  1. Why is tax charged on a used item that's being sold as refurbished? Isn't that double-dipping? It reminds me of MS and the way they wanted to force every Xbox user to go online so that they and game publishers could extort money out of people when they resell games.

  2. There's been an addendum to a contract that says I can't spend time messing with DR and TDM until RoW release on another project, as "it's distracting me". So... Thanks for all the fun and games, but it's important to keep this as I need it on my CV. (fku pariah, you grass).

Who is this employer who has the right to monitor and control your personal life? If they decide that spending time with your wife is "distracting" you, can they forbid that too?

  3. Impressed to see that TDM works well on the open-source radeon driver in Linux. A little bit stuttery and I only tried the training mission, but still.

Yeah it's got three big fans, not the horrible whiny single fan that some stock cards have. It makes a pleasant whooshing sound when heavily loaded.

Sapphire R9 290 from 2014 or thereabouts. I woudn't touch nVidia on Linux for the same reason as kano. I want to support vendors who support open source.

Xarg hits the bullseye. Watching retards like Anita Sarkeesian suddenly about-face and start defending video games because Trump says they're bad must be one of the best things I've seen this year.

  5. Uk goverment trying to force through snoopers charter on the back on paris attacks, a bill which was being blocked by democratic debate.

Last I heard it was no order for the metadata, but a warrant for the fulll URL. But that might have changed (and with HTTPS the full URL wouldn't be available anyway).

They've even admitted that the bill doesn't actually give any new powers to counter-terror spies anyway. It's about making it easier for local police to trawl for minor offences.

  7. Some dictionary awarded a 'best new words of the year' (I guess that got added this year), and one was 'ghosting'. It only took 17 years, but it's finally been made official. Now let's see if we can get taffer or lightgem.

I'd never heard of the social media meaning of "ghosting" before. I assumed the new definition was the usage from the Riddick movies (where it means "killing people").

But "ghosting" isn't a new word. It was used in the days of analogue television to refer to certain kinds of double-picture interference.

Cooperative multiplayer games are fine. It's just the competitive ones that are the problem. Either you get let down by random team-mates, or you're the one letting them down and you get abuse.

  9. How to screw yourself over on a Linux machine: 1. deactivate logins as root, to set it back the way it shipped. 2. Forget to add yourself as a sudo'er first! 3. Profit, or (more likely) install a backup.

  10. What would you do about a piece of human trash that floors the gas and burns rubber at 2 AM on occasion, waking you up in the middle of the night?

  11. On Sunday morning, I dreamt a TDM dream. Yes, really. I was inside some city level with nice moody lighting. There were winding streets and regularly shaped courtyards paved with nothing but oversized square stone tiles. One courtyard had something like a chessboard-style arrangement of paving tiles with Roman numerals, and a mechanical contraption to go with it. This was apparently some kind of puzzle, but my dream-self couldn't figure out the specifics.

I once dreamed of boating down a river in terrain made in Blender. My dream self had the brilliant idea to bake the outdoor lighting into vertex colour information to be exported with the model into DR. Never got round to trying this in real life though.

The security of Linux has nothing to do with it being "obscure". The security comes from the open source nature and the fact that if a program misbehaves people can remove it, modify it, or even switch to a different distro.

People can be as weird as they like, provided they are not harming others. If someone wants to call themselves a "vampire" that's up to them. But they don't get to force the rest of us to play along with their delusion.

  12. Got a nice performance boost after upgrading my motherboard BIOS.

    1. OrbWeaver

      OrbWeaver

I wonder how that could happen. AIUI the BIOS is basically out of the picture once the OS is running.

Only the web site and the dependencies SVN tree are hosted on SourceForge. The download links are to files on Greebo's (codereader) Github.

  15. How would I go about outsourcing patchwork? I thoroughly regret deciding to make caves.

    1. OrbWeaver

      OrbWeaver

The best caves are made with a 3D modelling app. Patch-based caves tend to LOOK patch-based: mostly cylinders or spheres with the odd bump here and there.

Authorities have nothing to gain from training people to think for themselves. A population bereft of critical thinking abilities is much easier to control.

Which part do you consider treasonous, the president negotiating with a foreign country or the opposition party opposing the government? Both seem like regular and expected political activities to me.
