Announcing HERESY, a campaign for TDM

Good luck!

Though starting with a Campaign is usually a risky venture (see "The Sly Project" http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/10985-the-sly-project/).

(Actually, even veterans sometimes have trouble completing a campaign... see CoSaS... http://cosas.ttlg.com/:( )

I'd recommend starting with a small mission to get your feet wet before jumping into an extended campaign. Campaigns are easy to start and very, very, very hard to complete.

I wish you perseverance and a lot of enthusiasm! And of course, try to release it mission by mission.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

I second the recommendation to release it mission by mission.

Almost every TDM campaign we have does it that way.

It's usually better for everybody all around.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Actually it might make deadline and be available for the holiday 2015 season!

Realistically, we're looking at a project that is going to take years to complete.

You're announcing it on Facebook when it is years away from completion...?

What's wrong with tha? Thief4 was announced, aloing with a countless number of games to get buzz train going

I don't understand why you think announcing a project years away from completion is somehow an unwise decision.

Well apart from i see you guys have what it seems a different way to think. I dont see why mister @Deadlove dont advertise your work in any way he want.

From a point of view for TDM any advertise from any future work only benefits the MOD. Well thats my point of view.

The FM forum is littered with announcements from people starting campaigns through the years. There was the Sly Project, and the Novice Campaign, Shadow of Opportunity, Johannes' Burock's project (remember those aweseome videos?), and a dozen others from new mappers who disappeared so quickly I can't remember their names. By contrast, you can count the number of TDM campaigns that were actually completed on one hand.

In my experience, the earlier the announcement is made (and the more fanfare accompanying it) the less likely it is to ever come to completion. Of the campaigns that have been completed, all were announced after the work was well underway, like NHAT, which didn't announce until after Goldcochobo had been working on it for 9 months.

It's exciting to announce things. It's NOT exciting to work on a campaign for any extended length of time. Ask the Crucible team.

Of course, I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

You missed out the most awesome one of all:

UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES!!!!!

EDIT: Oh wait, you were only talking about TDM "campaigns", not those from TTLG. I didn't realise there had been so many.

Unforseen Consequences

Time to get out my old TTLG antagonism hat and scream at my monitor...

Though I think HawkFlyAway is more of a blood-boiler these days...

He was the one who started sending out death threats when people reported they had difficulty completing his mission, wasn't he?

Kingers was amusingly delusional, but at least he was never aggressive.

I believe so. I know he was doing a bunch "I'll remake T1 in UE3" screens and was being very erratic/aggressive about user feedback too.

And if working on a campaign begins to seem insurmountable, always remember that the legendary author Charles Dickens published his books in a serialised, piecemeal format.

There's nothing wrong with releasing missions individually as part of a longer campaign. Many authors have done exactly that.

Yes, exciting news, always good to see a campaign being worked on. =) And yeah, releasing each mission as it's completed is a wise way to handle the matter. It allows players to enjoy it and give feedback and maybe some good ideas, some might even want to pitch in and help out. =) Best wishes on the project. :)

Some updated details emerge!

10 missions total.

Some potential (finalized) names.

I still need to come up with the others, or perhaps maybe alter a few titles to better match the overall continuity better.

H E R E S Y

- HAPPILY EVER AFTER
- MOTHER KNOWS BEST
- BLACK ART OF CRIME
- BAITING THE HOOK
- MAKING YOUR CASE
- THE NEW COVENANT
- THROWING THE GAMBIT
- NATURE OF THE BEAST

The story is written, however, it is loosely compiled, as the game plan is to make the missions, and then fit the story in. So more than not main characters won't be making appearances in the missions until the final assembly, and then the story can be fit in.

It's a very lose story, but has lots of depth, so it shouldn't be too hard to bring it to life by adding extra readables, conversations or similar devices to further the plot once the campaign gets far enough along justify stringing the pieces together. This way, if the campaign doesn't get completed, as least the missions that make release can all be played and be enjoyable without having to be connecting to an over arching story.

My philosophy with the over all game playing experience will be as follows. The game levels will start off easier and shorter and become progressively more difficult and longer as the game moves through each of its three acts.

Quick Story info: Your character starts off with amnesia, and needs to piece together what's happened! How cliche, but really I am a sucker to this plot line. Can't tell too much more, but I will in due time!

HELP WANTED:

Most know my DR skills are about as skilled as someone who can build levels for Wolf3d or moderate DOOM levels....

- I am looking for mappers of any caliber to assist in assembling the missions.

I play to build each mission in a modular manner, with several mappers doing a room or two each, and a supervisor acting as a central hub to guide me with putting them together. This way we can take a huge amount of stress of a single mapper being responsible for a complete mission.

- I am offer looking for some modelers. I'm not looking for new models, but alterations on existings models (color changes in clothing, slightly different outfit, add a hat or jacket, those types of things.

- I will be and can handle all the sound design, but may need a bit of assistance in setting up shaders and getting the barks to be assigned in game. Unless someone wants to help, which I will not discourage.

Appendix A: Expect nontraditional thieving and goals. This is going to be a stealth/horror/exploration/adventure game more so than just stealth.

Appendix B: If anyone wants to get involved or is seeking more into, please reply in the thread of send me a PM.

Thanks for the support, my fellow taffers!!

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
