  1. @demagogue, thanks! It's a bummer that Komag didn't ever make an interior of that tower (completely understandable) but still, what he made is beautiful and stands the test of time which is quite an accomplishment. I was able to dig up Komag's original thread. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/8255-amisfield-tower-a-recreation-in-dark-radiant/ A nice bit of nostalgia there, lots of old members commenting of his work. I just Googled Amisfield Tower. It really is a fine structure and I will endeavor to do justice. Thanks again demagogue!
  2. Not to digress too deep into the weeds but I too have fond memories of Komag. I believe there's still a screenshot of a keep he built a long time ago posted on this website. It's a side-by-side comparison of the real keep and his Darkmod keep. It's some impressive work and inspired me to join these forums. At one point I asked him if he would release it for others to play but he said that it was an incomplete build. I tried convincing him to finish it but sadly I don't think he ever did. Is this still true? I have always wanted to build that keep with the Unreal engine just as a comparison but I don't actually know anything about the real keep. Does anyone know its name, location etc? http://www.thedarkmod.com/wp-content/gallery/general-interest/komag2.jpg Edit: Added screenshot link
  3. Glad to be of help. I know it's not considered a great movie but for some reason I really like it. I hope you're able to find a copy of it. I've noticed that it's on TV around the holidays and I've seen it in the DVD section at my local library.
  4. I believe the movie you're talking about is, The Family Man which stars Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni. It came out in 2000.
  5. Two somewhat recent movies that might possibly spawn some inspiration. The Limehouse Golem takes place in Victorian England in the community of East London (Limehouse). It's a mystery/horror film. A generally okay movie with lots of period architecture, dreariness, and a particularly fine looking library. Trailer: https://youtu.be/P8EJAyk01kk Lady Macbeth takes place in the year 1865 in rural England. Actually a pretty good movie with a nice estate house, lots of creepy scenery/atmosphere, in a very fine countryside setting. Trailer: https://youtu.be/2Z0N8ULhuUA
  6. This saddens me. I've also been a member of this community since 2009, though my membership has almost entirely been as a lurker. I've read and followed these forums carefully and have always been extremely impressed by how members conduct themselves in this community. Members are warmly embraced, supported, and valued and as a result members thrive in this community. This is truly an amazing accomplishment considering how the Internet is plagued with seemingly endless cesspools of acrimony. I've seen dissention here but it has always been handled with wisdom, thought, and respect. This community has so much to be very proud of and I have no doubt that it will continue to prosper. I'm the lead coordinator of another project and to be honest our core team members hate each other. It's sad but it is what it is. I have no idea what happened in your particular situation but I think for us it's because we are so passionate about our project. We all want to make our game great but we all come with our own set of perspectives, ideas, and philosophies, which unfortunately sometimes results in conflict and this can easily erode to the point that it becomes personal. It's disappointing but it seems to be how the wind blows. Bikerdude, I've probably read nearly all of your 18267 posts. This project and community has flourished as a result of your hard work and dedication. Your legacy is inspirational. On the rare occasion that I've posted a question you have always replied with thought, knowledge, and care even when my questions were incoherent. I thank you. I know you said you don't know what you will do beyond this point but perhaps overtime feelings will change and you will come to look at what happened differently. On a couple of occasions I have quit my project but upon reflection I returned. I'm not sure if it's because I'm stubborn or if it's because I'm stupid - maybe a little bit of both. Or possibly because I care. At any rate, I wish you the very best in all things.
  7. Thank you for taking the time to resolve this question. I appreciate it very much. I assumed that this question would have been answered a long time ago so I'm a little surprised to learn that I'm the first to ask this question.
  8. Apparently I'm rather thick in the head because, no I'm still unsure which version uses more resources. I understand that I can make changes in the settings which will help my old computer tackle the game but that's also true with the older version. So with all things being equal, surely one version is more resource intensive versus the other version. Which is it? That's all I'm asking. I only have the older version so I can't compare the two versions.
  9. I completely understand that the old version is severely outdated. I also understand best practices. And I also understand that the old version is no longer supported etc... etc... etc... My question is simple, which version is more resource intensive?
  10. Thanks but upgrading my old system is not an option. I already have lots of the old fms for the old version so that's not a problem. And as for bugs, my old version worked just fine without any problems. What I really want to know is what version, the old Doom mod, or the new stand alone version draws more system resources. That's really the question in its entirety.
  11. I understand what you mean about the importance of selecting the correct settings but certainly one version must require more resources versus the other version.
  12. I have an older backup computer that can't really play games anymore (at least it can't play modern games). I also have an older version of The Dark Mod which was released before it was made into a stand alone game. I also have lots of old FMs that will work on this old version of The Dark Mod. I'm wondering, with my old computer in mind, what version of The Dark Mod would be less demanding on my meager computer? Computer specs: Windows Vista 32-bit Intel Core2 Duo CPU 3.00GHz 4.0GB RAM ATI FirePro 2260
  13. I understand that the purpose of your videos is to show beginners a quick and easy way to make a map. I probably should have mentioned this beforehand but I would like to learn about "best practices" techniques in making maps. Not necessarily just building quick and small maps but with an eye on the future so I can eventually, properly make large and highly detailed maps. Would this "tris" therefore become more exaggerated in larger and more complex maps and ultimately have too much of a negative impact on a large map? Is there a tipping stone point? Is brushwork the "traditional way" of structure building? Because I've come from the Unreal community I'm having a difficult time understanding some of these new terms.
