  1. Challenges in stealth games like "never be seen" are stupid and actually harm your fun in playing, because obviously, you wanna achieve the perfect score and always reload.

Some people enjoy such challenges (not me though) - so their existence is fine (if not used to lock away the good stuff from blackjacks like me). Whether they are more harm or good highly depends on the individual playing the game. So you should always feel free to cherrypick your fun from any game.

  2. Very relevant for every stealth gamer. This is exactly why I try to only reload when I die. Excellent channel BTW, if you don't know it.

I don't care about my stealth score - but if i get a guard into combat mode i most often still reload. TDM does not reward failure at all and neither combat nor hiding until the guard cools down again is fun for me. But blackjacking random people and robbing em blind is - don't know why though...

  3. there's secret portals in certain area's of the ice wall that allow you to warp to the other side of the world, japan used one of those warps to get to pearl harbour in two days.

polynesians have been using those portals for years to travel all around the pacific.

Nice try, but Japan is way too far away from the great wall of ice. Also, the portal there only leads further north. There is nothing of interest there - only wildlings and the undead.

  4. I wonder, how version-control-friendly map files are.

If changing something in a map does not alter the order and representation of unchanged stuff in the file, GIT or any other version control software could be used. That would even allow collaboration on one map by different authors at the same time - as long as they don't change the same area.

  5. I have fixed it now, but just FYI: This bug is an unbelievably rare corner-case! :D It only ever happens if you successfully finish a mission that doesn't have a shop without ever pressing escape, i.e., opening the main menu gui, during that play-through. So cudos to you for finding it. ^^

    Thank you for fixing.

I would probably have triggered it for almost all shop-less missions as i rarely use the menu while playing and tend to finish missions in the same session i started them.

Might indeed have been my first mission without a shop in 2.07...

  6. I have tried to reproduce this issue with perfect stealth score and all loot collected, without any luck. How would you discribe your playthrough? Did you get spotted by AI? Did you get all the loot?

I am not sure, whether i really got all the loot. I definitely tried, but most often i miss some well-hidden trinkets or coins. I blackjacked some AI (including a sleeping one) and might have been almost seen by the elite guard (he barked but did not draw the sword). I tend to quicksave a lot and quickloaded a few times after alerting AI (i generally load if AI starts screaming or drawing weapons). Most often, i get a non-zero stealth score. If a mission has internal leaks, that score can also be 2-digits because then, i tend to alert some innocent bystanders on another floor when running through already emptied hallways.

This was the only time i ever got an all-zero stats screen. The stats screen of the next mission i played showed plausible values.

  7. something else not wanted, the loot telling you what percentage of loot you've collected, and how much percentage is left to collect. Basically how would you know, does the thief have special powers and can pick up wavelengths coming from the loot telling him/her how much is left!!!!!??????

No, thieves in general just leave the place when they don't expect there to be more to get, when the place becomes too dangerous (not in TDM) or when they can't carry more (not in TDM).

So from a logic perspective, the thief could be able to gauge the value of the loot already collected (already implemented in TDM by cycling through the inventory items until the loot overview is displayed) and compare it with his personal goal (implemented in TDM in the objectives screen for missions defining a loot objective).

But why should anyone want to add a reminder about the currently looted value. Most players will just taff around and collect what they find before leaving after they have visited all enterable places. Loot objectives are in general not hard enough to reach that the average player would need a reminder to search for more...

  8. If not even Clan Quest Mod 4 made it for Bloodlines than It seems the community is way too action oriented.

Fast-paced action has the biggest player base. So i would expect all top-lists wich allow that genre group to be highly biased towards faced-paced action.

Because of the huge audience group size differences, TDM simply has no chance to score a hit in a competition that is open for more action-oriented genres too.

  9. Enjoyed the mission on 2.07 beta and would santa again.

The snow is pretty on the current beta and i like the interactive machinery.
Had to turn off EFX effects though because they cause way too much echo on player and AI footsteps.

I can confirm, that Wade's safe can be opened by frobbing through the painting without using the button under the desktop first.

  10. Just did a fresh install of 2.07 on Windows 7 wusing tdm_update.exe from first post, started the x64 version, downloaded one mission and quit the game using the menu.

Instead of quitting, it just stopped working leading to the standard Windows crash dialog containing the following "problem details":

  11. I don't have a steam account and will probably not leave GOG for Epic Games. But i signed up to get Subnautica too.

It looks good, is a fresh take on the survival genre and the grind is more fun than in other survival games. Will need to find a way to increase draw distance and reduce pop-ins though...

  12. Waiting 10 minutes every time to start the game has definitely killed it for me, but if you say the DRM has been removed... it's going to be a fun experiment to see how fast it loads now, just because Denuvo is out...

