Belcher Creature (wip)

I wanted to do something non-human so I found some meshes on-line & I'm modifying those according to the belcher concept art:

So far I chopped off the head of a dinosaur, made his body more rounded, and made the mouth:

No textures yet.

 

I did find a lot of WIP concepts & models in the forum. I felt it was a cheat to have oDD's t-rex (this isn't a dinosaur game after all & the mesh was too high poly for my taste) so I modified a suitable, low-poly mesh found here:

Weird, I was just thinking about Belchers last night and whether we'd be able to get them in. :)

 

Looks good so far. Don't worry about following the concept art exactly, as the biology is a little wacky. I like the basic shape you've come up with--feel free to make any modifications you think will make it look more believable, like thickening the tail to create a more effective counterbalance.

He looks very shiny and not at all threatening, but I'm guessing you knew that already. Keep it up. :)

I think it's the knobby eyes. Who can resist those?

 

Just in case: I think it's coming along nicely, ascottk! Can't wait to see it bulge it's throat bag whilst gulping up a giant burp!

The legs in the concept make no mechanical sense whatsoever and shouldn't be followed anyway.

I like the way it looks in action. I think the tail needs to be thickened or lengthened in order to balance him out though. Probably thickened is better for the sake of clipping. Are you thinking of a smooth and shiney salamandar-like skin or a rough and scaley dinosaur-like one?

I think the tail is going to look goofey if it's thicker. Besides, I think he's mostly gas in the torso :laugh:

 

I'm not too sure about the textures. Maybe we'll have different varieties. Smaller salamander-like ones found in swamps or something, & more dinosaur-like in caves.

Hmm, I'm still a little worried he's going to look completely off-balance, but I guess we'll see how it looks in game. :)

 

He certainly doesn't look too cute anymore, btw.

I haven't finished the textures yet but he's in-game with a few animations (idle, walk, run, belch, alert). Here's the belch animation:

I didn't realise how long the tail was judging from your previous screenshots... perspective problem?

 

The legs and arms look separate from the rest of the body, like they've been crafted separately and then glued on. Would be nice if they flowed into the body more seamlessly.

 

It does look like you're having fun, so keep at it! This guy is going to look pretty cool when he's finished. B)

Hey, that's looking great! :) We had originally envisioned a sack under the neck that inflates before they expel the Belch, kind of like how frogs or Louis Armstrong look when they inflate their faces. ;) Not sure how difficult something like that would be, but just wanted to throw it back out there. It was just a small detail to differentiate our guys from the originals.

Nice animation. But I honeslty think the tails is way to long and pointy. Maybe give it a more spikey tail and shorter instead?

 

well this animal hasn't got 4 legs like a stegosaurus to keep him in balance. I think because all the weight of his body is on the front it needs a long tail to keep him balanced if your going for realism. How many bones does the tail have? With 3 or 4 you could make a nice wave anim for the walk/run.

      I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
