  1. The "OpenTechEngine" team added "Crazy Eddie's GUI" ( CEGUI ) to replace the Flash based GUI of Doom 3 BFG: https://github.com/OpenTechEngine/OpenTechBFG/tree/master/neo/cegui http://cegui.org.uk/ If we were to embark on something like this, we would need to have it available in parallel to the existing GUI system until GUI files can be ported or the syntax of the Doom 3 GUI can be reconciled to that of the CEGUI system (alias tokens, etc). @stgatilov has already dabbled in improving the GUI code but I doubt he would be enthusiastic about this option.

  2. Just skimming through the topic here so I may miss some of the nuances of the conversation. I've been part of the Thief community since 1999. From the very beginning, mappers have made use of existing assets and often modified them...for better or worse...for use in their own missions. Generally, most asked permission and mentioned original authors in their credits. I've seen horrific modifications made, but those modifications have no bearing on the original assets...whether they were core mod assets or borrowed from an FM, the original versions do not magically get overwritten if someone butchers them for an FM. If a modified asset looks bad, most people playing it are just going to assume the FM author made it...I don't think it will reflect badly on the original artist. Having contributed work to the mod over the years in art, audio and code, the idea of preventing the sharing of assets makes me uncomfortable. It's counter to how we built and promote the mod. The Thief community has always shared. That's why it's miraculously still alive today. TDM is a cousin to the Thief community, we're smaller and I would say a tad more fragile. I would not be in support of doing anything that might create hurdles that weaken it.

  3. I get the sentiment here, I really do. However, if someone wants to take models (my own included) and change them for better or for worse - I consider that their problem and not mine. Thats just the nature of contributing to a free mod. We're not going to boot model exporting.

  4. Sorry, false alarm. Problem (1) was due to an AI renaming I did a while ago breaking the script. I only noticed the effect of the breakage coincident with the 2.08 -> 2.09 upgrade. Likewise, I have a hypothesis of what caused problem (2) and have applied a fix to prevent recurrence.

  5. @stgatilov Yes the crash dump was taken as TheDarkModx64.exe was hung up. I did it as the tutorial suggested and did not close it before exporting the dump. I had tried to open the executable a few times before however if that matters. "r_useFenceSync 0" - No change "com_smp 0" - No Change To confirm, 2.09 TheDarkModx64.exe does not work, TheDarkMod.exe that you linked to does work. EDIT: While the executable runs and I can get to the main menu, trying to download a mission causes the program to crash to desktop. Also tying to play a mission leaves me hanging at the loading screen at which point Windows says its not responding. @nbohr1more com_forceGenericSIMD SSE3 doesn't seem to be in my config file. Adding it in had no effect. Also thanks for all your efforts. I grew up loving Thief and it is so awesome that I get to continue enjoying that experience through the efforts of dedicated folks like yourself.

  6. Loosely following the discussions on Discord, I think I know where this topic is coming from. The conclusion to solve the past problems by removing the model export functionality from DR is wrong on so many levels, my answer just has to be nope. Besides the technical discussions, I personally find the thought of artists being that retentive about their work a bit strange, at least in the context of this community. If all the folks contributing to the mod had thought this way, there simply wouldn't have been a The Dark Mod at all.

  9. Decided to start dedicated thread about this problem. Right now at least @Jedi_Wannabe and @id3839315 have it. Let's continue the discussion here.

  10. Hi all, As the title suggests, I cannot run the dark mod. After installing, I run the 64 bit exe (there is no 32 bit exe) and the game freezes just after the cursor appears. Windows 10 then says the program is not responding. Have tried looking around the forums and changed various cfg values and tried using compatibility settings to no avail. My machine is a Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop with the standard Intel HD onboard graphics card and 4gb ram. I have tried updating and reinstalling to no success. Any thoughts? I have pretty standard hardware and can't understand the issue.

  11. Being able to pack licensed assets in the FM is the main one for me. Ideally it could be done without restricting mappers’ access to the rest of the archive by having locked archives within the unlocked FM archive, otherwise the rather cumbersome approach with separately uploading archives would have to be used. In any case, that should be an enrichment for TDM and benefit all mappers. I’m not enthusiastic about the prospect of homegrown files being prohibited from being modified or opened, because an important part of mapping is modifying assets to fit the FM and inspecting other people’s work. But fair enough if that’s what it takes. I must say I hope it doesn’t become a wider trend. The author’s not been seen in over 2 years and you've written that you thought it might be as good as finished, so it’s not unreasonable for someone unfamiliar with the creative process to conclude that it might as well be released as it is rather than never. It’s wrong, of course, but most likely not with ill intent.

  13. I see, I did almost ask if there was some forum event that happened in the past. Considering there will be a vocal minority to defend almost anything, it doesn't particularly surprise me. I would imagine a majority of TDM players don't visit the forums, though. Btw, it wasn't Bikerdude was it? I've only recently started following this forum with any regularity, so I'm not very familiar with most anything, but I do remember reading old threads about drama of years past. As for the unreleased mission bit, I did notice the posts in the beta testing forum. Could be just a bored player, without any malicious intent, albeit not exactly tactful. A leeching mapper is another story, but there seems to be a precedent for shutting that down at least.

  14. My opinion peter_spy, as a modeler in some extent my self, i do comprehend your feeling, I really do, modeling of your caliber, is a big amount of work but I also agree with the others, this is not the type of direction that a open source tool, open community should follow, if you really care about who uses your models, than I can only say, don't make models for TDM period or spend less time and effort on them, even if that means TDM losing a source of high quality models. There's nothing you can do about leaches trying to use your work, someone somewhere will just find a way to rip your models, even if you lock them, if you let that affect you, you will never be able to work in a open environment and get yourself a ulcera.

