New Mechwarrior game in the works

The license to the Mechwarrior game has been purchased by Pirhana Studios and their working on a new Mechwarrior game. It's a reboot of the franchise, meaning it's basically a new story that can draw in a new audience. But I hope they go back to their roots this time with the complexity of MW 2 which 3 and 4 under development of Microsoft was ruined imo. Hopefully with the competition of Mechwarrior Living Legends, (the indi mod developed for the Crysis engine,) certain key gameplay aspects will be adopted as MW:LL is likely to be more MW1, and 2 oriented judging from what I've read in terms of gameplay. There seems to be a lot of really interesting features in development though, such as the 4 player Co-op which I think if executed properly could be a ton of fun. However they want to develop it for both the 360 and PC which begs the question, "How the f@#$ are you going to fit all those classic controls onto a controller?"

 

 

I played Mechwarrior 2 around the same time of Thief 1, HL1 and doom 1 + 2 way back when, so with a new MW, a MW mod, TDM, Thief 4 and doom4 coming out in the next couple years, I feel like I'm 10 again :D Maybe even HL2:Ep3 will come out and surprise me as well ;)

~Personally I think MW always ruins their cinematic with poor voice acting :P

Piranha Bytes doing it? That sounds good. :D

 

What I really would love to see is also a good strategic game based on mechwarrior. To carry over the feeling when you play the tabletop. I somehow miss that. I would like this much more than an action shooter.

I'd want another Mech 2 Mercenaries -- had a lot of fun with basic randomly generated instant action scenarios (more than for example Mech 3 which I can't really bring myself to play, still). One thing I hope they'd be able to overcome is the problem where gameplay basically comes down to who has stronger weapons or more armor. Basically you're two (or more) hulking tanks SLAMMING weapon fire into each other, nonstop, no missing, no dodging or evading, just slam slam slam slam who falls first. YAWN. The title I mention, way back, didn't so much suffer from that. You could take out a Warhawk with just an armored suit, because while one hit against you would take you out, you had such great maneuverability that you could dodge and weave and avoid being hit if you were skilled and fortunate. That was a blast. Admittedly, perhaps you could do that in later titles too, but I never got over the interest vs. overwhelm ratio enough to care to find out.

i never heard of it either but its a new company started by one of the co-founders of fasa who was working for micro$oft till they closed down fasa studios, some how, some way he got the IP's!

#2 its "Piranha studio" ( or software or development or something techie like that ) NOT "Piranha Bytes". i thought so too at first but different company ....

 

( p.s. in some interview they stated it will not be whoever can alpha strike the best who wins but tactics and cooperation between the different mech classes, and it takes place in 3015 so none of the clan shit. )

That's exactly the opinion I ended up with too.

 

When it comes down to it, Mechs are just very awkward tanks! There's not a lot of gameplay opportunity there...

Thats part of the reason why i always hoped for a cool infantry based game from the same universe where sneaking around was essential to survival.

 

Heres an interesting mod for Crysis some might like. Just ran across this yesterday.

Depends... I wasn't much from MW 3 and 4 but in 2 which I played to death a lot of times it was easier to be a kitfox or something small with jump jets and a huge load of lasers and do attack retreat tactics.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
