Testing briefings

Recommended Posts

At the moment, every time I want to test an adjustment to an animated briefing, I have to bundle the mission into a pk4, move the pk4 into the fms folder, install the fm and start the mission. I remember that there is an easier way to do this, but I forget what it is. Can anyone refresh my memory or point me to the right wiki post?

What if you make a .pk4. Install it normally.

Then when the .pk4 is installed, unpack the .pk4 file into the mission folder and remove the .pk4 file.

End result should be fm folder with all the mission files, and no .pk4.

Now if you edit any of the files, effects should be immediately visible just by relaunching TDM and the mission.

Wow, I really wish I'd known about that method sooner.

You don't have to relaunch the mission. Just type reloadDecls in the console

and all entity defs, particles, materials, textures, etc will reload in realtime.

You don't have to pack the misssion to be able to launch it. You can keep the files unpacked in the respective fm folder. Aloso note, that you can start building your missions with the files placed in the fm folder already. You just have to set the fm folder in the preferences in DarkRadiant to have access to your custom stuff.

I've always do it like that as it has two big advantages:

  1. You have all the files needed for your fm already in place, so you don't have to collect them when shipping the fm just to find out that you've overseen a file.
  2. Your custom stuff wont influence other fms.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
