Wierd Issue in TDM 2.03/2.04

Im getting a wierd error. I setup a drop objective which triggered an AI to go somewhere. Now when I try to load the map

with map manor72 I get an error line 1 missing trailer quote. That's where it all fell in the bin.

 

So I deleted the objective and tested it again, and this time it loads the map but after I touch a Readable, I can't frob anything. The wierd thing is even if I load an earlier map say manor66 I get the same issue. I tested another map Knighton Manor and the issue doesn't happen there so it's an issue with my map.

 

So I tried an earlier map manor55 (month ago which was good, dmapped it). Same issue. Can't frob after picking up a readable. So after this error, I'm wondering if it's a dmap issue, so instead of quiting and reloading, I just map manor54 which loads but I can't click Attack to start. The game crashed.

 

So I reload the game and map manor54 again without dmapping. I get the same error. This map was compliled over a month ago and I know is good, it worked fine before. This error started on 2.03 the day before I updated to 2.04 which makes me think it's not a 2.04 issue. I thought at first it was a map issue but it can't be. Now I'm thinking it's a bug. Hell I even tried map manor27 which was months ago and as soon as I tried to read a readable, the game crashed.

 

I think the objective issue is a map issue, but it seems it's found a game bug.

 

Now I tried posting this in Newbie DR questions but got no help. So I include condump of both dmapping and mapping manor72.

I would hate to have to abandon my almost complete map because of this bug. It happens on every version of my maps even though prior to doing the objectives,

they all worked perfectly. How one error in a map can fuck up every other of my maps puzzles me. Worst of all, it's looking like no one here no's why

this is happening.

Have you tried exporting the contents of the map as a prefab and then import that into a fresh map.

Yeh I did BD, but it didn't help, with or without the objective that prevents the map from loading.

if the bug is in the backup map files is there a chance that the bug is not in a map file but something like the <name of map>.xd readable file, in the xdata directory

 

How would I fix it if it was? There was two xdata files there, I deleted the oldest. It made no difference.

I think one of the older DR builds had a bad Readable Editor. That said, perhaps teh_saccade was implying that you were manually editing the xd files

in a text editor?

No, I'm using the Readable Editor. Also the build is pretty late. Greebo gave me a new build so I could work with a Quake 3 map. That will be my next map.

 

For now I'm using DR on my existing map on the same DR build. Latest I think.

 

The other issue with this is that Dmap no longer recognises map files in fms/fmsname/map

If I try to dmap a map in that folder it reports not found. All this started when I added the drop object/ai go here objective just after I added a new readable (the drop object).

if you directly edit the xd file, and use the 'return' or 'enter' key to create a new line in a body of text, loading the map in thedarkmod.exe will cause a missing " error, as a '\n' instead of 'return' or 'enter' should be used to stop this type of error. the program sees \n as new line. eg

 

"this\ntext\nis\nok.\n"

 

"while

this

will be

seen

as"

 

"while <-----is missing " at its end.

No, I've only used the Readables Editor. Now here's something else wierd.

 

I deleted all the readables on the map and the .xd file. Then made a new readable, which created

a new .xd file using the Readable Editor and I get the same problem. I can pick it up but can't frob it. It flashes

green but doesn't open.

 

It's a pain, cause I can't do anymore work since the whole map is done, all the readables are done (were)

and I just needed to do the objectives, briefing etc. Most frustrating. :(

No, I created the xdata file myself by using entity atdm:readable_mobile_paper01 after setting the mod folder in preferences. I did read the wiki on how to do this first. First I tried the atdm: readable_base but that didn't seem right.

 

I've not uninstalled DR or TDM as of yet, I was hoping to avoid that, however if it's not solved by tomorrow I'll probably try that next.

 

I am getting these errors in game with map loaded. However this is a test version of the map with most of the readables deleted, just one test one and

all objectives deleted. This is probably the cause of these errors.

From these two messages I would assume, that TDM cannot find the xdata definition of the two documents. I would suggest to copy the names used in the xdata file and paste them into the xdata spawnarg in DR. That way you can definitely exclude any spelling errors (I would recommend to do this all the time). Apart from that, it would appear that TDM does not recognise your xdata. Maybe it is in the wrong folder. When I had a similar problem, the readable editor saved all changes into a xdata file in /root/maps/<mapname>/, but TDM wanted the file to be in /root/xdata/. I used the startmap (and included preset readables) as a base for my WIP and had the problem, that changes from the preset readables did not apply, when I changed it in the Readables Editor.

These two say, that there is no defined number of pages for your document. However, this seems very strange, when you used the Readables Editor, as it defines the number of pages. You can search your xdata file for "num_pages" and see if there is either no number defined or it is set to "0". Also, you might want to check, if this line is missing in the xdata definitions of the stated readables.

 

EDIT: Just noticed, that these are the same errors for two differrent documents. Thought first, that its four independent messages. This way, it might be, that only the first part of my answer applies. If TDM cannot find your xdata definition, it makes sense, that it cannot find a number of pages for your document (as it is inside the definition).

