  1. I am pretty sure, that that either already happens (i am not that much into "social media" storm watching) or will happen in the near future. I would expect the attacks to be disguised as attacks on sexism though - so look out for debates and name calling involving keywords like "barbie", "girlie", "slut" or whatever else may be associated with beauty-"defining" physical attributes makeup or "sexy" couture. I would expect the debate to start around the fashion model business and actresses. As the whole topic of beauty seems to be more associated with humans of female sex, the discussion will likely be about negative or positive discrimination of female actresses and models. At least academically, the hard targets are not privilegues because of sex, gender, skin color... - but because of character itself. An example: In the IT business world we already got some discussions about how to use the full potential of introvert coders. They have great skills but can't work in cubicles, hate the phone, are silent at meetings, don't like presentations and never ask for a pay raise. So they get ignored often. That wastes their potential and might make them feel... ignored. Don't know, whether traits like introversion are alterable - but they surely affect, how one is treated by the environment (it also affects, how one treats his environment though). The ultimate queistion is, whether everyone really is free to choose his own character. If not, character would have to be treated like skin color too!
  2. Politics are most often "Off Topic" when it comes to TDM - so this sub forum should be fine.
  3. Hint: Make a folder inside your "downloads" folder and install TDM inside that. You always have reliable write permissions on your downloads folder in all versions of Windows.
  4. Just for the record: You have to stop buying their games to make them listen to your message. Spelling, grammar, whether they like you or whether you like them, does not make them change direction - only money or the lack of it does that. As i expect the majority to just continue preordering their games and matching "season passes", i do not expect Eidos to not use micro transactions in their next games though. I share your grief. But you have to let go. At some time, new independent and small studios or even single developers will make new games, that will be worth playing.
  5. You have to do it without bee ing noticed by the hornets.
  6. Of course it depends on the environment whether exhibiting a lighter skin color decreases the probability of beeing beaten up for no apparent reason or not. Only a racist white environment grants that privilegue because in a non-racist environment the skin color would not matter - and in a racist black environment a lighter skin color would even increase the likelyhood of getting beaten up for no reason... But all that white/male/straight privilegues stuff is not actually about color/sex/gender/sexual orientation or something like that. It is more a vehicle for raising awareness about the existance of group dynamics that are actually hurting and even killing people... It certainly does not help the cause when people overshoot while trying to raise awareness. But they are just humans and experience emotions too. That said, it looks like the white privilegue is still real in current western culture (especially in USA and France). I doubt, that there are still significant privilegues for beeing male or straight in less religious communities though. The group-think awareness improved a lot in the last few decades. But proliferation of broadcast capabilities also drastically increased the reach of throlls and radicals of all "sides". And it looks like we are heading towards a big depression that could provide the perfect environment for the rise of a new Hitler. So times keep getting more interesting...
  7. So we are at war now? Is there even any competition (i would not count Thief, and Dishonored is quite a different thing gameplay-wise)?
  8. Yep. Like the type of missions where one has to infiltrate the hornets' nest and get out with a prisoner over the shoulder. Would also enjoy knocking out some guards and seizing some shiny "evidence" and advanced equipment while i am there...
  9. Doing it like in shadwen would certainly need C code inside the engine. This would also need code in the engine. It seems to be possible to safe and load to and from disk by script though. The wiki page about Saint Lucia mentions the needed script "events". Fun fact: That page about a mission also is the only page to mention the loadGame "event". saveGame is also mentioned in the TDM Script Reference...
  10. If one would pull up that sort of joke, he would probably get severly beaten up by the watch or end at the gallows
  11. Auto-restarting the map on failure is already easily scriptable. But if with "reloading" you meant going back to arbitrary points in the past... then nope - not without implementing some sort of game state history in the engine itself. But for a single mission, there might be ways to fake it without changing the engine: - Scripting saves and reloading of those - Storing the state history (like locations and status changes) for selected game world objects and reinitializing those on demand. The id Tech 4 scripting system is touring complete but does not support arrays of arbitrary lengths. So you probably would need to invent some workaround for that (maybe by using custom entities for storage) to keep track of the selected entities' state or created saves.
