    Metro games

I thought you do have a "light gem" of sorts? It's that little blue light on your watch that turns on when you're visible and turns off when you're not (diegetic UI ftw). Also, for anyone who loves the Metro games (and/or the STALKER games) and is interested in this sort of thing, I recently found this great video detailing the history of their development (beware spoilers!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3BmubIQklU The series as a whole is definitely one of my favorites (:
  2. That's phenomenal work, Petike! I had a listen to a bunch of the samples, they seem just about perfect. I'll also say, there appear to be some credits for a few of the ambients if you download that old OST (e.g. mansion_outside is, I think, the same as "Outside the Mansion" on the album, which is credited to mrDischarged). I'm not sure how accurate this is, but probably worth noting. I've also just downloaded Audacity and conducted a quick test on mixing ambient tracks: https://soundcloud.com/user-822809495/basement/s-G4nlS Didn't do a whole lot here, just looped it once and added a fade-out at the end, but I think something like that would be preferable for a "listenable" version of the OST. Thoughts?
  3. So I guess if an official release was going to be a thing, the following questions would have to be asked: 1. Which tracks do we include, and in what order? Which do we exclude? (e.g. the original OST includes 4 seconds of frog noises; great for mapping, not so much for casual listening...) 2. Is there a way to find the proper credits for each track? 3. How do we handle different versions of the same ambience? Package them individually, or find a way to nicely merge them into one long track? Also, a note for the wiki: the main menu theme isn't located in the tdm_sound_ambient folders, it's actually in tdm_gui01.pk4, which it why it took me forever to find
  4. So I recently had a hankering for the TDM OST, and really wanted to get all those ambients loaded nicely into iTunes or on my phone for easy listening. That means getting them in .mp3 format rather than the .ogg files that come with the mod. After some digging, I found a very old version of the OST available for download on Mod DB: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/addons/official-soundtrack-vol-1 However, it dates from way back, and is even missing the iconic main menu music. I subsequently found that VLC Media Player is a good way to easily convert the files myself, and I've started happily doing so for my own use. This got me thinking, though: would it be worth compiling and releasing an updated soundtrack?
  5. The words "cathedrals of steel" couldn't be more apt. What I wouldn't give to see this turned into a level!
  6. Thanks, Norton, for nuking my TDM installation and forcing me to reconfigure all my settings... >:(

It could be worse. At least your computer still boots. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/02/04/microsoft_windows_update_woes/

That said, a computer that can't boot anymore is pretty darn secure!

Funnily, most update issues are actually caused by overzealous security suites.

  8. The thing is, the readables aren't in a .pk4. They're either in the xdata folder in my main darkmod directory, or they're in the mission folder itself. Opening DR as an administrator does sort of help with successfully writing readables (if I recall correctly) but is very much a band-aid solution, and also has some sort of problem with it. I forget what the exact behavior was, but I think it was an issue with editing a preexisting readable.
  9. Hi all, Now that the semester has wound down and I have some time on my hands, I thought I'd look into a problem that's been affecting me for awhile now. Times past, I configured TDM and DR, and they were all fine. TDM worked when it was installed on my desktop, and DR found it and wrote to the folder with no issues. That was before upgrading to TDM 2.06 and DR 2.6.0 x64. Ever since then, I've been getting errors from DR. Two major things appear to be broken: the particle system and the readable editor. I get the following errors from them: This is strange, because previously all my settings worked without complaint. I also think this may have something to do with TDM 2.06, as previous versions of DR also threw these errors, where they hadn't with TDM 2.05. For reference, here are my DR path settings: I don't have a mission set, because I tend to hop back and forth between projects. Again, I previously had no problems with this. Also noteworthy is this is happening on two separate machines, one with Windows 7 64-bit and one with Windows 10 64-bit installed. The Windows 10 version would even crash sometimes when these errors came up, though I don't currently have the error logs for them. Am I just an idiot and doing something wrong here? On my one Windows 10 machine, I've tried repeatedly reinstalling everything in different places, and I still got these errors. I do have one more, brand new Windows 10 machine, completely untouched, that I want to try installing everything on, though I'd appreciate help in doing so as I'm afraid of setting things up incorrectly and getting these errors again. If possible, I'd also like to fix my Windows 7 installation, though that will have to wait since I won't have access to that machine for a spell. So, any ideas on what's causing these errors? And how to I correctly install TDM and DR, if indeed I've been setting it up wrong?

