Sound-Effects-Library.com

I was checking out Sound-effects-library.com where they sell individual sounds and noticed several ambient vocals that would be excellent for St. Lucia (crying babies, background voices, etc). The prices for individual sounds are reasonable and I'd be willing to pay for a few of them, but I'm not totally clear how the licensing works. Can anyone tell me whether this would be suitable for us? I can't figure out exactly what #6 means and whether it trumps #4.

1. The audio samples shall remain the property of Sound Effects Library Limited or its Library partners and are licensed, not sold to you for use on your audio equipment.

2. A right to use the audio samples is granted to the original purchaser (end-user) of the product (the Licensee) and is NOT transferable.

3. The Licensee may modify the audio samples. The audio samples may be used for commercial purposes within musical compositions or soundtracks subject to section 7 below.

4. This license expressly forbids resale or other distribution of these audio samples, either as they exist on this Web site, or any modification thereof. You cannot sell, loan, rent, lease, assign or transfer all or any of the audio samples to another user, or for use in any competitive product or competitive web site.

5. Licensor will not be responsible if the contents of these samples do not fit the particular purpose of the Licensee.

6. Provided the particular audio samples have been purchased from this Web site and from no other source, use of the audio samples in isolation such as in video game soundtracks or web sites or library music clips (where they appear in isolation or as stand-alone sound effects) is permitted subject to clauses 1 to 5 above.

Hmm. Yes, it's not entirely clear. Best to ask them before spending any money.

So no-one we give the sample to may use them, e.g. not even listen to them? That sounds stupid. (The end-users of the Dark Mod are not licensees of the audio samples)

Other points contradict that though...

Here's a list off the top of my head:

1. An explosive screeching of rats

2. Various ambient city sounds, like

a. murmered conversation (looped)

b. distant coughing (heavy, hacking coughs)

c. babies crying

d. shouting

e. distant coach wheels/horseshoes on cobblestones

3. Creaking sign swaying in the wind

4. window shutters banging in the wind

5. fluttering of several moths around a light

  • 4 weeks later...

I've gotten ahold of a few audio clips that might be useful for the city section of st-lucia...ambient bar noises, distant horse and cart sounds, etc. But I think the files need some trimming and cleaning up, which is outside my skillset. Any sound people available and interested?

I could do that, but I won't be back home till Sunday.

Ok, I've uploaded them to the audio/temp folder on the ftp. I included a couple rat sounds I found that might be useful for that 'explosive shrieking'. Don't know how good any of them are but they might be better than nothing.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