  12. Well, the guards have swords and would like to use them. Also, there are some tiny differences between, what the player experiences and what regular people are assumed to experience: The player hides in plain sight even, if it is not completely pitch black and a guard is standing right in front of him. Regular people would be visible. The player can douse a torch in a second. Regular people don't have water arrows. The player can just wait in some dimly lit spot until guards stop searching. For regular people, the guards would move chairs aside, look above and below tables and would not honor monster clip. The player can jump from a window sill to a pipe and climb to the roof to navigate well-guarded places. Regular people would fall to their death. The player can get a rope acting like a regular ladder up to any place exhibiting the tiniest amount of wood. Regular people don't have rope arrows. The player can navigate air ducts and other places, that would be death traps for regular people. The player can reload at any time and therefore does not fear death at all. Regular people would not try to go on a killing spree - especially if not well-trained in that business. The player can knock out and kill silently. Normal people would have to deal with shouts of pain and resisting victims. The player can remove a guard and nobody will notice. Regular people would experience guards actually searching for their comrads. The player has absolutely no problem with killing pixels. Regular people don't like killing other people. There is a lot more, that is somewhat different in a video game like TDM than it would be expected to be in a "real" steampunk medieval world... And the most likely official punishment for preaching against the order that has been brought to man by the great builder himself and is not to be questioned would probably be somethin in between pillory and burning at the stake - depending on the exact words used, the mood of the judge and whether he gets convicted by the builders or a regular court. Could also get instantly beaten to death by the mob. People could be quite religious in a steampunk medieval world.
  13. Could we laserscan and motioncapture em for mesh and animation? Would still be a lot work for skeleton and textures though...
  14. I don't think, that the compass issue prevents people from posting TDM playthroughs on Youtube.
  15. I would like the small and the big ones. Both could be underground dwellers or "alive novelty toys" kept in cages by nobility. The big ones are also good as (really dangerous) guards to be found in the most excentric upper class' mansion exteriors. The smaller ones could also be citizen of "The City". They might be mostly lower class. Some might be nimble and adept with mechanics (complicated traps and locks) and poisons. But i don't think, big or small trolls are comming to TDM soon. Modelling and animation seem to be extremely laborous and complicated tasks...
  16. I would not have expected, that a non-white would get a fair trial despite the public outrage. Seems, there have been upgrades lately. The immigrants are indeed welcomed by the corps (and a lot of middle-class home owners) and add to the pressure on the labor market. But i doubt, the corps are guilty here (seems to be an exception as they normally are guilty for all the bad things *g*). The real couse, why the immigrants come, are the geopolitical decisions of the last hundred years. Destabilizing entire regions of course leads to migration. The effect might take a while to emerge. You might have to wait some decades, to see the results of any changes (or absence of such changes) in the current politicts. Well, the same parties will surely try the same tactics again while expecting different results... TL;DR: Politics are the cause for immigration. There are more than two parties. Don't vote for the two big ones.
  17. I recommend storing the test map on the wiki server. Linking resources from external services (and maybe even depending on accounts of single users) led to a lot of link rot in the past.
  18. The training mission is included in TDM. It is automatically installed by the updater. In case of precarious internet connectivity use the connectivity of friends or a cybercafé to get a full TDM installation. As you are at it, use same connection to get all the other missions by using the ingame downloader. There are quite a lot of em and you will probably need some months to play through all of em...
  19. Thought about reporting TheUnbeholden's post because of overt racism, but did not. Think, that still could count as non-hate-speech protected by freedom of speech. As the posted video also is full of it, TheUnbeholden is probably not even off-topic...
  20. I really like to hate and rant about C and languages with manual memory management in general... But in this case: It is a game engine. It does a lot of complicated things. And it has to do that sixty and more times a second. Of course it is written in C - a language that for most stuff is an order of magnitude faster than Java (wich is still a lot faster than interpreted Python). Most application software out there should not have been written in C/C++ in the first place - but games in general and especialy 3D game engines like the id Tech 4 are not in that group. They need all the performance they can get. TDM is certainly not more buggy than other stuff written in that language and the bugs are the price we have to pay to have this nice game, that runs fine on an i5 or even an ole Core2 Quad (most of the time).
  21. Not a C coder... But a "Segmentation fault" means, some pointer pointed to an unallocated address into memory (and you got lucky, that it did not point to some random but allocated address, because it would probably just have acted weird after release without telling you, that there is anything wrong at all). Regardless, how broken your model is, that means, that you found a bug in TDM. That is the chance for someone with actual C skills and source code access to investigate further (or not, if it is not considered more worth to hunt down, than some other bugs - and there are always bugs in software of the size of a 3D game engine). There might or might not additionally be a bug in your model and you indeed might or might not be able to get around it by experimenting with the exporter...

  23. Just updated and x64 works now. The legacy x32 executable still gives the same error as last time though.
  24. That looks like a confirmation, that there is nothing that uses LOD. As nothing uses LOD, there are no LOD memory chunks to free.
