  1. I must say, having to kill someone (required by a story) as oppose to sneak past them was a refreshing change :)

Just out of curiosity, if player would use gas arrow on the boss of the usurpers, would that still count as kill?

Also, dev team, would it be possible to implement option to remap key binding for console in the next patch/update?

I always have to press ctrl+alt+ tilde, whereas I would like to press just tilde for quicker access.

If it is possible to remap it even now by modifying some file, please, do show me how or point me to link dealing with this topic.

  2. Gelo,

    Wau.

    Where to even start?

    This.Mission.Is.Brilliant!

Can´t thank you guys enough for this.

It took me some time to finish this mission, because of real life issues, though i started playing it the second day it was released!

    What should I praise first?

Well told story? Graphical feast? Optimization?

I´m not even gonna start with "this mission looks fantastic" it looks fantastic.

New gameplay mechanic (spiritual/material world), complete with different items and health bars is brilliant, simple (though I am not so sure if it was simple to implement it technically) and effective.

What I immediately noticed was secret location counter - every time you found one, small message displayed, showing how much of items have you discovered.

This might seem like a simple thing, but I wish all the subsequent games would have this feature - personally it does not break the immersion for me and informs me ingame how much secrets I still have left - by no means i have discovered all of them, some of them were cleverly hidden and even though I consider myself a thorough person while playing, I was able to find out only 4 of 6 and 7 of 15.

For the location of the rest of them, I was watching FenPhoenix´s video :)

Also, I must say I was chuffed to find out you named one of the characters after me! After me! :D

That never happened to me before and I felt honored.

I have a feeling this mission raised a bar here :)

Again, thanks all you guys who participated on this, this is a wonderful treat of a mission.

  3. I don´t remember exactly, but I either found out about it through TTLG/Eidos forums or just googled it somewhere.

I remember though I heard about it waay back, like in 2007, and saw the preview mission on Youtube (Blackheart Manor - it was never released, to my knowledge - if it was, please, send me a link, because I wanna play it soo badly!).

Since then I was "following" the project (loaded up the forum/page once per month or so) and when it was finally released back in 2009 I was playing the heck out of the first missions!

I still remember how laggy was Tears of St. Lucia 1.0 :)

Since then I played every single mission available (based on Dark WIki) and I am checking page/forum regularly (once in two/three days).

  4. @Tarhiel, look again for the hiding spot.

IRC there's a chest by the stairs that is the spot you're looking for and there are also some hidden compartments in the walls of the ship back behind the storage stuff in a couple places.

Hm, I wasn´t able to find said chest, but after your advice about

    secret compartments

I noclipped in storage area and was able to find one in the more upper storage deck. Thanks to that I had enough money to thick the money objective off (honestly, spices and herbs are pretty confusing objective title, one might thing you MUST find some kind of spices, so I was looking for some kind of pouch or small crates, whereas mapper simply had in mind good ol´ loot - just wanted to give it a new spin by naming it differently) and set things further in motion.

I was a bit disappointed that you cannot go back into the ship once it shipwrecked, but from there it was pretty straightforward and I didn´t lost my way.

I thought I will encounter sooner or later that skeleton which (presumably) killed the crew, but... I guess it should represent the skeleton form captain´s closet (writer of that book)?

It confused me it came from the deck, I thought it is "some other", but now that I think about it, it seems it was the one and only.

One minor thing: it might help others to insert one more message into cursed tome - some players might be confused by "follow the mist", where suddenly if you are in the house (of course, you will go inside, what kind of Thief player would you be?), it get changed to "hide quickly, dangerous men are coming" - but after you deal with them, it never gets changed back to "okay, now go to the mists".

I suppose the "quick, hide" objective was element of surprise the book didn´t predicted, and I took it as such, but I still think it should get changed back to "follow the mists" after you either:

    - knock out the men

    - kill them

    - simply leave the house

Overall, unique, short and interesting mission. Definitely congratulations on your first release!

  5. Hello everybody,

So I am enjoying this unique mission, I was able to take the book and treasure, but I still wasn´t able to tick optional objective about finding a good hiding spot for my good later.

I already scouted through the whole ship and didn´t dind any.

    What am I missing?

PS: Oh, and where can one find medicinal spices? I thought maybe in cook´s place, but I couldn´t find any.

  6. Congratulations on the release. This is one of those missions which starts out pretty simple, then the objectives slowly just keep adding, not knowing when it might end :)

I liked that. Also liked the mildly challenging clue with safe combination ;) + note in journal of one culprit (is there actually one page missing? Because I haven´t found it anywhere) - jab on the cliché when everybody is writing their transgressions down, hoping no one would read them.

Also, this is the first mission with cameras, if I am not mistaken?

  7. Nicely different mission. As others have already said, the sex scene was complete surprise for me - this is the first Darkmod FM where I encountered it - I remember other mission´s briefing, where Garret´s unmentionables were referred to as "blackjack" but there was nothing specific in the game itself.

