  1. I think I just heard a tiny sample of TDM music during an Al Jazeera doc on North Korea just now.

It's the part where they blow up the Inter-Korean Liaison Office

That has got to be from a royalty free archive, it would make more sense for the TDM music to have used such sounds rather than someone who's a TDM fan at Al Jazeera taking audio from a track.

On the other hand if you think it'll help the mod, you can always link it on the front page for publicity! :)

Ok, but that benefit is not any more since 2.11

Sure, but by that point I got used to shadow maps and it seems clear from development notes that shadow maps are the future of the engine and will get the most focus. Plus occasionally I've seen some mappers suggest not using stencil shadows because they glitch out in their missions.

It took me ages to move from stencil shadows to shadow maps. I finally moved for multiple reasons, though it helped I finally upgraded my hardware such that any frame loss from shadow maps was no longer noticeable. I think what actually made me pull the trigger was with some missions actually recommending it for side-benefits like volumetric lighting (e.g. Noble Affairs). But to be honest, I treat stencil shadows as a legacy from Doom 3 and it's a (now very rare) form of shadowing that's quite distinctive, so maybe I didn't want to move because of that. :)

It's a form of profanity in the Thief universe isn't it? Or it is in the older games anyway, Thief 4 decided to use modern profanity instead even though they had an in-universe alternative. Taffers.

  5. No need to get yourself infected with malwarefor that good old Windows experience of ads and nag screens.

@SeriousToni Regarding the screen that appears after updates, the guaranteed fix is as follows:

      • Open Windows Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions
      • Uncheck these items:
        • Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and occasionally when I sign in to highlight what's new and suggested
        • Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows

As for the issue kano mentioned, I have a directory on separate drive that I keep all my installers is whenever it's time to install/reinstall Windows. Saves having to hunt down the individual installers and also avoids dealing with this sort of crap. I'm sure someone will mention Linux but I've evaluated it for many years and it's still not suitable for my purposes... yet.

  6. Happy new year!

I thought that I wouldn't like "House of the dragon" because I didn't like the ending of the predecessors.

I am now pleasantly surprised; until episode 7 the focus is on dialogues, I like it very much...besides, I am now allergic to all the violence orgies. I can't take it anymore.

All this senseless violence in Westworld, Game of Thrones, Colony, Walking Dead...or maybe there is something wrong with me anymore.

      Xolvix

Game of Thrones fell off the rails because the two guys behind the show were excellent at adapting stories already written for them by George R.R. Martin. They weren't so good once they ran out of book material and had to come up with new stories though.

Interestingly the violence never put me off when watching Game of Thrones, but I can certainly understand when someone gets fed up with excessive violence being used in a lot of media and they just want something a bit less brutal. I feel the same way occasionally, it can get exhausting.

@chakkman JackFarmer said he didn't like the ending of the predecessors, which I interpreted to mean he didn't like how Game of Thrones ended, a view I strongly agree with. In my case that doesn't mean I don't like Game of Thones, hell I was a big fan at the time... at least until the final season. The way the series ended just destroyed any sense of rewatchability given all the fan theories and drip-fed mysteries basically accounted to nothing and so much character development was ultimately wasted. That was my fear with House of the Dragon but it sounds like it's decent enough to give it a shot.

No there's nothing wrong with you, there are limits to how much violence a person can stomach in the name of entertainment, especially if it's being presented in a very visceral way. As for the show I've been avoiding it due to I guess the same reaction about how GoT turned out, but I've heard good things so maybe HBO wanted to take it seriously and not ruin the prequel. Then again, there are more seasons to go so hopefully they don't lose their way.

Only if it's easy to respond. If it's something too niche or specific then I don't normally bother, but if it's a simple question (and I notice it) then sure.

Yeah add me to the list of folks who adore Prey. I didn't quite click with Mooncrash though, think I have an abandoned playthrough still. Which is disappointing since it's clearly a whole new region with new enemies, lore and areas to explore. You could actually adapt it to a mini-expansion like the DLCs from Dishonored for example, but they wanted to add a twist to the gameplay and it doesn't quite work for me.

This is really an obscure phenomenon in gaming communities. You only have lovers and haters anymore.

To be fair it's not just gaming communities these days. Seems like when you're on the Internet you're expected to take a side - no moderates allowed. I find it's better when discussing things in person since it's easier to clarify things when questioned, but when you post something online it's just too hard to have a complex, measured opinion. People can't properly process it, or worse they'll make incorrect assumptions on the stuff you don't say, then you have to clarify things later when you're on the receiving end of criticism. It's exhausting.

Unless you cover ever single edge case in your post (and make it a huge wall of text that risks people not reading it), you can't have a moderate opinion about anything, so it's frankly easier for people to just take a side. Some communities are better when people are aware of this and try to be more understanding.