  18. I mean this thing I'm not entirely sure what's in the future plans for the inventory grid, but I really like how it makes selecting objects much much easier compared to using keys. My idea is that it can be made even more useful by adding some extra mouse functions, so it can potentially become the main way of managing items over keyboard commands. Currently the only function is: Left mouse click - selects an item and close inventory window I suggest the following: Right mouse click - uses an item and closes inventory window (i.e, a readable or a potion, eliminating the need for the U key afterwards) Left mouse click and drag - closes inventory window and automatically puts item in frob mode, if possible (makes dropping items easy, replaces R key) Note that I think we should still keep R, U and all other inventory associated keys, but this would provide a full GUI-based alternative to them.

  19. By the way, you can in principle play version 2.08 for now: most of FMs should work fine in it. Perhaps having two installations would be more convenient in this case (just be sure to not confuse one for another). I'm afraid the best idea I have is to send you bisecting over development versions (just like in the other thread nearby). When you check "Get Custom Version" in tdm_installer, you will see a lot of versions, and you can install any of them. I'm interested in the versions under folder dev/2.09 (like dev16010-8948): they are listed in order of increasing age. Normally, they should work fine up to some point, and then fail after that point. Could you please find the first one which fails for you?

  20. Ugh, no. DarkRadiant is a mapping tool, not a DRM enforcement system. Disabling or removing features because someone, somewhere might use them to violate someone's copyright is the sort of rubbish we saw when the late-twentieth-century RIAA and MPAA wanted to ban MP3 players and CD writers because people might use them to copy commercial music. Then those models are not compatible with the CC license used by the Dark Mod can cannot be used as part of the mod, full stop. Our CC license requires sharing alike and restricts commercial use, but no more. There are no restrictions on formats or storage mechanisms, and any license which imposed such additional restrictions would be CC-incompatible and therefore unlawful to distribute as part of a CC-licensed work. You seem to be under the misconception that there is something magic about the ASE format which means it can't be loaded into anything else. This is incorrect. It is a text format like any other, and it is easy to write an import script for it just as you can write an import script for OBJ, LWO or any other format. There is even an ASE import script for Blender 2.49, which according to your interpretation would make it impossible to follow the license of certain models until Blender is deleted from the internet. If a license is interpreted such that following the license is only possible as long as some other piece of software does not exist, there is something very broken about that license and I would suggest not touching any assets which use such a license.

  22. No, it's definitely ready to go in at least as an additional layout option. I'll create a suitable bugtracker ticket. Of course we'll want to be sure that it works well on a range of systems before using it as the basis for all the existing layouts, but it's looking promising so far (I withdraw my comment that it is "useless", but I still feel it is somewhat confusing and could be made more robust).

  23. That would probably require a lot of effort to integrate, but if GUIs are such nightmare to work with, maybe they could be replaced with a different, more friendly system: https://github.com/mikke89/RmlUi This would be similar to web development then.

  24. This is almost 2.08, so it is not suitable for playing. I'll create new version now.

  25. So what now? How does this build differ from release? And is it stable enough to play missions? Moreover and perhaps more importantly, is it SAFE to continue building my map with ?

  26. You can download 32-bit executable of 2.09 from the Downloads page on website. Oh crap, for some reason it is not there! We'll add the link to archive. Meanwhile, you can download 32-bit executables here: http://update.thedarkmod.com/zipsync/_aux/209/tdm_exe32.zip Could you please confirm that "TheDarkModx64.exe" does not work for you in 2.09, but "TheDarkMod.exe" from the archive does work for you in 2.09? Also, could you please go to properties of "TheDarkModx64.exe" and post a screenshot showing the exact size of it (up to the last byte).

  28. @johlkien, are you sure the dump was taken after TDM hanged up, and not before that? In the crashdump, all threads are waiting. Basically, this is a deadlock. Frontend thread is waiting for "signalFrontendThread", which is I guess when backend would finish. Main/backend thread is waiting for GL fence lock: ntdll.dll!00007ffea48bce14() Unknown KERNELBASE.dll!00007ffea2011e93() Unknown ig7icd64.dll!00007ffe5a9c5f8b() Unknown ig7icd64.dll!00007ffe5a5b65ad() Unknown > [Inline Frame] TheDarkModx64.exe!WaitForGeoBufferSet(int) Line 119 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!idVertexCache::EndFrame() Line 333 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!idRenderSystemLocal::EndFrame(int * frontEndMsec, int * backEndMsec) Line 689 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!idSessionLocal::UpdateScreen(bool outOfSequence) Line 2760 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!idCommonLocal::Frame() Line 2550 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!WinMain(HINSTANCE__ * hInstance, HINSTANCE__ * hPrevInstance, char * lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow) Line 1321 C++ [Inline Frame] TheDarkModx64.exe!invoke_main() Line 102 C++ TheDarkModx64.exe!__scrt_common_main_seh() Line 288 C++ @johlkien, could you please try starting TheDarkMod two times: With "r_useFenceSync 0". With "com_smp 0". Since you cannot set cvar in console, you need to open "darkmod.cfg", find corresponding cvar there, and change its value.

  30. Hi, Thanks for the quick responses everyone. To answer it all in one, yes its Windows 10 64 bit on a Lenovo Yoga 2 (model 20322). The only change I've made is putting in an SSD. I will try to downgrade to 2.08 and see if that works and report back. Also just as an FYI, Google Chrome views the installer as a malicious download (as does Windows Defender) and so I need to force permission to download (via right-click save as) and also to run the installer as an unverified app. In the meantime here is the log dump in case it helps for others: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13n9AC0n-yMiWfSl6FuuVrolOH4r1sA1b/view?usp=sharing