I actually thought that maiden NPC got stuck in that narrow room with furnaces and it´s being continuously burned! Then a man´s voice joined in and i thought: "Cool, two NPCs are being taken care of, less possibility of being spotted."

And then I ´ve opened the door to that incriminating room - and suddenly everything was explained :D

  8. @Eqagunn - glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the write-up!

@EbonKnight -. I've definitely been part of the modding and game dev scene, but almost exclusively as a writer (probably the project most people would know about is The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex). Outside of a test map I put together in UDK as part of an abandoned indie game, this is indeed my first map. Maybe hanging around other mappers rubbed off . Anyways, thank you for your kind words, and I'm really glad you enjoyed the mission!

You wrote script for The Nameless Mod? :OOO Now I am officially in perpetual state of awe :o That´s definitely one of the best DE mods out there, I haven´t played the new Nexus or 2027, so far though, Nameless is my personal best far and wide.

  9. Hello Moonbo,

This mission ranks among the best here, namely Heart of the Lone Salvation and Glenham Tower. Certainly ranks among my personal best.

Beautiful mission in story (!), the way how it is slowly unfolding before the eyes of the player, in atmosphere – clearly one can see you are a writer; readables have this novelic, story-ish quality to them, which helps tremendously to tell a story.

But to see a writer who is good at programming as well? Now that´s something: – level design and technical quality of the mission are both high (I have a low-end computer and 1.0 version of this mission is running just fine).

    Where to begin?

First thing I noticed, there was no loot objective, which is a welcomed change – I usually try to do the loot objective as first, which makes me look in every nook and cranny of the maps for gold, so I can concentrate on the story later. This time around, I could concentrate on the story right away. I did not tried to steal everything.

I liked the even distribution of verticality and horizontality, in fact; I think there was a bit of everything in this mission (street level, dungeon, loot in unexpected places...).

Not to mention lot of unseen textures&sounds!

That song in the church was beautiful! Sound familiar right away, I have heard different version from Jan Garbarek&Hilliard Ensebmle. I couldn´t bring myself to steal anything in that church - I saw there are coins in the baptismal font and bracelet on the hand of the statue on the other side - awe and humbleness struck me and I just took the key and went on - after the music stopped :). Music in general was just...spot on.

loved the idea with fallen hammerites and how you had to steal their crowns – instead of trying to stay in the shadows and avoid contact with them, you were encouraged to approach them unseen as fast as possible and quickly take off their crowns (if they saw you it was impossible to take it off, if I am correct, or there was some technical difficulties with frobbing these NPC´s while in attack mode) - original change in mechanics.

I also liked the kudos towards modding community on sepulchres

And when I saw “Brother Brosius: Who silent the Evil” my soul was squeaking with joy and I was laughing out loud: D

And yes, as Melan already noted, this mission has a Lady Rowena feeling to it – by the way, one of my all time favourites is her Seven Sisters – I was practically drooling the whole mission.

Out of curiosity: what will happen, when we will take the golden skull from greengrocer before finishing the main quest? Except that he will walk away. I thought I will find him with his wife in their bed, but he wasn´t there.

It´s missions like this one which makes me want to make one of my own.

  10. Hello Kvorning,

I must join the praising masses, because this praise is truly deserved :)

Hat´s off to anybody who´d build mission of this size and beauty as his first one! :o

I am one of the few lucky ones, who still has ghost intact, I´ve already finished the main objectives, but there are three thing I need help with:

1.) How do you go into sewers? Where´s the entrance? They seem inaccessible (not frobbable) from outside

2.)How do you find out the identity of the killer? I´ve only found that room with "ghost" sound and remains of the body right after the bard´s room (the one who´s the beloved one of a woman, which refused the wealthier patron)

3.) Where´s the room I should go to, to finish the mission?

Please, no cryptic hints, just plain answers :) Thank you.

  11. Wow, I like the fact there are so many ways how to enter he hotel + you can actually finish objectives of other characters as well, even though they won´t count for your gameplay

for example, I´ve played like an assassin and I could collect money bags, which is surely objective for thief

Going through this mission at least once with whatever character you choose will definitely help you in later playthroughs - you would know locations of certain keys and objects.

So far, this is the most unusual gameplay I´ve seen (different characters + sandbox-like approach to level design), although my favourite would be Demis of the Lich Queen, just because I like story-based missions (aaand Glenham Tower is one of my all-time favourites) :)

  12. Melan, your missions are joy to play, as always .)

Visually beautiful, no lags on my old laptop.

Story-wise it was nothing heavy - it wasn´t that much story itself that got you hooked, rather the way story was told - just a few scarce readables in the whole mission + the environment itself told the story, so you had to pierce it together.

Lack of lock-picks and rope arrows right from the beginning got me thinking: will I find some later? As it turned out, there were no lock-picks in this game, just keys but you will later find rope arrows (I didnt´t even knew those were rope ones, I thought those are just plain broadhead, until I accidentally pressed my rope-arrow hotkey) and from that moment on, I knew there are places where you can use them.

