Sandboxie - feedback & recomendations

Afternoon

 

Im thinking of trying out "The Division" as its free to play untill the 7th, but its requires a Uplay Account.

 

I firmly place Uplay in the same box as Origin, as in dont trust it not to scan my harddrive or send telemetry about anything I do back to base etc. So to that end I installed 'Sandboxie'.

 

As I understand it the app is supposed to 'sandbox' an application, and stop is from browsing/scanning outside of its memory space and HDD location of itself and any games assigned to it.

 

Does anyone had an exp of this app or apps like it..?

It won't prevent the applications from seeing your hard drive or registry. Applications need that data to operate. However, any changes made to these are only saved in the sandbox and only effect applications running in that sandbox. Because all the changes are stored in the sandbox only, it is easy to remove any application in the sandbox by simply "emptying" it by using the delete contents function. You can prevent an application from accessing the internet at all, but you need to configure the specific sandbox for that to work. I've also found several games do not work in sandboxie. They either do not run, or the game controls do not work correctly. Regular applications usually do not give me trouble.

Origin are known to, and Uplay are rumoured to, search your harddrive for pirate versions of games they have copyright on.

I trialled it a while ago as I admin a forum and occasionally have to check out dodgy links, it appeared to do what it said on the tin, but I did notice that something in sandboxie stole focus periodically.

 

I'd be typing away & then I'd notice the words weren't appearing on screen, took sandboxie off & it stopped, I never got round to sorting that out, might not do it anymore, this was a while ago

 

I didn't do a very extensive test but that's the only issue I found
