New Vertex Paint Tutorial

Hey guys, I thought I'd give a little bit back to the community and decided to go ahead and document my workflow regarding Vertex Painting on models. I tried to keep it as clean and simple as possible and even kept the modeling portion out of it. This workflow will show you how to quickly convert brushwork to meshes, paint said mesh, all the way to covering the material and final steps. The goal is to arm regular (non-modeler) mappers with the knowledge of how to get vertex painted assets into their projects without having to learn a full modeling app to achieve that.

I wanted to post here first in case I missed anything big or needed to edit it. Otherwise I think I've got all my bases covered in it...

Go ahead give it a quick read and lemme know what ya'll think. I wasn't sure how to add it to the tutorial index but if someone could list it there, that would also be wonderful.

I think this is an internal part of the forum, so it might not be helpful to post it here. The Editors Guild is probably the more appropriate place. Maybe and admin can move this thread, if you are ok with it.

Yeah that's fine, I was just asking about how the tutorial could be linked up properly with the main page. Otherwise yeah I don't have a problem with this being in a public thread.

The tutorial is linked now. It can be found under Editing/Vertex_Painting.

On another note: It might make sense if you make the title a bit more specific, like "Applying Vertex Painting on Brushwork using Lightwave" or so.

Because Vertex Paints can only be applied to models themselves I really just wanted the main header to be the technical description. Mainly so you could just search that to load it directly. I mean I could set it to something like, "Vertex Painting with Lightwave" but much more than that would be a bit overkill. Hoping maybe I can do some more model related tutorials later on again.

I wrote a script that allows you to apply vertex painting in DR. The result is a model, too. but you don't need a modeling program than.

In addition the workflow might differ when using a different modeling program (like Maya, 3DSMax or Blender).

"Vertex Painting with Lightwave" is fine to me, you can even shorten it to "Vertex Painting (Lightwave)". It's just better to not keep the tutorial name too general in case someone else wants to add an article dealing with the same stuff (Vertex Painting in your case) but using a different method. The title "Vertex Painting" would probably be most appropriate for an article dealing with the general principle, as not everyone may know what this is.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
