domain reg in past few days.

I noticed months ago, after you were synflood DOS'd in August (http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/18240-problem-connecting-to-forum/?hl=%2Bforum+%2Bdown), that the domain name was up for renewal on 27th January 2017.

Considering how everyone is a volunteer and "it's all above paygrade", it was my plan to do a small surprise for you lot and so I put in a pre-bid for renewal, intending to gift you guys the website/transfer ownership after fact, paid up front, for the next few years.
Get it hosted by someone decent, where the site can't be taken down for 24 hours by a simple msfconsole synflood, pls ensure that the yearly registration was a backseat issue for funding for the next few years - and perhaps (since I'm close to giving up on this fkn level because of the ridiculous "no-damage movers" business) earn a modicum of respect through generosity of not only time but cold, hard cash and forethought, also.

(so that moves would cause damage again, because it's bloody stupid that they don't and I'm [-] <--- this close to giving up on rebuilding everything because I have no idea if the next version is going to render another several hundred hours' work on a level totally worthless or not).

Well done whoever has outbid me (matthias baumann/taaki?) - the broker informs me that it might now not be possible to perform such an action of payment and transition of ownership until 2021/4.

Someone's inadvertently blocked a random act of kindness, that I'd been planning since the DOS attack in August, (and the rest... eg, some morons haven't heard of a proxy chain...) but has saved me a few bucks (so thanks).

I'm instead i'm donating the money to a random Just Giving page, on behalf of www.thedarkmod.com <--- that's your new xmas present. Someone else's charity walk for fat people's problems, where they walk a few meters and get on the front page of the news and raise a billion pounds for body confidence in bikinis for whales..

Cheers.

//guess i can cancel that order now.

You know - this site could be pulling in almost 3k a year from a single ad on teh front page for a big-name stealth game, considering teh traffic... if someone was to arrange for such a thing and grab a container to patch into the main page, right margin.

That's a decent lump p/a. to reinvest and cover costs for hosting, alcohol, strippers, dope and cheeseburgers.

Maybe I ought to have said something sooner, but - considering my reputation round here is pretty shit... I'd probably have been told to piss off again.
et
"oh, don't help us pete, it's above paygrade to "//" and ask questions or try to be nice and update wikis, provide solutions, make maps that no-one even notices and try to be generally helpful towards a project that you thought was worthy of spending time and money on".

I thought it'd be a nice thing to do for the community, while also providing some longer-term security and ability to temporarily consolidate assets, which might otherwise have been impossible / fragmented between free mirrors and awkward ftp's, while providing a means of income in order to perpetuate the increasing hosting through liasing with douchebags that I'd rather not mention but don't mind talking with, because sometimes you have to deal with the devil to get fkn movers causing damage again and not have to spend several hundred hours rebuilding an entire map that you've already built twice before.

really can't be getting on with rebuilding everything again.

sorry, giving up and going back to working on something else.

was a fun experience, better than mapping using dromed for sure, made some cool stuff and some nice missions to play for myself, like the new features, was fun coming up with solutions to problems and all that that but ... starting all over again on the main thing after 300 hours and then again once more after another 400 is too much - it's taking a lot of time because of a change in teh game from version to version, and this has meant too much extra stuff to do.

thanks for the fun and the game. Maybe i'll upload all the maps and textures and sounds and scripts and prefabs and graphics and models and xd's and stuff to "abandoned work" one day - it's all backed up on g-drive and fairly neatly organised.

If it's impossible to lure zombies, skels and haunts into a massive trash compactor, or the player can't die from traps - i dont' see the point in making the puzzle / stealth / non-violent consequence pathways of the open-world - the mission hub is working but ... most of the jobs from the job board that are "non-violent" are now useless... half the game's gone.

it'd be just another big city mission, but a big city where you'd have to go back and forth a lot over the same ground, which is proving to be very boring - there's hardly any creative problem solving and no need to explore to meet objectives - no need to figure a way past an area, can just waltz it or use a box or block or - most of the time - just walk it... just don't have the thought-time to devote to this any more - rather spend it volunteering at erowid.

Or playing games or working on others like RO2 or ARMA or source mods or something. Sorry...

Guess it was some kinda sign that the domain reg was renewed - hope it didn't cost more cos of trying to help out.
If it did, PM me and I'll refund the difference.

See ya,

Pete..

Certainly a lovely gesture teh_saccade and I certainly appreciate the thoughtfulness. I'm pretty certain though that plans for domain payments were underway some time ago. Probably something that should have been brought up with one of the mod leads in advance. It might have come as an unpleasant surprise to see someone else had snapped up the domain without telling us. lol All the same, thanks. It's a very generous offer.

Hmm, guess I'm not following too well on this - how can someone just come in and bid on a domain that's already owned by someone else? Especially when it hasn't expired yet? As Oldjim said, there would be chaos with domains being stolen all the time. Seems very weird, I'm tempted to call BS on this entire thing.

this little dance is almost doubles the value of domain but pre-bid is 80 dollar only if registrant partner does not update and allows to fall past date. The price will rise the more it is looked at. Many registraters set the price on how many people are whois looking at informations: http://whois.uanic.name/cost/thedarkmod.com.html canada ip 192.99.10.220. Previously assumed 20,000usd now more. Prudent move hosting is better: http://whois.uanic.name/ip/192.99.10.220.html.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
