  1. Otherside Entertainment (a new gaming company featuring some looking glass studio members) just announce on their kick starter for their new Ultima game that Stephen Russell has signed on for voice acting!!! How awesome :)

This is a discussion for a forum topic, but...

      1) Whatever Underworld ends up as, it will be a B title, not an AAA one.

      2) Assume a generous 1.5 year dev cycle for both games plus half a year of preparations for the next KS. That's 3.5 years before it even becomes a possibility.

      3) Thief just had a 100-million-dollars AAA game. It's unlikely anybody could pay for the license.

      4) Modern engines have real problems with editing. TDM still does...

    3. Melan

      Melan

      ...BSP, which is more newbie-friendly.

      5) We should instead convince the Otherside people to *join usssss now* and make a new Thiefy game with TDM as a base. ;)

The actual loading times are really fast even on my ye olde HDD (5 - 15 seconds). I could imagine them being a breeze on an SSD.

unless loading is tied to framerate ala... consoles

I'm having a blast playing Thief... I'm suffering from sleep-deprivation, haha!

@lost_soul but they tried that already with Windows 8 and I don't think it turned out the best. I think its good to keep the desktop and tablet world separate. Just detect when a keyboard and mouse are plugged in and use normal desktop mode and if a touch screen is detected boot into the touch interface. That way everyone's happy

    3. Goldwell

      Goldwell

And of course having the option to switch between the two regardless of which peripherals are available shouldn't be too hard either. Regardless it shall be interesting to see what Microsoft turn out with the final build

  4. So apparently the new Thief has "context-sensitive controls that mean you can only jump when the game says you can jump." what the hell?!

Im hoping that this is for consoles only since the demo at E3 was played on PS4.

But then again, i could always be wrong.

If the players are jumping too much, put down more metal and marble floors. Anyway, fuck this new breed of casualized game designers.

    4. ungoliant

      ungoliant

if its broke already it cannot be fixed. imagine trying to implement jumping with mantling in ocarina of time halfway through dev. absolutely impossible without complete level redesign. this is not going away.

"the illusion only really works when you keep looking the same way, lighting is baked in, so is specular and everything else. the texture also is not "calculated" on the opposite side, it is just projected through the mesh."

    3. Obsttorte

      Obsttorte

It's illusional that one day we'll be able to create 3D models out of 2D photographies with a certain quality. The terms already says it, 3D -Y 2D == information lost. The only way such things could work would be to have a camera that stores depth informations in the picture combined with a tools that allows you to get the specific location of the camera. Several shots from different sides, and voila.

Everything else are just dirty hacks which will always have their nitpicks.

Four hours it's a decent time... For texturing a model, or making a decent material :)

    3. demagogue

      demagogue

Haha, actually I think it was 45 minutes. It's the opening room to the Chain Project for T2 if you want to see it. A bare small room with a locked door, table and plant, and an AI that immediately attacks. You kill him and the door opens. 4 hours is a bit more rational. How could you check anyway? Dromed saves the age of a map. I guess make a branch save when you start and then check the time stamp with the final save.

    4. stumpy

      stumpy

no map size limit, 2 days, or 48 hours. And map to have at least 1/2 hour play time.

  8. so I guess Thief (2014) is effectively dead now. EM has no DLC planned, obviously no mod tools so its all over for that ride it seems. http://i.imgur.com/K8cL3Fz.jpg

Excellent sound and body to the vocals. Much more than before. Really looking forward to the ingame audio clips and we still need a "puff" screen to keep the mic from booming.

  11. So I found out a very cool piece of news today. My WIP is going to have a small voice acting cameo from an industry veteran. He has worked with Bethesda, Blizzard, Konami and he was even in Doom 3. But more on that later! ;)

  12. It's interesting watching how your FM develops over time. At first I had this really simple idea of just a house & then I started adding on other ideas. Now I have an entire city mapped out, and when you start building it branches off even further, it feels like you are able to take your imagination and translate it into a 3D explorable world. Very cool! Mapping is so much fun :)

It's funny, I've actually expanded my FM quite a lot because I felt the plot would be too rushed if I didn't. So it goes both ways :-). I definitely agree w/ bringing at least one section to completion. I've been making my FM scene-by-scene, and I started out by taking one small starting section and buffing it to a polished shine (w/ Biker's help).

Yes, and you won't end up with a list of games you bought but never had time to play. It's around 90% the case I think for me, haha :D

I don't think there was any rain. Which is odd a little? The most prominent thing that comes to my mind is the first level of Thief 2X but that is a different game.

Daniel Vávra, ladies gentlemen. There are still cool people in game development.

Also, Czech beer has a very high probability of being very, very good.

  17. Wolfenstein surprisingly has a few similarities to Thief. Most buildings having multiple entrance points, there are places to crawl and climb to sneak around, readables, guard patrols you can sneak around and pick off and secrets to discover everywhere. Very good ambient music and graphics as well. It feels a bit like a FPS MGS at times

There is not that much censoring. The swastika is gone and the enemies are not called nazis. This won't change the experience much. Although I agree that I hate the way we are getting infantilized in germany. It's for adults only anyway, so what.

    3. Baal

      Baal

It doesn't change the gameplay at all but I still hate these kinds of changes on principle. But the bigger problem is that we also only get the german voice overs and these are nearly always terrible.

    4. Lux

      Lux

Playing this now. Had to turn off SBX surround and use stereo so the game audio wasn't screwed up. Apparently doesn't detect 5.1? Also, no warning to finish obj prior to leaving when you know you'll be back to the area. Bummer. Has issues if you knew about in advance would be better. Game is ok. Good shooter wise.

  18. As I have been getting a few requests for vocals recently I just wanted to inform everyone that I am no longer doing vocals for any project regardless of whether it's related to thief/tdm. I plan on fulfilling my old agreements but after they're done then that's it from me.

In lue of young GW stepping away from VA, and as I have a good mic and some semblence of acting skill (not as good as GW) I am happy to try and step in if my voice is suitable that is.

Ive been watching this project for a while.. The graphic is of course lower than Skyrim, but the game is looking fine..

    3. Goldwell

      Goldwell

I disagree about the graphics being bad, I have seen them first hand running 60 fps on ultra settings and holy hell are they amazing! Especially for an MMO.

I guess MMO's aren't for everyone but I do enjoy playing them casually, big fun worlds to explore with many people sounds fun to me

@Lux yeah that problem will be solved when the final version is recorded (I use a better mic+pop filter) :D

    3. Sotha

      Sotha

Sounds like Rumplestiltskin from the tv series "once upon a time." Pretty cool, but my problem was it was difficult to understand what he is saying, so if he gives an objective to the player, maybe the speech need to be clarified a bit?

    4. Goldwell

      Goldwell

@Sotha yeah I will write the script a bit better I just had this idea for a character and decided to record something on the spot so I made up that "script" as I went along haha but it played out well. After you meet this person an optional objective will be added for the player as well

This is cool and all but I wish Gecko would've worked with the Canon Texture folks at TTLG rather than doing his own project. He's completely changed the look of some of the textures. I guess it's author's prerogative but when you market yourself as the "official" HD mod it's kinda shady, especially since there was already HD-ification happening elsewhere...

    3. SeriousToni

      SeriousToni

Thank you Goldwell! @nbohr1more: Which do you mean? Those? They really look nice and I hope he can help these guys out now after 1.0 release! http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140187&page=58

      fllood

Agree with nbohr1more. These textures imo are too far from the look & feel of the original game. I switched back from "HD" beta to original textures.
