Small Request?

Demigod

Recommended Posts

I haven’t posted any images, or got any work done today as I had to reformat my computer. I had a very nasty crash no doubt brought about by running dromed, doom edit, winamp, painshop pro, gimp, mozilla and powerdvd all at the same time.

Yes a duel ( is it duel or dual? sorry to be thick) core cpu would be nice

But the upshot of this is that the map I was working on, the backup, and strangely half the other files in my map dir were corrupted and windows refused to boot except in safe mode where it promptly crashed. To save several hours I just formatted and I now have everything up and running again.

Now its not all bad as I, luckily, have a back up from last night so I just lost a little work today but on to the request.

Can someone with knowledge of the archaic language of dos write me a .bat file, or rather just tell me how, that will make a backup of my map dir on start-up? I know how to set the start-up to work but I don’t know how to make dos backup a dir. Does anyone know?

Thanks

p.s. I wasn’t sure if I should post this in general or not :)

You need to use XCOPY.

To make a bat file, just make a .txt file and save it as .bat

Then put it in your startup.

The only thing you need to enter into this batch file is;

xcopy path1\ path2\ /e

where path1\ is the source, and path2\ is the destination, so

xcopy C:\Doom3\maps C:\maps_backup\ /e

would copy all the stuff from maps folder (including sub directories) to the maps_backup folder. Make sure you include the \ on the end of the path name.

The /e tells it to copy everything including subdirectories.

Making a backupo like this is best if done on a different partition, or even better making it on another harddrive. Also if you just do it like this, you should at least rename the old bakcup before you create the new one, so you have at least two copies. One that should work and the new one (which could be corrupted).

there's a neat little freeware tool called VIF Archiver, that allows you to back up certain files and/or folders in zip-format and also has a shortcut for doing so and then shutting down your computer.

use that shortcut everytime you turn your system off and you're on the safe side.

you can find it right here: http://www.softcat.org/vif/index.php

kind regards

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
