Thief-2 can some sounds be turned off or removed?

Playing T2 for the first time, the 'Framed' mission, and there is a continual droning sound like a bell, that gets too loud in some areas and is very annoying, (I have chronic tinnitus and Hyperacusis, hyper sensitivity to some sounds that causes pain so it might just be me) but the sound is linked to the main volume and not ambient sounds, so if I turn the volume down I can't hear the enemies, are there individual sound files in the game and could the offending sound file be removed?

sound can be heard from the beginning.

the file AMB_M04.sch (its a text file) in the schema folder in the t2 install location controls the sounds in that map, just play around with the volume settings for hum to make it go away, although you might find that the background drone is made up of several sounds. and you might find out that a lot of the other maps have a background constant drone.

Thanks for your comments, I have managed to reduce the droning sound so it's not so loud, my Hyperacusis is probably exaggerating the sound, but I don't really understand the relevance of the sound in the level, yes, it's The Metal Age but does it need a bell type drone ringing all the way through the level? Hopefully the sound will not be so much of an issue in the rest of the levels.

This is the kind of "music" that Thief supplies for its missions. It is ambient drones, so there is a mood set, but that it doesn't take away from the sounds of the mission. Since sound is such an important part of play style, included are the ambient drones instead of no music or more intrusive styles of music.

It drives me mad when games link dialogue, SFX or music to other strings and disabling one thing removes other sounds that you didn't want taken out. That game Condemned for Xbox is TERRIBLE with that. Dialogue, SFX and music were pretty much altogether on the music string on every cutscene. Since I played with only dialogue and SFX, I missed pretty much everything in all the cutscenes. There weren't many, but ya know...

I know just what you mean about all sounds being linked, I got the Thief-2 drones down to an acceptable level and can still hear footsteps and guards dialogue, I know it's meant to set an atmosphere but I would rather play with no music given the option, to me it's just an irritating noise, apart from that I'm enjoying my first play through.

Sorry to hear about your illness.

One of the advantages of new games is that they have those special functions to help people. More customization is always an advantage in this case. Something not so often found in old games unfortunately.

But glad that you've found a solution.

Do you have a problem specifically with "Thief 2 The Metal Age"? Did you have this in "Thief The Dark Project"?

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

I don't recall having any real issues with the sound in The Dark Project, there are similar ambient droning sounds but they didn't hit the frequencies that aggravate my hearing, I'm now playing the 'Party' level in Thief-2 and so far in the game I've not heard anymore annoying sounds which is good.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
