and some how I managed to miss this new remake of Thief, the game looks good and is very configurable which should make for many different play through scenarios and replay value, after watching a few review videos it seems the game was generally well received but I wondered if anyone here has played it and their thoughts on the game?

Yes, There are a couple of 20-page threads on here if you want to seek them out. The consensus was, it's very pretty but it's not similar to the Thief series. I got half way through it before losing interest, and it made so little impression that I can't now remember anything about it, or why I put it down. I do remember being annoyed by pointless quick time events.

you can't jump when you want to, it runs on rails, you can only use the rope arrow where there are ropey beams, it runs on rails, its set in a future time, several hundred years after the original garrett lost it all in a loony bin, it tells you where to go and what tools to use next. the architecture is rather dodgey eg rooms with no way into them except via the window, as in no fake door inside rooms for atmosphere. there's a weird context quick time event and animation running when moving between area's consiting of moving a wooden beam out of the way, or light shining from gaps at the bottom of closed windows with another quick time event to open window to go to another part. guards knocked out in one part of the map get respawned in when you go through a quick time event to a room only a few feet away.

then there's that flaming bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the first level was fantastic and then it took a steep dive afterwards. The developers kept touting along the development cycle about how they studied the "Thief series DNA" and wanted to respect the franchise however it was quite apparent playing the game that it is not the case, they included things such as unnecessary swearing ingame, the inability to jump when you want to, having a very buggy game (especially the sound had bugs) which is not good for a series which infamously focused so much on sound, a very bad story and pretty much wiped out all old references to the old games bar a few forced references.

There are some people who make it seem like this game snuck into their room and took their innocence but fan boyism aside the general consensus was that it was not recieved well by the public (most saw it as a Dishonored rip off). Also Eidos Montreal fired pretty much all the developers behind it after it was released so it must not have had the best sales either.

Thief 2014 big problems:

*the loot without any sense :D

*the (very good!) levels made years before and "filled" later with loot and quests: byproduct of a (good!) production stopped and restarted

*the story narrative.....it's horrible (like the not-so-well-done references to the City past -> keepers/hammerites/pagans/original Garrett)

*Thief-Taker General: most stupid and awful villain EVER.

It's just so blah.

I haven't finished it and I HATED Thief 3 when it came out. It took me years to finish it and then I loved it, even though the engine was dodgy as fuck, it was still a thief game.

This though?

It's NOT a thief game.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Why does Thief 3 always get so much hate? I've never understood that. It has a good story, the city is fun to explore, Stephen Russell voices Garrett and does an excellent job, they changed the mix of things up such as replacing rope arrows with wall gloves.

The graphics are very nice and to date it still has one of the best shadow systems in a video game.

Why does Thief 3 always get so much hate?

Because it was a massive step backwards in many places. Loading zones, clunky 3rd person movement, removal of swimmable water and rope arrows, removal of briefing videos, cheap slapstick humor...the list goes on.

Of course, it's head and shoulders above Thief 4.

And a very "fantasy-like" feeling/atmosphere (ratmen! Kurshok! JAR JAR BINKS :D ) compared to "pure-London-steampunk" feeling of Thief 1 and 2.

In this aspect (and ONLY in this one) T4 is good.

But hey, we got Dishonored meanwhile :P .....

It's very much a modern AAA game, very railroady and handholdy.

I got half way through it before losing interest, and it made so little impression that I can't now remember anything about it, or why I put it down.

then there's that flaming bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played it through twice - once on easy and once on hardest and I won't be playing it again

 OK, I think I'm getting the general impression of 'Thief', as much as I like a good looking game, (I've been playing/modding skyrim for two years and bought a GTX780 so I could use an ENB mod which can make the game look stunning and actually play the game at an acceptable framerate) but it's got to have the gameplay as well and I hate being led through a game on a set path.

I guess the review videos I watched were the few that didn't really hate it, I have many games to play so I think I'll be giving Thief a miss, thanks for the input :D

If you have it already, by all means give it a go, or if you feel that your collection isn't complete without it pick it up for 5$ when it's on sale.

It's pretty, atmospheric, but....empty at the same time, no soul. Like a beautiful model with no personality.

And the staples of the Thief universe that were already mentioned that were removed.

The backlash that this game got when previews were shown, was very reminiscent of Thief 3 when swimmable water and rope arrows were found out to be gone.

So the question is why did they do it again and expect anything different? No idea but that's what happened.

Again technical limitations were probably the reason for not allowing mantling anywhere and rope arrows everywhere. But why continue with an engine that can't do a thief experience? More than likely money was the reason.

They were already millions into development and were not going to start over with a new engine. And like many others have already said, even though it was in development for what 5 years? It still felt rushed.

There are moments of awesome for sure, but there's the Grand Canyon standing between these moments.

The basic issue is that the publishers looked at a niche title that sold N units, and asked "Yeah, but how can it sell N*10?" The end result is a game that won't satisfy the original fans (because it is not a good niche game), and it won't capture new fans (because it is not a very good mainstream game either). Also, you can't jump. Seriously. You can't jump except for the places where the designers intended for Garrett to jump. That's the kind of game it is.

Have you played Dishonored, though? Dishonored is a thiefy game done right, and even the DLC are very good (maybe even better than the original campaign).

TG's mage towers, lava-filled Lost City and Maw of Chaos were pure London steampunk?

The humor was nice and really was in line with the way it was done in Thief 1 & 2. I don't know what you mean by cheap humor:

And hey The Dark Mod's levels aren't super big either! We've got some mods that combine the chunks of Thief 3's levels into bigger levels (I believe there were some people that started doing this a couple of years ago) but there's always room to grow!

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

They were kinda Lewis Carroll, if your idea of Lewis Carroll is murderous hellbeasts in surreal and deadly hells.

I agree here. Get it, when it is on sale. It is no terrible game, but it is also not very good. I myself was not the least bothered, that you could not jump anytime and anywhere you wanted. I was detected in the old Thief games too often, when I tried to jump and mantle onto a ledge and misjudged the hight or simply did not hit the edge in the right way. Also I had the impression that you still could mantle quite often and if you couldn't, you at least were not punished by making any sound, you just didn't do anything. I can live with most differences to the old games (also the described quicktime events: they are not great or even difficult, they are just there), but what really bothered me was the missing depth and bad story. I once wikipedia'ed the stroy of Thief Deadly Shadows and the new Thief. The difference in length of the story part alone shows the difference between these two games. But as I said (and AluminumHaste): Buy it, when it's cheap and play it. As long as you don't get your expectations too high, you will not be disapointed.

The humor was nice and really was in line with the way it was done in Thief 1 & 2. I don't know what you mean by cheap humor:

I mean shopkeepers that speak like Mae West and the new banana peel (I mean oil flask) tool to make AI slip and fall like something out of the Three Stooges. I mean horribly silly "smurfication" of the pagan dialect and the wink-wink nudge-nudge dialogue.

What about burricks in Thief Gold ?

Got to agree with that. The underground dwellers weren't interesting to me neither in Thief Gold with burricks in various caverns nor in Thief Deadly Shadows with Kurshok Pagan reptiles.

The other things were a pleasant distraction (when first playing the game).

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