I found one special; after you came out from catacombs, you´ll end up on street. There is a lonely beam above shack you came from, and if you will rope arrow there, you can go where no mapper has gone before (on the edge of the map) - I liked the fact player can move freely, that you didn´t gave there some invisible wall. Or you just didn´t anticipated that :)

After I thought mission is done I realized I cannot go back the same way I came, so I had to find other way out. Luckily, it wasn´t that hard and this is one of the few missions, where I didn´t need spoilers from forums, I was able to find way by myself - rare feeling :)

And when I was on surface, I remembered about those rope arrows and started using them :) I liked that there were places right at the start of the mission, where you couldn´t previously go, and now you could :)

    Well done short, enjoyable mission.

  13. Very nice mission, Sotha, and satisfying conclusion to Thomas Porter saga :)

It was one of the missions where it was always clear where I should go or what I should be doing (last keyhunt and – try-to-remember-what-has-been-done-and-what-has-not was iin William Steele 1: In the North, which was brilliant, but in different way :) ).

I liked the story, beautiful sunset, ominous shadows in Weeping Halls – had to restart because of them several times and after that I was carefully listening to their footsteps. Only during return, after I paid visit to the laboratory, I have noticed you can see their shadows (shadows having shadows) in light, but it was more or less not necessary anymore.

I was saving water arrows for the duration of a whole mission, thinking you might need them at the end on the Queen herself. Well, I could´ve use them. But I´ve disposed of her in messy style – fire arrow!

Then I was surprised her minions are still alive after she died. But I guess the rest of the mission would be too easy then :)

After I lurked out, I have enjoyed Thomas´s farewell to LQ and set out to setting sun.

  14. Hello guys and gals,

Congratulations on the release (I suppose Crucible of Omens are right behind the door...soo many sleepless night :P)!

Game seems to be running much more smoother. but I have a problem: even when I change my aspect ratio and resolution to 1440x900 (native to my monitor), I have a black stripes on the sides and they just don´t want to disappear. Also, text in the menu seems a bit blurry opposite to the previous one (but that may be cause by the resolution& black stripes). Do you know what´s going on?

    I have a Win7 64x, 4 GB ram, GeForce 9600m GT

    Thanks for any advice.

  15. Hello RPGista,

I´ve just finished your mission and I´m impressed.

The verticality (there were so many places riped for ropearrowing and I had none :) ), variability of the areas and level design in general is very good.

    - Intro. Intro!!! I´ve found myself grasped from the first frame to the last. It definitely deserves an outro done in the same way. to conclude the story. Because this way the overarching story of two lovers would fade away into background, pushed out by the scary part (which WAS scary a lot) and that would be pity ;) I also liked that somebody did mission with a love as a topic. I know, somebody might say that first mission in the Thief II was rescuing Basso´s girlfriend; but the whole love topic was frowned upon by Garret and his cynical remarks. I just like the simple fact, that somebody did a mission, where thief steals unselfishly. Much needed change.

And I know it was mentioned somewhere, but could you tell me what music did you used for the intro? It was beautiful and my Winamp definitely wants to play it :). Can I extract it form some game file? If so, which one?

    Now the buggy parts:

    - too long readable (I think you know which one I mean, you´ll encounter it completely at the end. The same message could be conveyed through much shorter readable. And I must say I was a bit angry, since I read the whole thing (okay, except last 5-7 pages), thinking there might be something essential to the storyline)

    - being lost, clueless (like Sotha) after darkening in the crypt (definitely a hint in the objectives after darkening would help): I thought that zombie is actually that lover you should take ring from. In order to do that, you´d need to kill it. I had no holy water, no water arrows, so I thought there is some special way of defeating it. I discovered none. Then I tried to lure it out near the priest. To my great surprise, priest started to hunt me down and paid no attention to zombie walking around him, trying to kill me too. After that I gave up and run to the forums.

From a technical standpoint, I have a low-end machine and your mission run fine most of the time and I haven´t experienced a single bug.

I am bit surprised, as many people here, that you don´t wan´t to do any more FMs. C´mon, your first attempt definitely shows you have a talent! Don´t let it rot! And as Sotha said, eventually you´ll become better and you wouldn´t have to make such an effort (and it wouldn´t take so much time) to create a FM.

Again, very nice mission and more than average first attempt.

  16. Hello Bikerdude,

Very nice mission. I, as Diego for that matter, had a problem with entering the tavern - it freezes, and my symptoms are exactly the same as Diego's. So I´m also waiting for version 2 of this fan mission. Otherwise, I was immediately immersed by atmosphere and story (have you been inspired by "Haunted catedral" story by any chance?), although as Melan said, streets were a tad empty and there was nothing to do/loot/read in majority of rope arrow accessible areas (I thought it was an intentional new approach to leveldesign - breaking the traditions :) ).

This is not a reproach, seeing that the fan missions had to be done pretty quickly.

All in all - I´m waiting for version 2 impatiently :)
