Performance issues with 980 Ti

Hi guys,

 

I downloaded the latest version of the standalone mod last night and tried to run it at 2560 x 1440 with all settings at max, but couldn't hit 60fps even in the jumping / climbing section of the training mission.

 

I'm running 3770 + 980 Ti + 16GB.

 

This surprised me, as I thought the mod is built with Doom 3 engine which is 14 years old? I'm sure heavy modifications has been done, but still, it's strange and disappointing I couldn't run this mod at 60fps 1440p when I could run most of today's titles at such settings?

 

I have to tune down AA and anisotropic settings to get close to 60fps.

 

Any comments? Do I really need a 1080 Ti to run this mod smoothly???

AF 16x is non-relevant about the performance.

MSAA does.

 

DO NOT try maxed out Soft Shadows ;) (High is good enough and not performance killing)

I don't think I have soft shadow turned on at all.

 

Sorry, I know this contractions with that I said in my original post. I have post processing to max, but soft shadow as off.

Postprocessing is only a very light version of a bloom shader.

OK.

 

I tested stencil vs shadow maps in that area and stencil won big time ( 125FPS vs 60FPS).

 

The only way I got down to 30FPS or under was cranking AA.

 

This engine uses real MSAA, not post process AA like most modern engines.

 

If you set AA to 16x, your video card will be hurting.

 

I suggest you try disabling in-game AA, increasing resolution and used FXAA in your driver settings.

Or use hybrid AA like setting in-game AA to 8x and enabling transparency AA in your drivers.

 

Other than that?

 

You might be able to squeak a few FPS in by enabling Lightgem Interleave:

I could force AA through NVIDIA control panel but honestly, I'm running the game at 1440p on a 32" monitor and sitting 2 feet away, I can't see jagged edges anyway.

I think I need a monitor with higher refresh rate.

 

This may sound strange, but 60fps inside the training room FEELS smoother than 60fps outside (by that lamp post, for example). and on another completely different note, 60fps in same games (say Street Fighters IV, Darksiders Warmaster Edition) FEELS smoother than 60fps in TDM. I wonder if it's just my perception.

Force FXAA through the drivers or reShade if MSAA is too much ;)

Let the Anisotropic Filtering set to 16x.

 

If you use Shadow Maps, DO NOT get higher than "High" (maybe it's better to get rid of "Very High" for SM and reduce to Low/Medium/High the object LoD options too, with Low=old Medium, Medium=old High and High=old Very High).

 

And avoid FRAPS, is too much old now (MSI AfterBurner+RTSS is the way).

FPS is an average value. And so a liar :D

You can get a "nice" 60 FPS with horrible frametime spikes (stuttering) :P

 

The secret is to keep the frametime stable and low, not the FPS high.

It's why it's important to use AB+RTSS, you can see the frametime graph directly in-game.

I wonder why 16x AA or no AA at all.

Are 2x, 4x, 8x for losers only?

4x would be my choice :P

Or FXAA if there are no "wire"-like objects in the scene.

This may sound strange, but 60fps inside the training room FEELS smoother than 60fps outside (by that lamp post, for example). and on another completely different note, 60fps in same games (say Street Fighters IV, Darksiders Warmaster Edition) FEELS smoother than 60fps in TDM. I wonder if it's just my perception.

 

You just described frame pacing issues. It's either Opengl or TDM's engine or some combination, but frame pacing is an issue. I can get over 200 fps in game, but circle strafing around a pole feels like I have low FPS. Walking straight is very smooth, as well as stopping and just looking around.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

It's also visible when walking sideways, AFAIR it has something to do with weird tick rate set for the engine by id engine programmers, which doesn't go well with 60 Hz refresh rate. That is quite pronounced if you have Uncap FPS set to Off, so it's better to have it on.

Johnny takes one step per second. Every step would not look much different from one another so his motion is very smooth.

Amanda hops every other step. All the even steps take 1.5 seconds while all the odd steps take 0.5 seconds.