The "not being able to interact with anything after touching a broken readable" is a known bug in 2.03 (at least by me). Make sure you type reloadxdata in the console every time you make changes to your readables and don't want to restart the game. Reloading the map alone won't do it.

 

Don't use _world versions of the gui templates. What stumpy said is also correct. Make sure you've not mixed single and double quotes somewhere. If you're using a double quote inside a string, make sure to use an escape character before it, like this: "This is what we call /"Page 1/" of the readable." (It should be forward slash but it might be backslash, I don't quite remember.)

 

I think I've also had cases where DR/The readable editor saves the .xd files at the wrong folder. For reference, the readables path should be fms/my_fm/xdata/my_fm.xd. If you're using version control, you might've updated your map's name with bigger numbers but not your .xd file to match.

Ok, I've just gone through and uninstalled DR and TDM and reinstalled them both.

 

I copied the current map (one giving issues) and deleted the offending objective that is causing the map to not load. Then I deleted every readable entity

on the map, and deleted the xdata folder.

 

Now the map should have no load issues due to objective (it doesn't,) and it should have no more errors from readables. It does. I even manually edited the

map file and found a ghost readable and removed it (entity 1506).

 

Then I tested the map, no readables, no objective and there was no readable error.

 

So, then I add a brand spanking new readable entity to the map atdm_readable_mobile_paper01_1 using the Readable Editor

 

Dmap the map, then map it. I shouldn't have the frobbing issue now, and there shouldn't be any errors showing in the console. Frobbing issue remains

and I still get this error in the console

No sign of the quote error from above though.

 

I've had a migraine for days now from this and I can't see what could be causing this to occur since it's a brand new TDM and a brand new DR. If it wasn't for the frobbing issue, I could just skip back to an earlier version but this frobbing issue is happening on every single version, even when I delete all readables, xdata folder and make a new readable.

 

Intensely frustrated. All the map needs now is the readables put back in (text is backed up), the objectives defined and brieding/shop stuff done and it's finished.

 

So frustrating.

My best advice would be try to lower the number of variables in your troubleshooting. Make the simplest test map and try repeat those steps (make mobile readable entity, fill it up through the readable editor, test in-game), that way we can see if the problem's specifically related to something in your map (entities, objectives etc) or not.

I agree, the smaller you make your test build, the easier it is to locate the error.

 

However, I have another suggestion, that might help (as I understand the frustration from days of bug hunting): You could use the startmap, that is provided on the homepage. This contains functioning readables and objectives. I would first test, if the readables work correctly (in order to exclude any TDM problems) and then use a readable given there, including the name it uses. Just change the text the readable contains and see, if it accepts the changes. If it does, copy the rest of your map into this one and delete the parts of the startmap you don't need. If it does not, I am 100% sure, that the xdata is saved in the wrong location. Also, the objectives should work and can simply be modified instead of being created from scratch. This also avoids errors, that might occur due to small spelling/punctuation mistakes.

Both really good suggestions.

 

First. I have a test map, a room, a bed, a light and a player spawn. I added a readable. I can pick it up, but not frob it. Here's the test map with compiled files and xdata.

Now Startmap had issues. In DR it gets an error when I try to open the Readable Editor. States it can't find the xdata file. The Startmap.pk4 was extracted

into fms/Startmap folder including all sub folders. I just opened the map file from the maps folder, and get the error. The xdata folder surprisingly

didn't have a mapname.xd file, it had briefing.xd and custom.xd. Maybe why the error? Could you tell me if you get an error opening Startmap?

 

Thanks so much for helping me sort this guys, it really means a lot. I really don't want to give up on this.

The custom.xd file contains the xdata of the startmap. Just rename it to <mapname>.xd. This sould do the trick. If it still does not recognise it, copy it into root/xdata. As said before, I had problems when the xdata was not in the root/xdata folder.

 

I actually used the startmap for my WIP and apart from this, I did not encounter any problems with it.

Ok the Startmap works if I change one of the text in one of the books, then I can pick it up and frob it.

 

So I deleted everything in startmap, copied over everything from my map into Startmap, and deleted all readables, and saved it under

a new name. The objective wouldn't load again (deleted it) map loaded but again could not frob a newly made

readable.

 

I just don't get it!

 

I'd forgotten about Startmap. It's cool, showed me how to do a couple of objectives. Very cool. Forgot about this map. There's also some AI there I didn't know about.

Ok, this is really strange. The only thing I can think of right now is: What is the name of your map? If you have a hyphen in your mapname (and consequently in all file names, you changed), it might be, that TDM cannot read the file (as it happened in case of my sound file). Does it still work, when you copy everything into the Startmap, but don't change the name? Now that I think about it, it might even be, that TDM might somehow use the mapname, when it reads out objectives (but this is only a wild guess), which is why it may cause a problem.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
