Doom The Movie

Anybody seen Doom the movie? I watched it and it was not as bad as I thought. Actually I enjoyed it quite a lot, even though I think it helps to be a fan of Doom. The movie itself was more made like Doom 3 than the classic Dooms, but there were moments that really reminded me of Doom I/II and also got me playing it again. :) Especilly that scene where 'The Rock' got the BFG 9000. :)

I also liked the short sequence of First Person Shooting, even though it is pretty weird in a movie. It felt like watching somebody playing Doom 3. My wife didn't like it as much, but she is no fan either.

Im actually willing to give a movie like Doom one shot, Im sure its pretty silly but I dont think it is trying to be anything else. Ill watch it once for the nostalgia.

talking about seeing video game perspectives in movies, what about Star Warts I, the Fan-base Menace? Towards the end of the movie there is an extended battle scene in a factory or something with characters jumping over and under crates. "Where have I seen this before?" I wondered. Ahhh, its a jumping puzzle from a video game! Talk about crossover and product placement....

So... pleasant up to a point?
You can get equal, if not more pleasure from watching good movies or eating decent meals, as a junk one, so why do it?

I can see why for food - junk food is more usuallyc onvenient better value, but the same can hardly be said for a bad movie Vs a good one.

What I missed was the scariness. In Doom 3 this was quite well done, but the movie was not really scary. There were some splatter effects but this is not what I consider scary. I prefere a good thriller any time. Apart from that there where the usual and quite expected startlement sequences, which seem to be used in the same fashion in each and every horror movie. It's so predictable and I still wonder why my wife still is always startled by them unless I tell her what will happen next.

Just an example of this: A heavily used pattern is that the tension is pumped up by the protagonist seeing something weird. The watcher should anticipate that NOW is the time the protagonist will get some bashing, but suddenly it turns out that he just jumped at shadows, or a friend played a prank on him. The watcher is relieved and exactly two or three seconds later the real monster appears and gets him.

Really, this pattern is used practically in EVERY horror movie I have seen so far.

Yeah. That demons-from-hell I was also missing. In the end the explanation given was not so bad, and it had the advantage to also explain why the main character can handle so many injuiries without going down immediately. :) But on the other hand, through the entire movie I was waiting when hell is discovered to be behind this, and of course it never happened. :)

Well, I feel that the only reason this film is made is to get money, not to because DooM had a good story(whatever you say, it didn't). If this was a movie after Heroes of Might and Magic, Heretic, The Elder Scrolls, etc., then I would give my money to see it. But a movie after a tremendosly(for some reason I can't understand) popular game will be trash.

Too late to save us but try to understand

The seas were empty -- there was hunger in the land

We let the madmen write the golden rules

We were just Children of the Moon

We're lost in the middle of a hopeless world

Children, Children of the Moon watch the world go by

Children, Children of the Moon are hiding from the Sun and the Sky

On the other hand, since I knew that Doom had no relevant story, I was not erally dissapointed and the movie fit pretty well in the Doom universe. When I watched Alone In The Dark, I was quite dissapointed. I expected a nice movie based on the Lovecraft universe and what I got was a VERY cheap horror movie with no relation to the game. Maybe this was a missunderstanding on my part, because of the name I thought it has something to do with the games. Actually I wonder why market law didn't prevent this, or the rights were sold without a second glance to what will happen to it.

The lack of the demonic angle is something that puts me off watching the film, because on some level I can't help thinking that the reason it was left out was to appeal more to the Fundamentalists.

However, given how much I disliked the Doom 3 version of "demons" (i.e. with Earth techology like rocket launchers - that is more like Quake in my book), perhaps they were better left out.

That applies to about 98.99 percent of the movies that make it to the big screen. Its a real shame that such a beautiful format for watching a film is usually used to display utter shit. Some of the bigger cities in the U.S. have theatres that show good film regularly but you have to live near one to enjoy them. When I lived in Orlando years ago, they had a cool theatre that was also a restaurant; dinner, drinks, and a decent film.

My local mom&pop video store has a deal for $2.50 tuesdays for new releases. So far I have not had a problem with any of my choices not being in stock.

Analysis -

Theatre: $20 for tickets (Janelle and I), other annoying humans, uncomfortable seats, Gas to get there, specific times, 30 minutes of adverts and previews.

Store: $2.50 for both of us, comfortable couch, good food from home, vidstore within walking distance, can watch whenever I want within 2 days, extra features if interested, skippable adverts and trailers.

Only advantage for theatre is huge screen and they get the shows 3 months earlier.

That advantage is cut down by the annoying ambience of the crinkling of dozens of popcorn bags, coughing of several individuals, creaking of seats, people rudely talking, beeping of cellphones, and the fact that they lowered the volume because the old farts don't like it too loud.

At least where I live :)

BTW sparhawk is it true that in German theatres they assign you to seats?

Not any longer. When I was younger you had a number on the card which tells where you can sit. But nowadays this is no longer. Maybe some theaters still have it, I don't know, because I haven't seen this in a long time.

But I always wondered about this ambient noise in US theaters. From ripped movies I noticed that apparently people run around a lot there. Here I barely can see and it wouldn't be acceptable either. Of course sometimes somebody goes to the toilet or such, but most of the time the theater is quiet and everybody stays on his place.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
