In-game objectives window/screen

For your purposes, you can probably play with:

 

#define OBJECTIVE_TEXT_SCALE 0.26
#define OBJECTIVE_TEXT_FONT "fonts/carleton"

 

#define NUM_OBJECTIVES_PER_PAGE "5"

 

in the header of mainmenu_objectives.gui

 

That should allow you to shrink the text and get more of them on the screen, etc.

 

You'll need to pack your altered version in the guis folder.

There are actually four files associated with the objectives hud:

  • mainmenu_objectives.gui
  • tdm_objectives.gui
  • tdm_objectives_core.gui
  • tdm_objectives_defs.gui

In addition, the whole layout is setup for 5 objectives only. Each of them has an own gui window. So in addition to change the constants you would need to add additional windowDefs.

I'll try to squeeze that in but I imagine you just take the files Obs referenced then alter the headers of each with

the parameters I referenced. (Reduce text scale, change the number of objective per page, etc).

15 objectives per page:

 

10 objectives per page

 

 

15 is definetely too much, I can almost not read the text on my screen.

I can change that. For me personally, even ten objectives are not very appealling. The reason will be that I only have a 17" monitor, running at 1280x1024. Some of you may have bigger ones. I guess it would be the best to make it resolution depending, so that people with bigger screens will get more objectives per page.

EDIT: This is how it looks good for me:

 

 

There are 8 objectives. Note that with this setup only two lines of text are supported, so my little example text is already close to the limit, and that the text scale is already smaller then it originally was (it's 0.24, the original value is 0.26).

 

What would be also worth thinking about is to replace the scrolling with a page turn. This would be much more comfortable imho.

The main menu is much more narrow. I have to reduce the text scale even more there and I have some issues with not properly working line breaks when I change the text scale (don't know what is causing this :( )

 

My suggestion would be to change the ingame objectives gui so it displays 8 objectives per page, and leave the mainmenu objectives screen at 5 objectives per page (don't know if anyone is using this anyway, it is mainly seen when starting the mission and choosing the difficulty). In addition I will implement the page turn (in both guis).

      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
