  1. I did look into remapping keys, but I couldn't get it working. I even went so far as attempting to change the scanmode, and again no luck. It might be errors on my part, but I doubt it.

so, I know this isn't an ideal solution, but the arrow keys do work properly when you run Doom 3 with Wine. I tested this and while loading times are a little slower, performance is practically identical to the native install.

At any rate, the issue is definitely with the linux version of Doom 3. So, install Doom 3 manually (wine setup.exe crashes) as follows:

    $ mkdir ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/

I have the 3CD version, so if you have a DVD version modify accordingly. Mount CD1 and copy the necessary files (for my setup, CD drive is mounted as /media/cdrom, so modify to suit your setup):

    $ cp -a /media/cdrom/Setup/Data/* ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/

Mount CD2 and CD3 and copy files:

    cp -a /media/cdrom/Setup/Data/base/* ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/base

Download the Windows 1.3.1 patch (get the correct version from Dark Mod wiki) and install it:

    wine DOOM3-1.3.1.EXE

Now test that Doom 3 works:

    wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/Doom3.exe

As long as that works then 1) copy or 2) move the darkmod folder from ~/.doom3, or 3) create a symbolic link to it, whichever you want:

    1) cp -a ~/.doom3/darkmod ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/

    2) mv ~/.doom3/darkmod ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/

    3) ln -s ~/.doom3/darkmod ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/

Now you can run tdmlauncher.exe with Wine:

    wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Doom\ 3/darkmod/tdmlauncher.exe

EDIT: I've been testing this a little more, and there are a couple of rather small issues.

    • Game will occasionally not restart when installing a mission. Just kill wine ("ctrl + c" if in a console) and restart the game.
    • Leaning left/right/forward doesn't hold for too long, so you may want to consider setting "toggle lean yes" in the options.

  2.

As far as my problem, I have a 500 W power supply and the video card requires 550 W, so that is probably the problem. If so, the power supply must have a good means of cutting off power without turning my whole computer completely off. It seems to still provide power up to the max, then cuts off power to just the video card, which restarts again as power is provided and I get some form of black screen. I've also been having a few issues with T2 as well, though it either crashes or goes to almost all black except for some sky lighting whenever too much occurs.

A lot of power supplies are overrated, which means that while they can do 500W, they can't sustain 500W for a long period of time. The most important thing to look for in a power supply is the wattage on the 12V rail. It's usually listed on a label on the side of the PSU, and better PSUs have two or three 12V rails (which is not entirely true, but is industry standard to say they have multiple rails). I recommend checking out Jonny Guru's Power Supply Reviews, to get a good idea of what you need in a PSU.

Hell, 550 Watts for the graphics card?

The card itself doesn't require 550W, more like 300W. It needs high amps (40A+) on the combined 12V rail though, which is why Nvidia recommends 550W minimum. Some PSUs can deliver that rating with fewer watts, but most can't.

  3. Do you have any other Doom 3 mods (parallax, 3doom, etc) installed?

Are you editing DoomConfig.cfg according to this page?

Are you seeding the TDM torrent with your .doom3/darkmod directory? I was doing this originally and DoomConfig.cfg kept reverting to the original, so I unchecked DoomConfig.cfg from torrent sharing.

Do you have any darkmod files in the Doom 3 root folder (eg, /usr/local/games/doom3)?

  4. Get the fms folder from your torrent then. I really don't know why it's repeating the error as it hasn't done that before. The fms folder should have nothing more than

    training_mission\training_mission.pk4

Delete the other training_mission folder and TDM will replace it when you start the game.

  5. Yes, I do. ATI Radeon X850. I tried the game again and it locked up and went to a black screen again after about the same period of time as before, but this time I didn't get control back. I had to shut off my computer. This time, I was not moving around when it crashed, I just walked forward and started reading the book, and it crashed while I was sitting there reading - it's as if it happens after a set period of time, not when I trigger something. I guess I should try some of those performance tweaking suggestions (or all of them). Any suggestions for ATI cards specifically?

Turning off Catalyst AI is the number one concern for ATI, but those other tweaks could help. It would help us help you if you would list your computer specs (CPU, OS, RAM, Sound card, and video card driver version).

  6. No way man!  It's the first Dark Mod mission, and now it will never be playable again!  Not too many people are likely to do a whole separate install just to try one little mission, so they'll just miss it.  But it's up to Fidcal how he wants to spend his limited time, and yes there's a good case for just moving on, but I think it would be sad not to update it to work as another FM

What's the big deal with Thiefs Den? I just downloaded it, installed it, and played it just fine. It doesn't affect the current TDM release since it creates it's own folder and you run it with a specific command. It's still playable and shows just how far the mod has come since it's release. :)

  7. I've deleted the FM folder and tried to run TDM updater but it closes down immediately without any message. I decided to re-download just the updater itself, yet to no avail. To see what might be happening I decided to run it from a cmd line and received this error:

See this thread for a fix for that issue.

  8. If that was the issue, I would think that my problems would not be isolated to just doom3 but would affect my whole system causing a reboot, shut down, or computer freeze. When the game freezes, I am able to actually access and use task manager and subsequently return to the desktop upon ending the task.

Poor or overworked PSUs can cause a lot of system instability, especially during gaming, which just crashes games or applications. One way to test is to underclock your GPU, which should reduce the total draw on your PSU. See if it crashes less, and if it does then it's likely your PSU that is the problem. If not then we'll keep trying to find the source of the crashes, but seriously, it's been uncommon for Nvidia cards to crash, especially randomly like in your case. See here if you need a guide.

