You all prolly know this anyways but MS are letting you download VC2005 express for free 12 month use.

I've installed it on my home computer and it's great.

:)

I'm glad to see that the DM is still going strong, love the new guards.

What is VC2005?

Too late to save us but try to understand

The seas were empty -- there was hunger in the land

We let the madmen write the golden rules

We were just Children of the Moon

We're lost in the middle of a hopeless world

Children, Children of the Moon watch the world go by

Children, Children of the Moon are hiding from the Sun and the Sky

It's a C++ compiler, a software development tool.

BTW, for some reason they (still) haven't enabled the Platform SDK wizards by default, so this little guide still applies:

I have a full version of Visual Studio C++ Professional that I bought with the initial desire of writing programs. I soon realised that I sucked at programming, and my expensive investment now sits in a box, uninstalled and gathering dust. :( Yet another one of my failed hobbies...

The licence for the express edition is normally restricted to private personal use only, you aren't allowed to publically release any software you create with it, though I don't know how MS would police that...

Does this mean they're planning to deactivate the beta version?

I have no idea. The download page for Beta 2 is gone though.

Thankfully that is not the case here:

4. Can I use Express Editions for commercial use?

Yes, there are no licensing restrictions for applications built using the Express Editions.

But like I said, the software is only free for one year.

As XP SP2 is a pre-requisit for installing VC2005, I had to fight with my computer and with google to get XP SP2 running on my AMD64 computer.

I would install SP2, reboot and the computer would not start up. Thankfully I found a website mentioning a patch which Mesh produced.

Which version exactly? What is included? There are more compiler environments called "Visual Studio Professional" in MS portfolio.

Version 6.0 if memory serves... I bought it in 1999, I think. It has several CDs with the MS VS IDE, compiler for C++, hundreds of examples, lots of utilities, a MSDN CD with loads of stuff... To be honest I haven't looked at it in a while, so I'm not that sure what I have. I'm am sure it is very out of date by now though...

Well, the beta version hasn't exactly been deactivated, but it "had an error" about the time the actual version was put up for download, and ever since then it's been giving the wrong line numbers when throwing up compile errors in the output, which makes it pretty hard to find the error and fix it. I don't know if this is MS' idea of a practical joke or what. <_<

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
