:)... never been a doom fan, but I might buy the game just for this mod!

I often wonder how many people will buy doom3 just to play this mod...

Carmack will shit himself if he finds out that fifty percent of the overall sales of doom3 were due to a mod that is the complete antithesis of his game.

Doom 3 is a programming opus wrapped in a brainless shoot'em up.

It's really just a $50 tech demo. What Carmack really wanted to share with the public was the engine, which is why I think it's so moddable. Of course, most gamers won't buy an engine, so he put "Doom" on the front to get it in peoples homes.

If he could come up with a decent story, that doesn't involve lobbing hand granades at the Devil, he'd have a bona fide classic.

As much as I disagree with some of his opinions on what games should be, there's no denying the genius.

Yes, that's what I've always said. Everything id software has ever released has been that. A cutting edge, ground breaking game engine with a crappy game around it to show it off. They make all their money from people buying the game engine.

Oh of course the general public too, either because they think it looks cool, or to get access to the cool mods that get made for these games.

Heh, as far as Brian at Id is concerned, 'id makes games first, engines second'.

Doom - the game. is beneath my contempt, it falls off the scale, it's underneath the barrel trying to scrape it's way in, so I won't bother. I already had a good go at it over at the doom3world forums anyway, so I'm cool now.

Among other things, I accused shooter fans of being so dumb, they have to use pheromones to communicate.

I enjoyed that one. Arguning with doom fans on a doom forum that doom isn't any good:lol:

Hey oDD, while you're over there, don't start putting words in my mouth:

This is a hardcore stealth game, and I'm not talking Splinter Cell here *spits on ground* which was a linear piece of populist crap aimed at 13 year olds, or Thief Deadly Shadows, which everyone at the Dark Mod despises.

I enjoyed Deadly Shadows, as did Springheel (from what I've heard). I certainly didn't 'despise' it. :)

That's not a very nice thing to say, some of us like Doom and other 'kill them all' games and are still able to grasp and enjoy the Thief series.

To tell you the truth, i quite enjoyed Doom3, even though the shooting got on my nerves. But the actual plotline is suprisingly very well thought up and fleshed out. Something like that there were people on mars before and then demons invaded and the people sacrificed themselves to make the soulcube which kills the doomlords and the survivors then went to earth sorta thing. It was quite fun. But again, i did not enjoy shooting 10000 bullets to kill 1 guy. So the first thing i did was change the damage, the second is made it all shoot projectiles (so i could have bullettime :) ).

Whats wrong with being a shooter fan? I consider myself a fan of FPS's, and also one of RTS's and RPG's.

I'm not sure if you are just making a cheeky comment or simply being close-minded, but it is possible to enjoy various game genres as they are meant to deliver gaming entertainment in different ways.

Besides you can break down any game into a mindless automated process no matter what the genre.

I still count the original Unreal as one of my favorite games of all time, and it's nothing more than a straight up "stupid" shooter.

It's all about how much fun you're having. Thief might be a more cerebral experience than a shooter, but that doesn't make it any better than a less complex game just because of that. It's not so much the type of game as it is the quality of the experience for me.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty alright too. Not as good as Thief Gold, but hardly the massive pile of crap you make it out to be.

The worst I can say about it is: It was so uninspired that it doesn't stick in my mind. T1/T2 does.

That doesn't mean that it is really bad, but I wouldn't count it as good. I guess if I had only played TDS I would have said "Ok. Now lets look for the next game." I doubt I would have sticked to Thief as I do now.

Count me in. :) I didn't like Doom 3 because it really is boring but I like D1 and D2 and plyed it a lot. And for current shooters, I think that Painkiller is MUCH better than D3. Of course it doesn't have dynamic lighting, but as a shooter it is much more fun and atmospheric.

Like I said, some people simply have no taste and will play anything and like it, just like some people have no taste and will eat anything and like it.

Shooters are the gastronomic equivalent of a big mac. I despise fast food and would rather starve than eat any, while other people (whom I look down upon with a disgusted expression) can't get enough.

Well oDD, you can call it "eating anything", but the rest of us call it "having diverse taste".

Your analogy for fast food isn't appropriate. I wouldn't say I can't get enough of FPSs, its just that there are a few good ones out there. Doom 3 isn't the best of them by far, but it has its good qualities.

Look at it this way - me and my 2 brothers play Thievery UT, its the most adrenalin inducing and exciting game we can ever play, for all the reasons we play Thief, except to the power of 25 since its involving real humans as guards and Thieves.

We also play Serious Sam 2 on co-op. It would seem to be another "simple FPS" but its just excecuted so flawlessly and it keeps the action coming "OMG the horizon is crawling with a wave of enemies again!" and throws in some really cool unique bits, like the part where you start at the top of the tower and the floors explode one by one at intervals, so you fall down a floor at a time in a pile of rubble, or the time you're all in a HUGE tube with gravity pulling outwards, so you're all running around the walls of it, its really trippy.

Serious Sam 2 is exciting and fun, probably not as much as Theivery UT, but is exciting in a way that Thievery UT could never be, because it's different.

And most people like variety in their lives.

Oh, yeah, great attitude Dram- stand up for your principals even if they're wrong. I'm glad people in other jobs don't have that arrogant opinion.

Doctor - "Sore throat, eh? It's probably just a cold"

Patient - "Ok, thanks Doc"

2 weeks later:

Doctor - "I said it's just a cold, now go have a hot lemon drink and spend a few days wrapped up warm in in bed"

Patient - "But doc, what about the huge lump?"

Doctor - "That's just you larynx - trust me, I'm a doctor"

3 weeks later:

Doctor - "You again"?

Patient - " I saw the specialist and he says it's cancer, if I have an operation in the next 3 days they might be able to save me"

Doctor - "Nonsense, it's just a bit of swelling due to all the lemon drinks you've been having, take these tablets, and the swelling will be gone by Tuesday"

Wedensday, at autopsy:

Doctor -"I just can't believe it. In 35 years or practicing I've never seen anyone die from a cold before"

Pathologist, pulling huge malignant tumor from patient's throat - "Yup, that's one hell of a virus alright..."

I liked Serious Sam 2. It was different from the general swathe of shooters though, in that you can kill enemies in one or 2 hits, but there are huge numbers of them. Most shooters have a ridiculous senario where you have to pump an entire clip of ammo into something to get it to die.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.
