Driver problem or GPU problem?

I've been getting more and more frequent crashes when running TDM.

This started happening out of the blue about two months ago. First, the error was: "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver". This would cause TDM to hang and then crash.

After this happened a few times I updated to the most recent drivers, and the error changed slightly to an appcrash with "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver detected a problem with display driver", with the faulty app being nvoglv32.DLL. When TDM crashes, it also causes DR, and Lightwave to crash as well if they're open. If Photoshop is open it gives a "Photoshop has encountered problem with display driver and has disabled GPU enhancements." warning.

The crashes are happening more frequently in TDM now. Used to be once a week, now it seems to happen any time I have TDM open for more than 5 minutes. And I just got that Photoshop warning message this morning even though I hadn't opened TDM.

I got messages like this two years ago, and got a new video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti) , which made them go away. Two years seems like a short time for a GPU to start dying...is there any way to confirm that the card is the problem? I don't mind replacing it if so, but I don't want to spend a couple hundred on a new card and then find out the problem still happens.

Hmm.

Some folks are reporting that dynamic power management is causing this.

Make sure this is set:

1. Open your NVIDIA Control Panel and select “Manage 3D settings”
2. Then, select the “Power Management mode” and change the option from “Adaptive” to “Prefer maximum performance”
3. Save your changes, and your are done!

Should have gone with a 3-year warranty card back theen...

That was one of the things I tried along the way.

What driver version do you have installed?

388.59. Although I see they released a 388.71 two weeks ago, so I supposed I should try that.

One thing to keep in mind is that newer Nvidia drivers are paired with Windows Updates.

This is getting to be more and more convoluted as Windows 10 changes it's video software stack

the driver must also be updated to match.

I'm not sure where things are with older OS's (Win 7, 8, 8.1) but I suspect that you'd want to stick

with drivers that predate the Windows 10 Creators update where this mess began.

I don't think this is so important with OpenGL part.

I also had a weird crash about a week ago when playing "Volta II - Cauldron of the Gods", I believe it was. (Someone very familiar with the map can probably figure out where I was on the map based on the screenshot. Or I can probably load a recent save to find out, if you need me to.) The screen froze solid on me and had weird green squiggly icons all over (see photos), yet I'm pretty sure I could still hear the game's audio. I had to press and hold my PC's power button to restart because I couldn't do anything; key presses weren't doing anything. I either assumed/surmised on my own that it was an nVidia problem, or saw a note upon reboot (sorry I don't remember which).

I'm not sure if it was an issue with the map, Dark Mod, my computer, or aliens were trying to communicate with me :) But I can say I haven't had any crashes in a while, and I've never ever seen that type of issue.

EDIT: Hmm... The map is called "VOLTa"... my screen got inundated with a bunch of "VOLT" icons?? Perhaps the map is becoming sentient... :o

Is this with the 2.05 release of TDM or svn build?

I didn't answer that because I didn't have a record of a crash in 2.05...I first noticed this when beta-testing Kingsal's mission in 2.06, and I started recording the crashes shortly after. Since you asked, I've been trying to trigger a crash in 2.05, and so far I haven't been able to do so. I'll keep trying... I'd rather it be a problem with the GPU than something caused specifically by 2.06, since no one else seems to be reporting a problem.

Springheel, any plans on upgrading that 750ti? It's a Maxwell card, but well, it's not very good.

Is it a 2 GB card?

It's enough BUT the one I got 3 years ago now has some fan voltage regulation problems :P

I suggest to wait for a 2050 Ti.

I think it's 2GB, yes. I probably wouldn't bother replacing it if it weren't for these crashes, since I don't play many demanding games, but I might have to. Any recommendations?

Well, I have a GTX 670 MSI card just sitting here doing nothing I could mail to you.

It's a gen older than your card but it destroys it in every benchmark. It's about twice as powerful.

Thanks, that's a generous offer. I'll have to double-check my PSU...the GTX670 has a recommended 500W from what I looked up, and I have doubts mine is that high. Still, it would be cheaper to replace a PSU than a GPU.

  • 3 months later...

I did, and it seems to work fine. Though the problems might not have been caused by my GPU in the first place. I haven't had a crash since this: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/18982-tdm-206/?p=418808

Still grateful for your efforts to help though...it's a better card than I had before even if the problem was something else.

Not a problem, don't forget those AIB cards are designed to be very overclockable.

I had that one running as high as 1150Mhz on the core, but then it got moved to my wife's computer and she didn't play games so it was back to stock.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
