Fancy Some Free Mmo?

THen just go here and download the three files and you can play Lineage 2 for free.

It reminds me a lot of the old days in Everquest, which was the only MMO I ever played for a long period, so I'm enjoying it, and things just generally taste better when they're free :D

Anyway, if you fancy something for nothing, I'm on server 3 playing as a dark elf.

No. it's free. as in 'some guys have hacked the game code and set up their own servers'

Don't worry though, they've been going for a long time and have thousands of people on three severs, they're not just some warez kiddies.

THese are definitely the best and most stable free servers out there.

What the...?

I haven't followed Lineage, but I thought two things:

1. it looked like and played like Ultima Online (which is fine... but oh, so old), and

2. Lineage 2 isn't even out yet - still in development

Clearly after looking at screenshots, I'm wrong on both points?

Is this what the game really looks like? Holy cow. If the answer to that is a 'yes', I'm downloading!

Just bought it, its fine for dial up, its looks really frigging cool. Plus it was only 10 beans, not a bad price for so much entertainment. Plus all the elven chicks are size double c cups and up in the manual.

EDIT: FUCKING FUCK. I did not realize that there was a monthly fee for the goddamn game. Fuck.

Ok, anybody on the Dark Mod team, in the U.S. or Canada, who wants this fucking game Lineage II for free just let me know, Ill mail it to you gratis. Think of it as a small payback for all your hard work.

Fuck!

You can download and play it for free FFS, that's what this thread is about. Although, it's a 2 gig download - 3 hours or me, but if you're on dial up...

And yes, Sneaksie, it looks good for an online game, it even has soft edged realtime shadows.

Right, I should have added anyone who has dialup and doesnt want to spend the next week downloading can have my copy. Sneaksie, are you a dial-up gimp as well?

P.S. What does FFS stand for?

P.P.S. I just visited the Lineage2World site, am I to understand they run FREE SERVERS?!?

Im confused, I dont know much about the MMO's other than Team Fortress.

Welp, I'm at work, and at 88% of the big file downloaded already (steady 167kb/s). The smaller files are already done. :) Woot. One thing I'm concerned about: since this is a Richard Garriott game (I think?) then it's probably free-for-all - PvP against anyone at anytime, against your will, even. While I'm not a complete MMORPG wuss (EQ, AO, carebear games), that would sure piss me off if I gave a damn about my character and some leet-speak wanker smacked me down and took all my shit.:angry:

Yep, I'm on dialup at home. I simply refuse (so far!) to give comcast more money. They are raping everyone with their frigging monopoly, and I think I'm even going to drop my cable TV and go satellite - if not just bunny ears. I watch very little TV anyway - the only thing I like is History channel and an occasional Fox show like House, and the news when it's important.

That, and my dialup is free - local call to alma mater. Booyah.

Comcast, huh? Are you anywhere near Philadelphia perchance? Verizon DSL is finally coming down in $$$, its about 20 $ amonth for their slowest package which is still fine by me. I hope to have it up and running soon, Fortress Forever, the new HL2 mods answer to Team Fortress Classic, is coming out soon. Now thats something to woot about! :D

In this game you can kill other players, but you get bad karma and get branded as a griefer with your name in red, so anyone can kill you and loot your items without punishment, and you can't go near towns to buy stuff, etc.

There's not many of them hat 've seen. When you die, you only lose one random item anyway, and if you're lucky you'll be playing with a fried you'll pick it up before someone else does.

The only problem wth these games is that it's hard not to play them too much.

WTF, are these the *worst* installation instructions in history? I went through their FAQ steps of: install the client, install the textures, install our patch. First off, the instructions make it sound like their patch is a manual install, but it's actually an automatic .exe install. Then, it warns DO NOT LET IT UPDATE! and what does the game do as soon as you launch it? It updates, of course. It started trying to download some 150mb utx file before I killed it. Guess I'll just delete all this crap and start again, another 4Gb install.

No, when you install it, start the game from l2.exe in the installation directory's system folder, then it won't try to update.

WHe you register, you'll probably get an error about it couldn't send you the email, but dont' worry about that, it'll work anyway, you don't even have to reply to verify your address.

Okay, I went through and did the whole install again, but installed their patch by hand (first to a temp dir and then overwrite manually). This got me further, to a login screen. They should shoot the guy who wrote the FAQ though - all he had to say was what you did about l2.exe.

I didn't know I'd have to register (duh), so I'm off to try that next.

Edit: Cool, got in. Looks really nice (in a simplistic Unreal way). More developers should have probably been using Unreal for MMORPGs for a while already - the scale is perfect for a world arena. Anyway, now to find a manual. ^_^

I play on 2 now anyway. Server 3 is actually the test server, ad it's down a lot. Level 40 Orc Marauder now)

These private servers are actually better than the retail pay servers. The retail servers are just an endless level grind, whereas these private servers have accelerated xp and money accumulation, so you can get to tghe top faster with somew decent gear and take part in the PvP, guild raids and castle sieges.

  • 2 weeks later...

All MMOs are a grind, that is how the genre is defined. I thought World of Warcraft would be different, but only the first twenty levels were any fun for me, after level forty it became a long grind where you were essentially forced to find a group (and to find a good group was near impossible in the later levels, at least on Illidan). It would take 2 minutes to kill one enemy for the same experience it would to kill an enemy at level twenty (which would take 5 seconds at that time). It just got frustrating and I felt like I was doing nothing but watching my character attack and attack and attack. The quests got less creative as the game went on (Go kill 5 murlocs level 10, 20, 30, 40...), and the standard (Collect 5 turtle steaks for me), when they have a .01% drop rate. I even got a plugin that would tell me how much time I played (on that character, 180 hours), and divide it into the activities I was doing. 50% of the time was spent traveling, and frankly, after spending 90 hours nearly four strait days walking around the world in that game...hey I want those three days back! Ya, so you have to know what you are getting into with those games, and personally, I find them to get boring real quick when the leveling slows down <_<

That's right. All RPGs should take a note from the Legend of Zelda series, where the skill is all in the person playing, not some abstract numbers in the computer that go up depending on how many clicks you do. To me its the same kind of mindlessness that keeps old people gambling away at the casinos - every bit of offence intended.

Racking up stats like that should stay in the pen and paper RPGs, where it belongs. It was developed to simulate real time combat - you don't need to simulate real time combat in a fucking real-time environment.

WE're tlaking abiout MMORPGs here, not single player RPGs. The two things are completely different from a design point of view. The purpose of MMORPGs is to keep the player playing as long as possible so he keeps forking out his monthly fee.

Game developers seem to think the only way to keep players playing for a long time is to make it take a long time to get to the highest level. The reason they don't want everyone getting to the highest level quickly is because everyone then gets bored unless they constanty introduce endless new high end content and events.

Open bet fro Dark and Light will satrt next mothn. THat game looks interesing. It's claim to fame is the massive world, the biggest ever seen, with no loading zones, and only one server.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