Can you elaborate? I haven't played it yet since I heard it's less of an immersive sim compared to their previous titles and more a straight FPS with some additional complexity due to the looping mechanic.

  17. I'm beginning to understand why people who aren't into social clubbing "don't last long" on this project, and why it's so full of holes. When moderators are siding with bullies, by closing down threads that they derail, then I start to wonder if I should support the platform to begin with.

I'm sure that the core development is solid, but when you're constantly tone policed and bullied, and moderators are playing into it too, then the project will just drive away talent, and replace it with socialites instead. ...and without talent, you only end up with a small skeleton crew trying to do everything themselves.

...so Dragofer and Airship Ballet, and all you other socialites, you win. From now on I'll just keep to myself. You'll never be able to do my work, but at least you'll be happy together, and that's what matters to you.

    Update

Actually, I have to revise my statement:
I actually messaged greebo - the top dog, I gather - about nbohr1more's outburst of insanity below, and since I haven't even heard back from him, I just have to assume that there's not a single core programmer here, who's not backing nbohr's threats. ...and that's bad.

...so if you're a newbie reading this, or an honest soul like ZergRush, then just slowly back out of these forums, run, and don't look back. This is nothing more than a cult posing as a game development project, using Thief and IDTech4 to sucker hopefuls in, to do work for them, while trying to cajole them into something going on behind the scenes, which apparently - according to nbohr - is something that should be hidden from the state. These people aren't programmers - they don't even understand things like how to fix the simplest bugs. All they have, is an engine, and an IP, and some sort of fascist social cult. There was some other project I saw being made in the Unreal Engine. Try joining that project. ...or start a project of your own. Anything but this asylum.

Hopefully that was "divisive" enough for a final post, because at this point I really want people to leave this place. This project is, on a management level, just awful garbage, run by garbage people, apparently from the top down, and I'm just glad that they have a garbage place to stay, together, and hopefully forever.

  18. Please, can we finally group the missions by year in the game menu?

    1. Xolvix

      Xolvix

You'd need to have that metadata present somewhere in the downloaded files or the mission database backend. Right now I don't think enough of that info is there, except maybe by guessing the date due to the age of the files in each missions's .pk4.

Odds are if you want such info, best to use outside sources until/unless the in-game mission downloade is extended to somehow access the info in these links:

  19. I still play classic Doom (albeit with user-made mods and maps rather than the original campaign) on a regular basis. A game from the early 90's which has still got a healthy following in 2022. Pretty amazing.

    1. Xolvix

      Xolvix

I like both equally well, especially since Quake also has a strong following and plenty of maps/mods. Doom focuses more on masses of enemies (easy to do since they're all sprites), Quake focuses more on intricate levels and navigation, since you can jump now and maps tend to take advantage of the improved movement. Quake's palette is a bit less colorful than Doom but it lends itself to a certain style of map a lot better, grittier and more morbid.

  22. You know how there are these long videos which turn your TV into a fireplace on christmas?

Well, can we make a video with just videos of happy, friendly farm animals? ...for dogs? I notice that they get really happy when there are animals on TV, and how bored they are just lying around the house most of the day. When we leave them alone, we could just turn on the TV and have them be happy all day instead. It'll be like ASMR, but for pets.

  23. Finished Deathloop yesterday. My verdict:

Arkane Studios showing off once again that they are one of the best in game design: Pick the timeloop mystery adventure mechanics of Outer Wilds and remix them, add "Dark Souls"-like invasions in the form that other players can play your antagonist Juliana, and wrap it all in 60s-stylized first person shooter with abilities and upgrades, and an interesting story to unravel. This culminates in such a unique gameplay experience that "Deathloop" would have deserved Game of the Year 2021 WAY more than "It Takes Two". Especially the invasions add so much tension to your playthroughs, it is absolutely exhilarating. That is, unless your opponent lags incredibly, which sadly happens quite often. Combine this with the performance issues many players experienced, and you know why the game did not win game of the year. It is really sad to see technical issues hinder such a masterpiece of a game from doing well. The only criticism I have with respect to gameplay is that the first shot of any weapon is apparently always 100% accurate, which enables you to headshot enemies hundreds of meters away using your submachine gun, but other than that the gun play is on point. All in all, just 9/10 due to technical issues.

    1. Xolvix

      Xolvix

Arkane are all over the place when it comes to the engines they use for their games. Dishonored, Prey and Dishonored 2 all use completely different engines which seems like a unnecessary challenge for their programmers/designers, but whatever. As for Deathloop, I haven't played it yet since I became less interested in it after hearing that it's not actually an immersive sim, and that's what I like most from them. Apparently it's more of a shooter with a unique puzzle element which sounds cool as is probably the reason why I'll eventually play it, but once I found out how it's not really a sim my enthusiasm dropped.
