  1. congrats to the winner Wellingtoncrab. I know you'd been working away at Iris for quite some time and i'm glad it got some elevated recognition on release. I really think it's one of the best missions i've played across TDM and Thief, likely even just stealth games in general. Thanks to the efforts of all the authors and community as a whole for this contest. I enjoyed my time start to finish with all entrants and am really excited with how much the bar has already risen going into 2.10. I love TDM so much.

  2. OK I figured out the problem. I found the commit which broke it, and looking at the diff I had the 'model' property set on a brush which obviously shouldn't have been there: // entity 0 { "classname" "worldspawn" "model" "models/map_specific/scaled/square_base_stone01_scaled1.ase" // primitive 0

  3. This solution should be posted under https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=FAQ#Performance_Issues as the one performance solution to rule them all. How to fix performance issues? Just upgrade your pc! It's the best and easiest solution!!! Only cost money, no pain.

  4. The mission "No Honor Among Thieves" has a camera flying through the level intro that can act like a benchmark

  5. So you upgraded your pc and improved performance? Sounds like a revelation. I was planning to go from intel i5 (2013) to Ryzen somewhere in the next years. Not sure if that's still a good idea..

  7. Story: Thanks: Thanks to my beta testers datiswous, Cambridge Spy, Aluminum Haste, Acolyte Six, madtaffer, wesp5, SuaveSteve and prjames. Additional thanks to Dragofer and Bikerdude who helped with scripting and assets. Download: Gallery: Thank you for playing! What did you think of the mission? I look forward to your honest feedback! Hints, Tips, Walkthroughs, Spoilers(!): - This mission will greatly reward those taffers who like to explore a mission thoroughly. It is possible to go directly for your objectives, but you will be missing a lot of content. - Many windows are openable, leading to new areas or private residences. - If an area seems hard to navigate due to patrols, chances are you can circumvent it. - Those who like a challenge and some extra replay value owe it to themselves to visit the apartment high above the tunnel entrance at Cobb St. (above the last pic in the gallery) FAQ: Disclaimers, Player Information.

  8. "Upgraded" my Ryzen 5800X (amazing processor) to an Intel i7 12700K, I get almost double the FPS in heavy missions. Written in stone, the starting view was at around 80-85fps with my settings, and with the new cpu it's at 135fps. Pretty amazing increase that I really didn't expect. And all it costs is a new motherboard, cpu, ram........I think I have a problem

  9. I believe that is Lords and Legacy, it was an optional objective to find his identity

  11. Scroll of Remembrance Written in Stone IMHO the former is sheer draw call abuse while the latter is more than that - many moving entities, etc I never looked at Scroll of Remembrance before, but yeah, the lack of optimization effort is obvious

  12. You blew me away with this Wellingtoncrab! The whole mission is a work of art!! I've completed it but am going back in for a more leisurely nosy around, and to breathe in that almost magical atmosphere once more.. I swear I could almost smell the damp, cool night air therein! There is an absolutely astounding level of 'attention to detail' in every square metre of this beautiful level - and it is so huge!!! If I had to score it out of a measily 10, it would blow right through its skull and into infinity!! A massive thankyou to you, and all your contributors for your excellence, rare talent and generosity!!

  13. Also opening scenes? AFAIR Briarwood Manor was classic case of triangle count excess Written in Stone is not - it's doing a lot of everything, not just iterating over one huge triangle list

  14. "Written in Stone" is not the heaviest mission for CPU's. Try "Scroll of Remembrance" if you want to make a CPU scream in pain. Even "Briarwood Manor" outdoor area is heavier than "Written in Stone" .

  15. Written in Stone opening scene is the ultimate CPU benchmark indeed It's a glaring example of map designed specifically for high-end PCs

  16. Yes, resumable downloads are not implemented yet. The main problem is that if you kill tdm_installer with task manager, you will have corrupted data on disk. Trying to use this data on future run will cause unavoidable errors. Aside from that, I'm not sure these __download__XXX.pk4 files are valid zip archives when they are saved, which means that some more code has to be added to support loading them. And yes, leaving all these weird files after cancelled installation might confuse user too. I think the main problem here is that tdm_installer fails after downloading data. Normally, this should not happen unless mirrors are screwed, or you have software/hardware problems. And I think it happened very rarely in the past, but there were several reports of such errors lately. I could not reproduce the error, and thus far nobody has even shared a log file of such an error.

  17. I don't mean to suggest it's definitely not worth the effort. Just trying to get an idea of how often data corruption does happen. It seems like the kind of thing you could have a checksum to verify. If any individual file fails its checksum, delete only it and try downloading it from another mirror. This would be better than assuming the whole download is kaput and starting from scratch. I guess as TDM gets bigger the odds of something going wrong increase but it's likely to affect mostly new users because those of us who've already been playing will usually only be updating an existing install rather than downloading an entirely new one.

  18. TDM can be a bit finicky about jumping off objects with sloping edges anyway. If the lip of the object slopes off downwards sometimes you just can't jump even though you hit the key in time. It can be frustrating.

  19. I save before a jump. Because I'm very bad at it. So when I die I can reload exactly where the jump is. Also, I'm not the best at rope arrow placement. It's much better to save/reload repetitively until you get the arrow where you need it, than to reload back to a save room and find your way to that spot. It would get very annoying very fast and I would probably stop playing the game. That's assuming the save room is exclusive, there is no manual autosave, and no save slot offered. I'm reminded of Far Cry: Blood Dragon, where you have to play through a lengthy opening sequence completely before being allowed to save. I love Far Cry and Blood Dragon was fun in its own way, but I've never played it a second time because of that opening act. Venting over (that felt good)

  21. If it adds more time to development it's not worth it IMO. Time could be better spent elsewhere, like in the amazing work with 2.10 and textures/images/etc that I've been seeing in recent missions.

  22. Timedemo has been broken in TDM since 1.04 I think.

  23. the witcher in unreal 5 well i foresee a lot of sad faces with current gfx card prices unless they tone down down the detail this engine is capable of massively. it will be pretty but as the world is atm. it might be a bad idea.
