Laggy on Linux but fine on wine

Hi guys

I would love to play this mod since I have played Thief 1-3 games.

However on Linux it is quite laggy but when I tried it on Wine it is actually smooth and FPS never dips. Quite weird.

My system is Nvidia GTX 770 with i5 4690k so it should be ok.

I am not sure where to find the root of the problem on Linux version.

It not a big deal as I could just play it on Wine but would be better if I can get native version to play smooth.

Thanks

As I recall, the Linux build didn't properly support SSE instructions. I wonder if Wine is somehow translating

those and thus giving you a performance boost.

Other than that?

Maybe Wine is translating TDM's OpenGL calls to more modern equivalents?

Do you have a Desktop compositor (the last I remember of this there was a thing called compiz, I'm old...)?

If so, do you still have performance issues if you disable compositing?

Hi

I don't use any compositor and my desktop environment is MATE. I have checked the settings it and it is already disabled.

Maybe you are right about Wine translating bit.

It isn't a big deal since I could just play it in Wine but I just wondering if any other Linux users also get lags as well.

Hey, i'm using Linux as well. I'm running tdm on my laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. (32 bit)

Intel Pentium CPU P6200 @ 2.13GHz × 2

1,8 GiB RAM

Intel Ironlake Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2

The performance is far from perfect. In normal indoor areas i get around 20 fps, which is ok for me, but on outdoor areas or if there are any AIs around it keeps around 7 fps, which quite sucks

I can also start tdm with wine, but then when i try to load a mission the loading screen freezes.

It would be interesting to know your system data as well for comparing to see if the low fps is a linux related problem or just because my system sucks (more probable).

Hey well I have GTX 770, i5 4690k with 8GB of RAM. I am using Ubuntu Mate 15.04.

I just measured fps on Linux version and it never seems to go above 50 fps. I probably sound silly complaining about that lol.

It should work in Wine for you. Make sure you use clean Wine prefix and latest version of Wine. I have tested it on wine 1.7.52 on PlayOnLinux.

Hmm. That GPU got 22fps in vanilla Doom 3 at 640x480 in one review. Not sure why since it has 12 pipes but there are probably other problems there...

Drivers have probably improved since then but you are probably held back by the pace of Linux driver changes. I presume you have the latest ones?

Yes, i'm pretty sure that i'm using the latest drivers... I got the mesa graphics driver from this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers?field.series_filter=trusty

Today i updated them, which was quite a mistake, because the graphics in tdm are now corrupted:

When i'm walking the light is flickers heavily which makes tdm nearly unplayable. You might see those dark stripes on the ceiling and the floor... I didn't had that before the update.

Is there a way i could restore the previous installed version?

Try forcing Post Processing, AA and AF off in Darkmod.cfg

If that fails, I must refer you to Ubuntu forums for support.

The last time I played with Linux drivers, I was able to use Synaptic to do reverts:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

but things may have changed since then.

Phew, restoring the old driver was more complicated than i thougt. I couldn't do it with synaptic, but fortunately Ubuntu stored the old drivers in /var/cache/apt/archives. So I could go there, copy the old drivers in a new folder and run "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" within that folder to restore the drivers. Oibaf's Version from the 15.09. works fine ^_^

However i encountered a few other strange things while experimenting with the tdm.exe version:

- In the Linux version (.x86) i cannot bind any function to the arrow keys, seems like tdm doesn't recognize the keys. It says "0x00" when i try to bind s.th. to them. (In the past i didn't give much about it and used the numblock instead, but I realized in the .exe-version I can bind them!)

- In tdm.exe I cannot call the console pressing "^".

- The Savegames from the 2 differnet versions don't seem compatible: When I try to load a game saved with the linux version with tdm.exe it keeps stuck at loading; when i try to load a game saved with tdm.exe with the linux version, tdm crashes...

Can anyone confirm some of the above bugs?

The console is normally called by tilde( ` ) or ctrl+alt+ tilde.

Try adding seta com_allowConsole 1 to an autoexec.cfg

Savegames cannot be helped I'm afraid.

Did you try manually setting it in Darkmod.cfg ?

http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Bindings_and_User_Settings

You should also be able to remap the binding in the controls GUI area if you can get to it.

Just escape out the existing directional keys and enter new ones.

That's the way it is set in the Darkmod.cfg:

bind "UPARROW" "_forward"
bind "DOWNARROW" "_back"
bind "LEFTARROW" "_left"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "_right"

It works as it should in the Windows version under wine, but - and this puzzles me a lot - in the tdm linux version when i press the keys, tdm doesn't react...

I suppose with the controls GUI you mean tdm_gui01.pk4/guis/mainmenu_settings_controls.gui ?

That looks quite complicated to me...

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
