Windows 10: Why you should NOT upgrade...

Also calls it analytics & compares it with Google's analytics

There's crucial difference between analytics in the operating system & analytics built into Google, it's pretty easy for even a novice to use a different search engine like Duckduckgo which has no analytics or tracking but it's a not a trivial task* to use a different OS & for most novices it's impossible.

(* - having said that I am very impressed with how easy Zorin was to install, minor teething problem with wifi which was easily sorted & it's been rock solid ever since, updates don't interfere with whatever else I'm doing & it's turned an old vista laptop that ran like a drugged slug into a fast, extremely usable & easy to use machine)

Holy moly, when will there be a lawsuit? http://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-trying-to-re-enable-windows-10-upgrade-on-windows-7-8-1-twice-a-day-498707.shtml

I'm as eagerly awaiting a lawsuit as I am enjoying watching this mess unfold.

From John Doe in Oregon vs Microsoft?

Only maybe if someone will want to use it on a political agenda, maybe like with some Bill Gates controversies with them being monopolists and all that, but not sure if it'll happen.

I guess Apple could use that... What is ridiculous is that people will still use Windows for the most part so complications will continue to arise either from Windows 10 or any other problem Microsoft has with it's products.

Without competition they don't feel the limits on some things.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

It looks like Microsoft are starting to get nasty about this, there's an update that re enables get windows nagware even if you've disabled it.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/12/microsofts_get_windows_10_nagware_is_showing_signs_of_sentience/

An additional background process has been detected that resets the Registry’s AllowOSUpgrade flag twice a day. Prophylactic measures taken by users to disable the nagware – such as these – therefore have limited use. The additional process has only been found by some users, and appears to arrive in a modified version of the KB patch which unleashes GWX

...GWX already fulfils many of the characteristics of an aggressive malware. Stylistically, the pop-up appears to be modelled after the nasties found on pirate media and porn sites – a pretty classy touch from Microsoft.

Similarities include: GWX won’t take "No" for an answer, and is difficult to disable. It targets old and neglected computer installations (e.g. Windows 7), and the technically naive (home Windows users). More worryingly, GWX now appears to be mutating, changing its techniques in response to preventive measures. It’s cat and mouse out there, and GWX appears to be winning.

If they don't already I suggest people start taking regular image backups of the system disk before running windows update

Looking at the comments, people are unsurprisingly not happy

IMO Microsoft got nasty when they disguised the update that installs GWX as a run-of-the-mill bug-fix patch, to slide it by consumers. https://forum.eset.com/uploads/post-3952-0-96878900-1428318020.png

Also, let us not forget that Microsoft has a history of abusing users, like this blast from the past. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/why-cant-i-change-my-desktop-background

I'm glad there's ChromeOS and Android now, because they prevent MS from pulling stunts like this.

On PC?

I'm lucky if I know how turn on and off a DOS machine anymore!

And it seems they are now targeting business PC's too

No escape: Microsoft injects 'Get Windows 10' nagware into biz PCs

It could be interesting when the first business finds their accounts package or similarly vital piece of software won't run after the update.

And I just heard about UEFI, which is a system designed to only allow an OS with digitally signed binaries load on a PC, seems to have been introduced in the "Designed for Windows 8" accreditation scheme. the idea is to stop rootkits & such from taking over the core software. Currently I think Ubuntu & Mint are signed in this way.

On "Designed for Windows 8" hardware you can turn this switch off so you can run non signed code, say a version of l*nux you compiled yourself or some other flavour.

On "Designed for Windows 10" hardware the ability to turn this switch off is now optional, so OEM's & manufacturers can lock you out of loading an alternative OS with a signature the hardware doesn't recognise.

This was a particularly well executed move. First, secure boot was introduced. When we all feared that it would be used to lock out competitors, the pro-Microsoft people like Ed Bot were shouting that there was nothing to worry about, because the certification specification for Windows 8 (at the time) guaranteed that there would be an off switch. Now here we are at Windows 10, and the requirement for an "off switch" disappears. This mysteriously happens after everyone is finished criticizing secure boot in the media, because its old news by this point.

I would also like to add something to the list of reasons not to upgrade. http://www.geek.com/games/windows-10-doesnt-run-games-with-securom-and-safedisc-drm-1631383/

Now blocking support for the latest CPU's in windows 7/8 - http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/16/10780876/microsoft-windows-support-policy-new-processors-skylake

  • the oddest part of the announcement is who it is coming from. When Intel releases a new CPU, it is generally the motherboard makers working with Intel who provide the correct BIOS emulation modes and drivers for older versions of Windows. It’s somewhat odd that Microsoft is the one announcing this news rather than a company like Intel or AMD stating they won’t be supporting the older platform.
  • After July 2017, computers on the supported list that are still running Windows 7 will still get security updates, but any updates specific to that platform will not be released if it risks the reliability of other Windows 7 or 8.1 platforms.

There are Windows 7 and 8.1 devices out there with Intel's Skylake processor already and the short answer is that it likely won't affect those systems. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 devices powered by Intel's Skylake processor won't just stop working right now or after the 18 months grace period. The move seems to be more of a scare tactic by Microsoft to continue its push to Windows 10 - Looks like click-bait

Does TDM run natively on any of the L*nux flavours ?

i.e. not requiring wine ?

Yes, it certainly does. Watch out for PulseAudio though, it will give you trouble with game sounds, increasing latency and what not. Every time I do a Linux install, Pulseaudio is the first package that gets nuked. TDM runs on 64-bit, too.

BTW, I want to print out and frame this article. http://betanews.com/2016/01/18/disable-those-get-windows-10-pop-ups-with-gwx-stopper/

Expect a patch from Microsoft to turn GWX back on next week... ha ha ha ha

I've got a Skylake in my new Windows 7 machine (which I ardently want to keep running Windows 7, indefinitely if possible). It doesn't look like it should be a massive issue, but should I be at least mildly concerned?

I would say no, more than lickly the move seems to be more of a scare tactic by Microsoft to continue its push to Windows 10 as in click-bait.

  • There are far too many enterprise users out there using Win7/8 for stability and application compatibility reason that upgrade every 3 years. If in 3 years they go to upgrade and thier hardware vender says they have to upgrade to Win10, thats going to piss off a massive amount of M$ market share. In short it dosen't make sense for M$ to be doing this as its PR and market suicide.
  • I can't see intel or AMD or mobo makers being happy with this either, as it will hurt thier bottom line, users wont be able to upgrade to thier newest product's etc.

We should just wait and see what comes out in the news over the next few weeks.

Well I went ahead and upgraded. I did it for the following reasons.

*I rarely run Windows, except for when I want to run programs I can't run on Linux.

*I will eventually be forced to use it when people stop writing software for 7.

*The upgrade was free and as someone who would rather support an alcoholic on the street than give Microsoft another dime (and I hate alcohol!), I decided it was best to upgrade while its free.

*I'm really not worried about them spying on me, because I use btrfs and I know that it will be a cold day in hell before Microsoft supports that.

As part of the upgrade though, I needed to install Windows 7 on a laptop. I typed the product key and it told me it was blocked, so I got to spend an hour on the tele arguing with them to get it to activate. At one point they told me I would need to contact the laptop manufacturer, which was when I threatened to switch to Google products. That got the ball moving. Absolutely zero of the other products I use put me through shit like this, which is why I will never give these ass holes another dime.

And the self inflicted jokes continue, god help you if you want to play The Witcher 3 or any other current games on the latest update of Win10. And the icing on the cake, your wifi adapter might start reporting its not compatible with the p.o.s. OS -

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
