Outlasting Outlast

Over the past three weeks, I played Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph... That was a seriously fucked up game. Fucked. Up! The whole run through I was either iiik or ewww, or both.

The jump scares. Geez. There were a couple of times I was sure I was gonna have a heart attack. I could never tell who was going to be stationary, who'd run past me, or who'd attack me.

Yeah, okay, if a bearded guy runs toward me with a chainsaw or a couple of naked twins with machetes come at, I'm gonna run first and find out later if they just wanted to cuddle. But keeping me guessing, that was done very well.

However... after surviving every shit storm thrown at me, I die at the end?! Well, at least got shot a dozen times. Maybe the Walrider fixed me, I don't know. Maybe that'll be the premise of Outlast 2.

As for the gore and outlandish craziness? Holy. Shit. That Groom bit was just absolute insanity. I mean, I've never previously, in two decades of gaming history, had to shout at the computer screen, "Don't cut off my penis!" And that one operating table (or was it a table with a sowing machine?), yeah, you know the one I mean. Oh. My. God. I want to wash my eyes with bleach to make that image disappear from my brain forever! And what about that gym with the hanging corpses? Man, the writer(s) of this game have to be completely bonkers!

As a scary game, success. ... As for the rest, not so much. Considering the cost of games these days, I place a high value on replayability. And Outlast isn't one of those. It's totally linear with a single way in or out of places and situations. There's only one path to follow each time, and every cutscene and scripted event happens at the exact same time during every single playthrough. So, scary once? Hell yeah. Scary again? Not so much. I can't look forward to anything new with another playthrough.

Got Outlast and the DLC through Steam, so the overall cost was about 30 euros. For any game that goes above twenty bucks, is it unnatural or weird of me to wish the game be replayable? Like TDP, TMA, and TDM? NuThief sucked in this aspect too. Do we have to rely on stuff like Skyrim or The Witcher with their open worlds to get a gaming experience that differs each time you play? Why can't we have a scary game in a small confined space, like an asylum, that allows for more freedom of movement, less linear gameplay, and different outcomes depending on how you play? *sigh*

Anyway, that's just my two cents worth. Or, to be precise, thirty bucks worth.

Sounds like a game truely made for me! :) I played the original Outlast but it bored me a little bit (the gameplay) the sounds and atmosphere were really amazing though.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
