Quantum Computing Again

I have to see this after looking at pathfinding algorithms for a while now...

This startup called D-Wave claims they'll have a prototype quantum computing device by 2006, for solving "optimizaton" problems like pathfinding (as well as quantum simulation problems).

Their qubits are relatively large scale loops of BCS superconductors (aluminum and niobium). Their devices are not intended for the "facotring big numbers" problem, but for setting up potentials and finding optimum paths, states of molecules with lots of electrons, etc.

Just thought that was interesting, and will be especially intersting if they can actually meet their 2006 deadline for a prototype.

So what does this mean for computing in general? When will we see comercial quantum computers make an appearence? Got any weblinks? sounds intriguing...

Oh yeah, forgot to link it. Oops. Their site is pretty vague, I saw it in a magazine article. They say they're taking advantage of how macroscopic BCS superconductor loops can exhibit quantum phenomenon.

Maybe it's similar to designs that use spin quantum number of a trapped electron as a qubit, but instead of electron spin it uses the direction of current flow in macroscopic superconducting rings? I'm not sure.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
