[SOLVED] TDM takes multiple tries to get full framerate

This is a problem which I have seen for years.

Quite often, when I start TDM, at the main menu I see the fps ranging from 40-60fps. After a map loads, frame rates are roughly 20fps lower than normal. Once every several launches, I'll get 60-80fps showing (normal) and fps is as expected.

I am using nvidia proprietary kernel module in Mageia Linux, formerly Mandriva.

Since I have seen this issue in numerous versions of TDM, numerous versions of the nvidia module, and at least 3 different graphics cards, I'm not sure where to look for an solution.

I have not seen this issue with any other game, including Doom3... though I have not tried it in a while.

Sometimes I only need to launch TDM 2 or 3 times to get full frame rate, but sometimes it takes as many as 10 launches until it works properly.

Anyone have any ideas?

SOLVED - Having vsync enabled was causing the game to run at 40-50fps (instead of 60fps). vsync disabled in nvidia-settings fixed this.

Well... it's not solved entirely, but at least it launches more times than not with the proper frame rate.

Strange behavior.

I will note that I have seen toggling post-processing on\off has caused my FPS to return to normal when testing new TDM builds.

I can only say that 2.04 is getting close and it will have some memory leak fixes so perhaps that might stabilize what's happening there.

LOL, sorry to hear of your troubles. This issue is one of the few. Since I am not an "avid gamer", wanting to play every title possible, Linux has not hindered me. All of the games I cared about work well and Valve/Steam is greatly increasing the titles available to Linux users too. I have used linux exclusively since Jan. 1, 2003 and have no regrets.... just a few annoyances here and there* ;)

*most of which I can attribute to my choice of (addiction to) using alpha and beta software.

OK, I have a hunch this might be a driver issue.

If I open a large mission like "Not an Ordinary Guest", I am initially greeted with half or quarter the FPS I expect.

Then if I toggle:

tdm_lg_interleave 2

in the console, I get a huge FPS boost (LG interleave should boost FPS but not this much).

Then if I set

tdm_lg_interleave 1

back (to default) the FPS remains high and the game appears to be back to normal.

This is consistently reproducible now.

When I have the energy, I'll go back to previous Nvidia drivers to see if this something new there or if I need to look at Windows Updates...

I don't suppose there's any kind of rough ETA on this?

8gb Kingston 1600mhz CL8 XMP RAM stock frequency
Sapphire Radeon HD7870 2GB FLeX GHz Edition @ stock @ 1920x1080

This started happening for me again but after fiddling with tdm_lg_interleave, I went to the Nvidia Control Panel and

made a new profile for the 2.04 beta with Single Display and Maximum Performance set along with disabling Threaded Optimizations.

It took me about 5x to get the profile to save but once it took the problem was squashed. It seems that toggling the tdm_lg_interleave

probably sets off some heuristic for the power manager. I really wish I could set this globally but my global settings have been

unresponsive since I got this card. Apparently, the Nvidia control panel is really sensitive to the file paths on your PC and ends up

getting stuck in recursive search patterns looking for game executables. Bah! They probably only tested this on PC's with SSD's.

Anywhoo. There's another possible resolution to the symptom.

Doing "tdm_lg_interleave 2" has no effect on the framerate for me. I tried using that and then back to "tdm_lg_interleave 1" and saw no change whatsoever. So far the only thing I can do is the exit and re-launch TDM until I get 60+fps instead of 40+fps

Oddly enough, after changing "Sync to VBlank" from enabled to disabled in nvidia-settings seems to fix this.

But I wonder why having vsync enabled most often launches the game at around 40fps instead of 60fps. With vsync disabled, I seem to always get 60-80fps at the main menu.

Now if I could only fix plasmashell from crashing upon game exit, all would be perfect.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
