would it be possible to implement an ironman mode in Darkmod?

I've been playing Call of Chernobyl for quite some time with this mode, All it does is when you die, All your saves are removed, it gives you a sense of mortality and very immersive that you have to think and be very careful before doing almost anything in the game.

it would be nice to have this mode or a limited number of saves similar to Hitman if it's possible.

It is possible and Obstorte worked on it.

IIRC, the end result has been that it has not been used much. Stealth game player base are apparently really dependent on the ability to save when they want. Why would a mapper make an ironman mission when some players outright refuse to play it if saves are disabled?

Poll and discussion here:

You could always unbind the quick save and load buttons and simply choose not to save... Why is it necessary to have a system to enforce your abstinence from saving? I know the thrill of mortality disabling saves generate, but I think you can get it simply by choosing not to save.

Or perhaps a separate ironman-mod: a .pk4 package you install into your tdm folder, which removes saving completely by unbinding quicksave buttons and overriding game save GUI?

Yes, I have implemented the possibility to restrict or even disable the saves. But this is something the mappers have to choose for their mission, not something that is handled by the players. However, the reason for me to implement was never to create an ironman mod or something, just another possibility for mappers to alter the gameplay.

If you want to ironman TDM missions, I would follow Sotha's suggestion and just unbind the quicksave key.

The stat screen shows your saves, so you can verify you've ironmanned a level. That's the important part, I think.

This.

Unbind save and load if you want, and let your results speak for themselves.

Iron Thief on classic Thief levels is a challenge without the option, it can be here too.

I like to record difficult stealth games, and right now you wonderful people are the only ones delivering on that front.

I dont want such restrictions from the mapper or developer.
As a user, i want to decide that for myself.
A pk4 with modified settings, you can copy inside the mission, is almost easy to do.

If you want it now, you have to do it yourself.
How?
for starters, create your own pk4 (standard zip file), copy modified files from tdm_gui01.pk4 & tdm_base01.pk4 to it and copy the pk4 to the a mission folder.

And thats what I did.

Ok, I created the ironmanmode-mod.

This disables the save and load options of a fanmission or completely in the game.

Installation

  1. download it from my google drive tdm projects folder (select tdm-other folder).
  2. Extract the zip and copy the ironmanmode.pk4 file to the location where you disable the save and load options:
    Only in a fanmission:
copy ironmanmode.pk4 to the folder of the installed mission. (for example darkmod\fms\saintlucia)
    In the dark mod completely:
copy the ironmanmode.pk4 into your darkmod folder.
  3. Start darkmod.

Uninstall

To delete this mod, just remove the ironmanmode.pk4.

And the save and load options not disabled.

Notes

20161203

Disabled the load/save buttons in mainmenu and ingame-mainmenu.

20161202

At the moment version 20161202 is just a quick and dirty solution.

The save/load menu points to the tdm credits. But when you close the credits screen, the credits animation plays on every screen.

I enable and disable mod pk4s by just changing the filetype to something like .pk4off to turn it off, and back to .pk4 to turn it back on.

It might that the attack button doesnt work. So, you cant play a mission.

Will fix this in a few days.

Fixed that.

And removed the load/save option in the mainmenu and mainmenu ingame, in version 20161203.

Uploaded that version to my google drive.

Going now for the load/save controls in the config menu.

This is just like playing Hitman on the hardest Difficulty if I remember correctly but it's not like Coc's ironman mode. This is from their site

  • Q: What is Ironman mode?
  • A: When you die all your saves linked to your current character are removed.

Which basically means that you can save normally but when you die, all the saves will get deleted. Still your tweak is awesome especially for the people who wants more challenging game play and are like me spamming f5 whenever exploring a new area :P

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
