Ok cool thanks got it, and its pretty good heh - damn I cant wait to play this!

Seems how the link on the main news page doesn't work though , maybe it should be changed to the hi res version? that way the public viewers wont have to hunt around the forums like I did to find it hehe.

Anyhows , what's the round about percentage on the mod right now?

what's done / what's needed?

A percentage figure would be misleading. THink of it more like a ball rolling down a hill which gathers mass and speed over time.

For example, I'm currently figuring out the best way to implement our characters in Doom, this takes quite a lot of study and testing, but once I'm happy with the best workflow to use, the characters can all be done surprisingly quickly.

It does have a title, you just don't see it (for some reason) when you are transferred from our domain. The actual url of the site is www.mindplaces.com/darkmod/index.php, and if you go there directly you don't get that weird frame problem. So google will still register the site, just not necessarily the domain name.

I know why you're having the frame problem. Thedarkmod.com is configured to be a masked domain, so that the url will always be thedarkmod.com. A frame gets added so that the user thinks he/she is browsing thedarkmod.com, but in reality the content is loaded from elsewhere.

If you turn this off you will eliminate that problem. But the browser won't display thedarkmod.com as the domain anymore, but www.mindplaces.com/darkmod.

I suggest you remove the mask, and then transfer the domain elsewhere. GoDaddy.com is an excellent choice, as it's cheap and you get the possibility to actually configure the DNS. I don't know if whoever's running the webserver mindplaces.com is hosted on has access to add another vhost, but if that's possible you can get thedarkmod.com to actually be hosted on the webserver.

If that gets done, you might even use forum.thedarkmod.com as the forum domain instead of modetwo.net/darkmod.

Only problem with that is that I would have to pay another provider, as I already payed my in advance for a year. Well, it's not THAT much, but currently I'm not inclined to pay for another one just for a triviality.

I'll check that site and see how much it costs, though.

I checked that site, but somehow it is not clear to me what I really need. The transfer of the domain costs 7.95USD which would be acceptable, but somehow they seem to charge extra for some stuff which costs a monthly fee. Also it says that I have to wait 60 days before I can register a newly registered domain.

Even so, that title just says:

<title>darkmod.com</title>

which ( a ) is wrong and ( b ) will not exactly bring us many 'hits'.

Instead we could have something like:

<title>The Dark Mod - Doom 3 conversion inspired by Looking Glass's Thief series.</title>

:)

Hmm, that's odd...I remember changing that title. Maybe I forgot to save it or something. I'll fix it later.

That masking isn't usefull at all, I suggest you remove it and just have the domain to point to mindplaces.com/darkmod

What masking are you talking about? As far as I know, the domain DOES point there.

You see, whatever link you click on the website, the url in the browser address bar stays http://www.thedarkmod.com. When you e.g. click on the Screenshot link, the url should change to http://www.mindplaces.com/darkmod/screenshots.php - but it stays www.thedarkmod.com. This means that the domain is masked.

It's putting a frame around the website and loading content from mindplaces.com/darkmod.

Read more here.

It's no need to remove it, it's just a suggestion.

However, when you click on the Forum link on the website, you are sent to the forums, but the url is still http://www.thedarkmod.com. This might confuse users who want to copy thread url's to paste elsewhere etc.

I'd love to remove it, but that's Spar's domain, and he says it can't be changed.

I agree with mOdEtWo.

My registrars gives me a choice, and I prefer not to use masking.

As an example, check out:

http://www.rcl-software.org.uk/thief/

That takes you to:

http://www.rclsoftware.org.uk/thief/

(without the dash).

Makes bookmarking stuff much easier.

Unless we are planing to actually move the site to www.thedarkmod.com in the next few months.

Since this is going on in two threads at the moment, here's what Spar said:

The problem is that I host the domain at GMX which allows me to redirect it to another website, but I can't change how it does that. The advantage is that it is very cheap.  Don't know what it would cost with anothr provider, but this one costs 12 Euro per year.

and since he has already payed a year in advance, someone else would have to put up the money to change sites at this point. If any one wants to volunteer, let me know. :)

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