There shouldn't be any noticable difference regarding load times or ingame performance. Denuvo is pretty lightweight despite beeing the most complex code modification protection (Denuvo actually is not DRM but only serves to prevent manipulation or removal of the actual DRM) ever used for games. They avoid having the checks in parts of code that are critical for performance (they still sprinkle millions of checks over non-performance-critical parts of the code, wich makes it uncrackable by hand {but cracker groups made tools for [semi-]automatic cracking}).

Removing Denuvo is more an economic choice as it costs per sold protected copy of the game.

  13. Since the mod was released in 2009, we've only had one "compulsive mapper" who does this. Let's guard against any concept creep that might suggest that this is a wide-spread problem. The vast majority of mappers in the community have the ability to see and avoid obvious breeches of common courtesy.

Why not fix the problem for the general case when you have the chance. It never hurts to implement some drama prevention in a community full of artists.

  14. I doubt that that is the reason for the prices. The reason is rather that they get the money they ask for.

I compared the console situation with the cheap inkjets for a reason. Of course it gets abused a bit.

Once you got regular people to buy some device they are more likely to buy stuff compatible to that instead of buying a new, more versatile, device that can do the same and is more cost efficient in the long run - but more expensive short term.

Also, most console gamers do not buy hundreds of games - but less than ten. If you are not needing a PC anyway and you only play occasionally and pretty much always the same games, you are probably better off buying a console - despite the games beeing overpriced a lot.

For that gamer profile, the comfort factor of not needing to know anything about drivers and stuff (yes, it is pretty easy shit, but a lot of people are still scared by that), might be an additional incentive to spend more on games. A lot of people see the golden cage as a feature, they are willing to pay a premium for.

Regarding DLCs: That problem definitely is not console-exclusive. But on the PC you can just wait some years and they give you the GotY-Edition with all DLCs for a third of the original main game price - because on the PC, the long tail is (and always was) a thing. Now, that console hardware does not age that quick anymore, this might already happen there - or maybe already happened (don't know, i don't own a console).

  15. It is not complicated - everyone would know in advance, that such changes would just not make it onto the servers. Case solved as most players would not see the map. all the drama would be reduced to "I forbid the derivative work from beeing uploaded to the TDM servers" from the original author and that would be it. No need to argue. No need to accuse anyone of anything or to open drama threads about blatant copies.

I see, that you might miss out on a lot of drama due to such an easy solution. And i see the point that having some drama from time to time is fun and all. But that seems to be not the kind of drama that generates me my crack... i mean missions for TDM. Compulsive mappers are good because they map a lot. But compulsive mappers will also always map stuff they are not allowed to map and they will keep taking "too much inspiration" from other people's work from time to time. So let's just contain the fallout to the betatesting area where everyone is expecting to see the most horrible things anyway - and everything is fine. The compulsive mappers map, original authors point to community rule violations, compulsive mappers map more and eventually release confoming mission - that i then play. Works for me and i will still get enough drama in the off topic section. :P

  16. I would try the following: Start at the bottom of the list linket by chakkman.

After each mission's first start, play until reaching an open area or window to an open area and turn your head - if it is too laggy, continue with next mission - else continue playing the current mission.

No matter how lousy your hardware is - there probably are missions wich will run just fine (around 30 FPS) without reducing texture size. In a few you might even be able to use soft shadows for a significant immersion boost.

In general, old mansion missions or dungeon crawls without or with a mostly unlit exterior should be fine.

Also, try to extinguish lights, keep doors and windows closed and blackjack or kill all AI to improve performance.

  17. All i can say is that the prices in the Xbox Store are a LOT higher than the prices on Steam. And the kids still seem to buy. Bit of a chicken <-> egg thing. And, i can't say i can really complain about Steam. I bought loads of cheap games there, discounted or not. Of course, if the name is Bethesda or Rockstar Games, you won't see cheap prices so soon, because, again, the kids buy.

Its not fair to compare console and PC prices as console hardware is subsidised by game prices. Same as with cheap printers: The hardware is sold under value and the ink is absurdly overpriced.

Consoles are good for casual gamers (no judgement) playing a few games occasionally, while PCs are good for hardcore gamers and hoarders.

  18. The whole right-to-fix-breakage thing is more of an academical value because even artists would not get grumpy about that sort of modification. And the whole licensing stuff is about the ability to enforce rules in court. So fixing the license issue for fixing abandoned missions is only nice to have.

I suggest altering the beginner tutorials to suggest using some CC license that explicitly allows remixing (CC3-BY-SA or CC3-BY-NC-SA recommended). That should fix the issue for the future in most cases. Where the author still chose a restrictive license or for old missions, you can always go hunting - only one original or derivative asset licensed under any permissive and viral license is enough to make the whole mission be covered under that license too (hence they are called viral).

There still would be no legal protection against "blatant copies" whenever the source map contains anything covered by the famous CC3-BY-NC-SA (the SA makes it a viral license) wich has been stuck to the TDM assets. But with the proposed community rules, such copies would never reach the download servers and that should equal non-availability for over 99% of the TDM player base. So it will probably still occur from time to time but also will get fixed before maps reach the players.