You could also watch your temps to see if it's overheating.

  9. +---darkmod
    | \---fms
    | \---training_mission
    | \---savegames

Something isn't right here, though I don't see how it would cause you to have to reinstall the training mission every time so the saves would work. This is what it should look like:

    +---darkmod
    | +---fms
    | | \---training_mission

The training_mission folder should be inside the fms folder, and there shouldn't be a savegames folder inside the darkmod folder. What I suggest you do is to delete the fms folder and run tdm_update.exe. It should create the fms folder and download the training mission again. If that doesn't fix it let us know.

  10. Well, I am able to get much farther in Doom 3 than before from a fresh boot up, however it still freezes. It would appear that for some reason, my system (almost certainly video card) is being overtaxed far more than it should be for an 04/05 game. Right now I am at a total loss as to how to deal with this problem as tests I have performed have found no issue what so ever.

Out of curiosity, have you upgraded your power supply? Your GTX285 requires a lot of power, and it's rare that an OEM PSU can properly handle that extra demand.

  11. So, I tried killing pulseaudio, which resulted in no sound. Then I|ve tried to get the oss drivers working which resulted in a system crash. Now Ive installed windows, but it just didnt want to be installed over any other partition but the one where i had my original ubuntu installed. Okaz.. and now after installing windows i cant get the ubuntu reinstalled and work again because i just cant get the grub loader installed and i get an fatal error durin the ubuntu installation. It seems like windows and ubuntu try reallu hard NOT to be compatible.

Sorry, im reallz frustrated. Windows doesn|t even get that i have a german kezboard. >/&

I wish i had the monez for a second hard drive..

Now i hope that i get doom3 to run right on windows at least.

    damn

Sorry that you are having these issues, but I really hope the Windows version you installed isn't 7...

  12. I bet there's a lot of people starting to learn how to map. In a couple of months we might see the first ones :)

Even BrokenArts is dropping hints that she wants me to work with her to make one...   She's never done anything in a map editor, and I've done little more than the tutorials with Dromed and Dark Radiant.

  13. That moddb graph looks about 160 to me unless there. If so, that's a rough total of 1500 + 600 torrent + 160 moddb = 2260. Or is there some other download stat somewhere? Where's that 400 come from?

Each point on the graph is the daily total. The first day was 49 downloads:

    post-2168-1256307985_thumb.jpg

    The daily totals are as follows: 49 + 120 + 161 + 83 + 52 + 26  for a grand total of  491  :)

  14. We are at about 1500 downloads from our mirrors (estimated based on hit counts and mirror weighting, as we don't have access to all the logs). Add 600 from the torrent and a few dozen I guess from moddb, atomicgamer and other sites hosting the full ZIP.

Moddb is currently showing over 400 downloads since 10/17...

  15. ok I got no love with this efort. I copied all that stuf into he file and only that stuff and I ran the updater but the up dater doesn't run. it flashes some words so fast I can't read them and disapears. but it tells windows it is using the folder so I can't do anything to it but even if I leave it alone for an hour to work nothing hapens. after several tries I was just able to make out the words "Updater cannot" or that's what it looked like to me, before it shut down. so I thought I botched a file that tells it where to look so I removed everything from the file deleted the darkmod file, made a new file, copied everything back in except for the updater and redownloaded the updater and ran it. same problem.

now what? how do I get the updater to run?

after a few more attempt I ca better read a few words "updater cant locate URI.p(something)" there's more I'm just not fast enough to read it

some fastfinger cntrl+printscreen-ing reveals a little more:

    "can't locate URI.pm in @INC <@inc contains: lib devel/lib CODE(0x35c65f4) C:\use . . . (that's all I can read right now) working on it

See here for the solution to that problem.

  16. These are the files added or replaced by the Extreme Quality Mod (3mood+parallax+brilliant):

    base -

    config.spec -- replaced

    game00.pk4 -- replaced

    binary.conf -- replaced

    gamex86.dll -- replaced

    glprogs -

    afxadd.vfp -- added

    afxblurb.vfp -- added

    afxweight.vfp -- added

    interaction.vfp -- replaced (original is 5.9KB, new is 4.9KB)

    materials -

    AFX.mtr -- added

pak3Parallax.pk4 -- added (includes another interaction.vfp (3.3KB) a lot of new or modified Textures)

EDIT > I tried to install this mod (Vista 32bit) but must not have done it correctly. TDM still worked properly, but Doom 3 had no lights. Still, I suggest installing a second instance of Doom 3, patching to 1.3.1.1304, and installing darkmod there. Keep your original install for your other games/mods.

  17. I've downloaded the full mod from Torrent (very quickly!), and then installed on the right directory on .doom3/darkmod/

Then today i tried the updater (linux version), and the updater form the shell tried to update *all* the files of the Mod!

When he's checking checksum i think there is some problem, because i don't think that *all* files need to be updated.

Can someone confirm if all files of the mod changed form the main torrent release?

I've been seeding the torrent since release and just ran the updater. Everything is fine and nothing was downloaded. Just make sure you are running it in the darkmod folder, not from another directory.

  18. snd_pcm_open SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK 'default' failed: Device or resource busy

Definitely not a TDM problem, it sounds like the sound driver hasn't fully released from the previous run. I wonder if it would be possible to insert a longer delay between restarts? greebo? Tels? Anyone?

Also, I've noticed several ATI graphics card users having sound issues, and I'm wondering if the graphics driver is partly (if not fully) to blame.

A quick search tells me that ATI does have the Catalyst AI in the linux drivers, so if it's running try turning that off and see if it helps (it does help turning it off under Windows).
