Question...

An odd toss around of strangeness in my mind.

Why is this forum called Fan Missions?

Wouldn't "TDM Missions" be more fitting title?

Everything here is FM, that's the only TDM missions that there are.

I wasn't around when the forum was created, but the training mission and St. Lucia were done by the TDM team and included with the toolset, so I suspect they figured everything else created using the toolset would be considered to be "made by fans" (i.e. people not on the team).

That many of the team members then went on to create FMs themselves shouldn't confuse the terminology.

Thanks for the history lesson. :-)

Wow, I had no idea TDM started as an idea to make FMs in the tradition of what TDS FMs might be since there was no editor at the time.

Truly these are "Fan Missions" - and the people who display that level of dedication to the Builder are truly fanatics.

Awesome story.

I think Digital Nightfall is the one that originally used the term "Fan Mission" to apply to Thief missions made by fans with the Dromed editor, back in 1998 when he ran the main LGS fan site (TTLG before TTLG), around the time Trimfect made the first FM (Gathering at the Bar) and proved it was possible, and there was a push to release the editor in Thief Gold. And the term just stuck. So that's why we refer to our maps by FM. It's a long tradition we're part of, and IMO all TDM mappers should take notes from classic T1 and T2 FMs, so it's good that we continue the term.

Also, for the record, we (we being Bikerdude usually) occasionally announces T2 FM releases in our FM forum too, just like the TTLG FM forum announces TDM FM releases too. Anyway, I'm part of the "cross-pollination is good" contingent that wants to keep the two folds close to each other, and recognize this greater community, tradition, and spirit of FM makers and players across all the games.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