  11. Good spot! The whole foyer is a homage to Crimson Peak (though the rest of the mansion is totally its own thing...).
  12. Seems like the right time of year to post a haunted house WIP...
  13. Don't forget, guys, we're gonna have to port TDM to every console on the market, which means henceforth all missions must be smaller and contain load screens in unintuitive places. We've also got to show off our swanky graphics and animations, so QTEs are now a must. Players like pointlessly mashing buttons in a stealth game, right? And of course, don't neglect the XP system and wildly unbalanced skill trees. Extra XP for headshots, anyone? Oh, and to streamline our player experience, mappers must now make missions more linear and periodically implement points of no return to force progression. Obviously, our audience can't handle sprawling maps, organic exploration, and actual problem-solving that involves a decent bit of thinking. I mean, what are we, an "immersive sim"? Ridiculous, I tell you!
  14. Don't think I lost anything, but it totally broke my wifi drivers. I managed to roll back to before the update, and I think all is well now. Not really concerned about it now, since it's a work computer, but it does make be feel really hesitant about buying a $1800 gaming laptop that can only run Windows 10...
  15. Can confirm this update screws users over, I myself got steamrolled by it. I utterly hate Windows 10 with the fiery depths of my soul. This garbage has frustrated me more than all other OS's I've ever used combined.
  16. Ok, I tried reinstalling DR. I tried older versions of DR. I tried TDM 2.06 in both C drive and on the desktop. I tried changing folder owner and permissions. Nothing is working. Am I seriously the only one experiencing this??? On two separate computers, no less? Just what on earth am I doing wrong here? The only other thing I can think of doing is rolling back to TDM 2.05 and see if that makes any sort of difference, but I don't know how since I'm using the updater to install, and it automatically grabs 2.06.
  17. Something like this might not be so bad: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/470304?searchField=All&sortBy=relevance&ao=on&ft=triptych&offset=0&rpp=20&pos=2 But yeah, quickly flipping through the Met collection, all the European triptychs seem pretty Christ-oriented.
  18. Alright, I did a brand new install in C:\ (my root drive) and no dice; I'm still getting the same errors (and also, Darkradiant crashes every time I try to create a new particle). I might try wiping everything and starting again, but I'm not sure what difference it will make. In the meantime, any thoughts on what might be causing this?
  19. I've never had problem with TDM on the desktop before. Like I stated, TDM 2.05 and DR 2.5.0 worked great with my existing setup. Updating something seems to have broken it - I suspect DR might be the cause, since the way settings work were tweaked between the two versions. Also, I don't have a mission folder set because I hop missions very frequently. Also hasn't been a problem previously. Where is everyone installing their TDM these days? Program Files? I can maybe see if I can do a fresh install on the Windows 10 machine and see if installation location clears it up. It just puzzles me why the current location wouldn't work, since it did before.
  20. Evening all, Has anyone here ever gotten this error? I'm pretty sure this is what's breaking both my particle and readable editors. Right now I basically can't create either, and it's driving me nuts... I can confirm this is happening in both Windows 7 and Windows 10, two separate machines. Absolutely didn't happen back in TDM 2.05 or DR 2.5.0. Here's what happens when attempting to create a new particle: And here is what my mod path looks like: Readable Editor settings: [Edit] Manually adjusting the xdata path seems to have fixed the readables editor (sort of), but I feel like it's a very band-aid solution to a deeper problem. The particle editor is still broken though. And this is what happens when attempting to edit an existing xdata file:
  21. https://twitter.com/laanlabs/status/1037739442650243072 Looks like it's being public beta'd?
  22. Electrified/heated floor plates would be another fairly easy-to-implement trap type, methinks (I believe The Accountant 1 already managed to do the former). Just a damage brush that toggles on and off, with some particle effects for show? The latter might be more difficult if you're talking about gradually transitioning from a self lit skin to an unlit skin (don't know if that's doable or not).
  23. Yeah, the weight seems a bit too much on that one in hindsight. I also found this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16834154478 but it's over my price point by a not insignificant margin. The Amazon price is not much better either. This one is a bit better, but has a smaller SSD: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GS63VR-Stealth-Pro-230-i7-7700HQ/dp/B01N5JUPWO/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1534812044&sr=1-3&keywords=gaming+laptop&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A2423841011%2Cp_n_feature_eleven_browse-bin%3A13580795011
  24. Swinging blade traps and dropping boulder traps could also be nice (the latter is probably pretty easy to set up, but I haven't tried it myself so I have no idea).
