These are previews, you can DL the 1920x1080 once you click on them. I fully agree that there's room for improvement when it comes to showcasing the soft shadows. I just went through some of my favorite FM spots that I could remember, and I like my Thief/TDM dark and contrasty.
What's the difference between the current shadows and soft shadows? Higher resolution, and smoother edges on soft shadows? Looks quite smoother on the pics, but, can't compare to how it is now.
In-game you can type "r_SoftShadowsRadius 0" in the console to compare (1 is default). They get softer the further from the lighsource they reach. Mostly, they just don't look like cut-outs anymore.