  14. I have a few questions: 1. When you were building your walls you used your pre made modules. Would it not have been better to make the walls to size instead of using a series of modules? I would think there would be a performance drag using so many individual modules (especially in larger maps). 2. I know you wrote in your previous reply that there was no incentive to avoid overlapping your modules. Is that solely because they are "func_static"? 3. Also, you mentioned that if you were using "worldspawn brushes", you would be more careful, is that the reason you are making your structures from "func_static"? Please excuse me if I've used incorrect nomenclature. I'm not familiar with all of your terms. Again, very informative videos.
  15. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm already sold on the idea of mapping. I was just curious to know how long it's taken to get to your level of expertise. I have a similar level of experience in terms of years and background as you but my experience is with the Unreal Engine and Unreal Editors. Question: In your second video, you made a support beam with a 45-degree bracket. I noticed that you didn't deintersect the bracket so that the brush wouldn't overlap onto the other brushes. Is this not an important factor? Does DR have an intersect/deintersect option? Are BSP holes not a concern? Do BSP holes even occur in DR? I haven't yet watched your new video installments but will this evening. I will undoubtedly have more questions. Is it okay that I continue to ask so many detailed questions?
  16. Another fine video. I like that you are so thorough. How many years have you been making maps with Dark Radiant? Did you work with other game editors before working with Dark Radiant? I ask these questions because I want to get a general sense of how long it will take to gain a basic level of proficiency. Sorry for the dumb question about the player start.
  17. This is an outstanding idea. Do you by any chance know how many "parts" you will be making? And, any ideas on how long it will take for you to complete this mission? Question: If you aren't going to make an outside area (other than your backyard area), then where will the player start? I'm looking forward to your next tutorial video/video blog. Keep up the good work Sotha.
  18. I'm not aware of any other country registry like you describe. However, AcademicJobsOnline.org and Interfolio.com have vast employment databases that can search for jobs within a specific country or region. Both of these sites cater towards academic employment, which is probably not what you are looking for at this point in your career, but keep in mind that universities generally offer excellent research opportunities that private companies just don't offer. With that in mind, RWTH Aachen University in Germany has an interesting PhD/Postdoc position. http://www.schoenebeck.oc.rwth-aachen.de I found this position at naturejobs.com - http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/jobs/601873-phd-and-postdoc-positions-in-organic-chemistry As for the private sector - ihirechemist.com has quite a few listings for organometallic chemists from companies which include, IBM and Pfizer.
  19. Greetings and congratulations on obtaining your PhD, I recommend going to ScienceCareers.org - They have a variety of international and domestic chemistry positions including postdoctoral research positions. If you're interested in pursuing a career in academia I would suggest going to HigherEdJobs.com - They also have a variety of international and domestic positions including postdoctoral research positions. Both of these sites are highly respected within the science community. Be aware if you are not already aware, not all job sites are what they seem. A PhD in chemistry and particularly in the area of organometallic chemistry is very desirable. I'm sure you won't have a problem finding a quality job. For what it's worth, I would not necessarily restrict your search to just English speaking countries because most international labs are accustomed to having non-native speakers. Good luck,
  20. Some really good soundtracks here but for me I've always liked the MechWarrior 2 soundtrack. In particular, track 11 "Pyre Light" but I think they are all exceptional... http://youtu.be/gX4G1RJYTi8
  21. While making our mod we encountered the same dilemma. We implemented a ranking system but instead of using an "alphabetical" ranking system we decided on a "profession" ladder system, starting at "apprentice" and going all the way up to "master thief". The system rewards stealth while penalizing the sloppy.
  22. Mr. Tibbs, you have put together a very interesting timeline. Would you be willing to repost this information over on the Rune-World forums? http://rune-world.com/forum There's been a lot of speculation that Human Head is currently developing Rune 2. https://www.facebook.com/RuneGame I think people in the Rune community would be very interested in reading what you have collected.
  23. It's good to see that some of you have found Thievery. I still occasionally play but have found through trial and error that it's best to play with likeminded people... They were in the process of updating Thievery with Night-Blade (based on the UT2004 engine and then later on the UT3 engine) but it was canceled. Before it was canceled I thought about joining their team but by the time I got around to it the project was gone which is a pity because Night-Blade was unique and would have added a very different dimension to the "Cloak & Dagger" genre. I think there's something very cool about playing with and against human beings, AI is good but for me organic opponents makes it a much more dynamic and rewarding experience. I'm in the middle of making a "Cloak & Dagger" mod and have often lamented that we should have added multiplayer options from its conception, c'est la vie...
  24. I'd recommend Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Although it's not technically a pure stealth game, the game-play is flexible so you can shape your game experience into a stealth, thief-like experience plus, it's a pretty good all around game.

    LCD Monitors

@ jdude: Thanks for the info, the Samsung 226BW looks like a very fine monitor but when I looked for it they said it was out of stock and that is might not be restocked. @ bikerdude: I agree, the LG IPS226V-PN monitor looks like the best choice for me. Also, newegg has free shipping which is another plus. Thanks for all your help, I can't wait to get back to mapping.
