  1. IdTech4 engine will basically lock you to 60 FPS max. On the subject of Anti-Aliasing, I've actually gotten better performance out of turning them off in Dark Mod, and then specifying them driver-side (ATI Catalyst Control, for me.)
  2. It would also be helpful to know your Computer's specs, so we know where your performance bottleneck would be.
  3. Yep. I remember joyously sprinting up and successfully blackjacking guards on the butt in Thief II , so this is a bit of a transition to make.
  4. I think this is what you're wanting. Just beware that it's a hacky edit of the shortsword script. tdm_weapon_shortsword.script.txt 1. Create a folder in your darkmod directory named "script". 2. Download this file to the darkmod/script folder 3. Rename it tdm_weapon_shortsword.script (i.e. get rid of the .txt extension) 4. Swashbuckle to your heart's delight.
  5. When a mission is installed, the Dark Mod turns the mission folder (e.g. darkmod/fms/stlucia) into the new Root folder for most intents and purposes (e.g. looking for script files, placing savegame files). In a very real sense, a mission is treated as a mod-of-the-darkmod. Strange. First (though I doubt it is the problem) I'd recommend running tdm_update.exe. Maybe one of the resource packages is corrupt.
  6. The design problem I see is that TDM's frob is more extensive than Thief's use of frob. Thief's was essentially limited to 1. World Activation (e.g. doors, buttons) 2. Move-to-Inventory (grabbing a water crystal, grabbing loot, hauling a crate in Thief's clunky fashion). 3. Inventory Activation. (e.g. drink potion) TDM added another use of the frob key, which is 4. Grabber Manipulation (e.g. pick up moveable & drop moveable). This would excessively crowd the functionality of one button, so some function of the key had to be relocated. The one with the most potential to be frustrating is Inventory Activation. Thus, the "use" key is born. No longer do I accidentally lob a mine when all I want is to frob a mass of loot from a table!
  7. You don't have to use the in-game mission downloader. You can directly download the mission files in your browser and put them in "darkmod/fms".
  8. I think the team decided that a standalone build was far more important a project than something as petty and inconsequential as GUI elements stretching. Also, my secondary monitor is, indeed, 1280x1024.
  9. Some missions are hosted elsewhere. Requiem, in particular (a damn fine FM, if I do say so), is hosted on mediafire. Just download the .zip or .pk4 and plonk it in "darkmod/fms"
  10. The first problem I see is that the folder TDM is in must be named "darkmod". The second thing I see is that you've installed darkmod to a folder on your desktop. I'm unsure whether that'd cause this problem, but nevertheless the desktop isn't really a proper place to install any software. Move the darkmod folder to, for instance, "C:/" or "C:/games".
  11. Per-material shaders should theoretically be possible now that there's access to the renderer. Somehow the code would have to be able to parse material files to determine whether or not to use e.g. a parallax shader. Someone would have to handdraw heightmaps for textures. Beyond those things, I don't know what else would need to be done.
  12. This is sort of what I hope happens. If all goes well, the Steam Box and SteamOS will be just another general-purpose computer like all of our PCs and Macs. If all goes badly, the Steam Box and SteamOS will be a pre-handcuffed package that'll have all the shovelware limitations that the consoles have had.
  13. Not sure if terrible tautology, or just terrible chiasm. Seriously, writers. You're not making a profound point just by using an old-as-writing-itself poetic device badly. In lieu of the demos/shareware of olden days, maybe this is why Let's Play videos are so popular. People can see genuine gameplay, genuine game-playing, and draw their own reactions from that instead of spending $60 first.
  14. Ah, yes. Back before I honed the "handful of nails in the throat" sound of Benny. Y'all are going to like how it evolved in the vocal set. Writing banter doesn't come easily (at least not to me), but I think it adds all sorts of vitality to the setting. I got inspiration from that dialogue from sitting at a George Webb for lunch, and listening to conversations around me. Taking inspiration from smalltalk makes for great TDM conversations, because a good deal of smalltalk tends to transcend times and places.
  15. All this mention of cheek spikes, and no paw hooks?
  16. Yeah, a bit. Not enough atrocious American midwest accent, though. Worth it just for the Beer Song and the fabulous voice acting.
  17. If your ears are sensitive, it's probably a fine idea to get yourself a discrete sound card. Ever since I bought a recording DAW, I've used that as my sound card. But I do remember years ago buying a Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold. It sounded fabulous, but it had one problem: bad electrical grounding. I would hear clicks and buzzes when I moved the mouse or when the CD-ROM drive spun up. I ended up painting the entire card with rubber cement (especially where it touched the midtower case) to isolate it. I still hear the same clicks and buzzes in onboard sound cards nowadays, but there's nothing I can do to remedy it.
  18. Smiley face: On my way to a master's degree. That is to say, I barely have 30 minutes to myself (or TDM or other hobbies) most days. Sad face.

Yep. Next stop: PhD or hectic worklife or starting a family. Not much time.

  19. You would have to write your own scriptevent to return most soundprop stuff. If you think you can approximate it in another way, there's always ai.AI_AlertLevel. Don't forget that you have to cast the guard as an ai in your script: ai this_is_the_ai = sys.getEntity(name);
  20. Bleghch. I've always hated that moveables in the grabber "snap" to the center of gravity.
  21. I think this was discussed some years ago. It's got something to do with the player origin passing through geometry during the mantle. Edit: Yop yop, I got ghosted.
  22. With a few tweaks, that model could already make an interesting unique piece of loot.
  23. The power supply on my monitor started arcing, and now my graphics card puts pretty red sparkles all over everything.

@Biker, FSP is one of the companies that makes good power supplies. (Its all they do) If you mean, buy a PC Power & Cooling... um, no. Occasionally even the good ones have flaky issues that get by QC

I'm in the US and all my stuff is on APC UPS, even the cable modem and internet lines.

  24. I notice under Max Payne 3's PC System requirements: Got enough digital rights management in place, yet, Rockstar? Oh, you're going to release it on Steam on top of all that DRM? Disappointing. I nearly bought Final Fantasy VII during the summer sale, but stopped when I noticed "Requires a Square Enix account" under system requirements. NoooOOooo thank you. I'll go borrow my brother's old Playstation instead, thanks.
