My map progress

Hey Dark Mod team, just giving you a look at some of my level coming together. I'm still trying to get beta mapper status because I'm in dire need of textures and props. Also is it normal for you guys to get "lag" in the editor? My map is starting to get pretty large.

Last but not least, any of you seen New Horizon around? I've sent a pm and some mail to dark mod but haven't received a response in 2 or 3 days. Anyway it's hard to really see the whole map from one pic. So far I only applied bare minimum textures to just get a "feel", so its not official and need at least 2 more sections of brushwork done before I can even start detail, AI, and constructing the mission.

Very promising. Hard to tell from the editor shot but the front looks good. Be nice to see in-game shots when fully textured and lit. Hope to see more of this as you progress it. NH is taking time out BTW. Keep posting as we'd like to see more of this.

Yeah lag is pretty common when maps get huge. Wait till you start dmapping them

Looking very nice.

Looks nice, but as Fidcal said, would want to see it in game textured and lit.

Just some general tips:

* You can use the SL assets to develop your mission, that should give you much more things to play with. The rest of the mod isn't that much more (its hard to say how much, but we included quite a lot of things in SL :)

* I'd advise you to stop adding to the map and try to get it into thegame ASAP. Otherwise, you will run into a lot of problems that might need a complete redesign of some parts and you will waste a lot of time, possible burning you out. And we don't want that :)

Especially important are textures and lights, to get a feel, as well as visportals (otherwise the performance will be bad).

Here is some info:

http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/Visportals (the article is a bit lenghty and could use a cutting down and a few images, tho, but it explains everything)

if you map is not designed with them in mind, you might run into trouble properly sep parts of your map.

Hope that helps and we see your map soon :)

Does it totally crash you to the desktop?

Or does it hang in the console and spits errors at you?

Help us, help you :D

Maybe you might try deleting half the map, saving under a new name, then try compiling that half. Then the other half.

Too bad you didn't constantly compile and test it all along the way, then you would know at what point it stopped working and you would know what you recently did to break it. But now it could be anything!

I'll try that if all else fails, hopefully its just a bad entity or something. Lets hope its not worst case because this is my first real map ever for any mod and it would shatter my soul to have to redo all that work. :(

I saw Greebo on another thread fix a crash error by debugging. Maybe he knows how?

This is really something mappers need to get in the habit of, fast.

I can have a look at the map if you upload it somewhere.

As for the DarkRadiant lag: as you're using three orthoviews this is most likely due to a setting in the preferences: Go to Edit > Preferences, select Settings > Orthoview and then uncheck "Update Views on Camera Movement".

That's why I said save with a new name. I'm not suggesting you lose any work. Just TEST deleting half the map. Then if that half works you know the problem is in the other half, and you still have the full version.

Ok guys, I fixed the problem myself by restoring and reinstalling dark mod. I have one question though, I put St. Lucia's textures and models into Thieves Den so I could access the content but somehow I think it corrupted my skybox. I have the thieves den skybox pasted into my map but when the map is loaded the skybox is black and flickers. The outside box is chalked and the inner box is skybox texture(pointer). Did replacing files corrupt the skybox? Or is there another possible cause for a black skybox? An extra note is when I place ambient light it does show blue ambience like when the skybox was working. Any hints?

Well, it's generally not a good idea to just copy the Saintlucia contents over Thief's Den, and it's actually not necessary either. Saintlucia is including all the stuff from Thief's Den out of the box.

We're working on a "Getting started mapping with Saintlucia assets" tutorial right now, expect it to be published on the wiki soon.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
