Some questions about the contest itself:

1) can I release the mission earlier than Halloween? I'll be on the move that day and need the release the mission before that day.

2) Mission rating poll? Do we use the standard poll with 1-5 stars in categories: appearance, gameplay, story?

1) Of course! It is also a wise strategy to slow down your opponents while they play your FM instead of working! :D

2) How about:

  • Appearance
  • Gameplay
  • Halloween

And for ratings (this is important, since we need a common terminology):

  • Scale is on 1-5, 5 is Great, 4 is Good, 3 is Average, 2 is Could be better, and 1 is Poor.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Keep up the good work! I'm surprised how so many have exterior areas. They can really be a time drain, at least for me. But maybe you have a technique I don't know. ;)

Here is what I've got:

  • I've got a tight focus of the mission, and am sticking to time-saving construction techniques that don't result in a heavy workload down the line. (Although fewer prefabs than anticipated.)
  • I am keeping details suggestive instead of going overboard with them.
  • I am starting from a very precise visual idea of what I want to build. The mission idea came from a nearby old house that is currently in the process of being demolished (as I walk home from work day by day, I can see how the demo crew has stripped down yet another part of it), and I had a very precise picture of the rest by the time I started to build.
  • Finally, most of my practice is in building city missions (although the upcoming PD3 will be my last for a while), so that helps.

Digital preservation is the idea. It was a half-ruined building condemned years ago, but it had classical proportions and there was a certain beauty to it.

I took a break from mapping to fully flesh out my story which I have done and turned into a briefing text as well as an audio recording for the briefing video. Now i'm going back to the mapping side of things to finish implementing the rooms in my house.

Another two hours, another 190 brushes. The outside area I am planning is almost surrounded by buildings now. After that is done comes the detail, then interiors. Fortunately, there is a long weekend coming up, which I expect to use for building most of the remaining terrain.

Ran out of time for today. Elapsed time: 9h.

LF&D finished. Monsterclipped. Added AI. Added AI patrol paths. Added objective items and some loot. Constructed some security measures.

Next up: fine tune AI patrols. Copy paste readables. Make objectives & mission success logic. Shop. Fine tuning. Testing.

Over 1000 terrain brushes now.

Elapsed time 11h.

Made good progress, but then ran into AI navigation issues: had to redesign part of an already made area. This consumed a lot of time.

Objectives are there, plot elements are there. Implemented location settings.

Up next: copy paste readables, shop. final tunings.

The main locations are now built and decorated except for three smaller areas (all one or two rooms). Readables are mostly done, objectives are in place except the final objective, the briefing is finished and the mission folders are ready for liftoff. This is playing it safe, so I can focus on delivery, and squeeze in a beta round if possible.

Also: Sotha has released his mission, but the rest of you are awfully quiet. There were ten "I am in" votes! Come out, come out, whoever you are!

Thus far we at least have evidence that Airship Ballet, Melan, Sotha, Goldwell, and Baal have worked on something.

Demagogue and Grayman has also been alluding to their work here and there (so that's pretty conclusive).

Pretty promising in my book.

If Dragofer and Siyah follow through then we have 9 of 10 accounted for.

Biker dropped out so that's 9 of 9 unless it was originally 11 (etc)?

I would be psyched if even one of these authors produced a new mission!

9? I might need to be institutionalized...

(Edit: Sorry Dragofer, didn't see your post there.)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
